i rescued my yorkie from a shelter and when we go to walk and people stare at me he starts to growl and bark?

i rescued my yorkie from a shelter and when we go to walk and people stare at me he starts to growl and bark and he gets on his hind legs n growls it actually scares me u cant be fooled by his size is this normal behavior because he was abused???

Dogs communicate through body language and barking. Your dog will bark for various reasons, if he wants to go outside, if he thinks you’re playing with him and, unfortunately, if he is wary of strangers. A dog that barks at strangers does so out of fear, and a fearful dog is more likely to bite. When your dog barks at strangers, it’s imperative that you take steps immediately to correct the situation.

Has anyone else noticed the large amount of pure-bred Yorkies in rescue?

In the past month, I have pulled 6 pure-bred Yorkies for the rescue that I work with, since Yorkie Rescue is overloaded.

I have heard that most of the pure-breed rescues are overloaded. I have even found a beautiful GSD at the shelter, but haven't been able to find a rescue that can pull him, and his time is almost up. (I believe they planned to destroy him this weekend, but I got him an extension until Monday.)

Is it just because the economy here in Florida is so bad, or is it everywhere?

The general & purebred rescues in England are straining at the seams with the record number of dogs in their care & have a waiting lists for dogs that need to come into rescue.

While there are genuine cases of financial hardship/health problems the majority fall into;
*realised that small breed dogs like a Yorkie did not come trained. Some people erroneoulsy equate the size of a dog with how much training it will require.
*people who purchased their dog because they were nagged into it.
*on a whim because it was cute.
*thought a dog is a dog, then could not cope with the breeds traits.
*give up the dog rather than economise.

In my breed Dobermann rescue has limited places in its kennels & pays for dogs in the most urgent need to be placed in private kennels. This places a huge burden on their resources & their are still more waiting for a placed.

It is a shame when healthy stable dogs have to be euthanised because supply exceeds demand/financial resouces to keep them in rescue.

I just got a rescue male dog need a new name?

I just got a male rescue Yorkie-poo and we do not like his name. any good male names you can think of ?His name now is dribbles
Thank you all. I'm thinking of Gibbs from (NCIS) Also Rowdy.
Thank you all. I'm thinking of Gibbs from (NCIS) The boss!!

Awww. It is always a good idea to re name a rescue pet. They are getting a new life and need a new name so they do not associate their past life with this new one. Especially if the pet had been abused. Listen to your new baby…He will tell you his new name. Trust your intuition. What a sweetheart you are. Have Fun.

How big was your yorkie puppy at two three months old?

I'm interested in getting a puppy and I know the breeders like to keep them until they are about 10 weeks old. Usually, how big are the at that age?

My male yorkie was 2.8lbs when he was 10 weeks old. I took him from the breeder straight to the vet for a check up so we know the exact weight.

Could a Yorkie puppy and a rabbit play together?

I'm smiling typing this question because it sounds kinda weird! But we have a Yorkie puppy and I was just wondering if we got a rabbit would she play with the rabbit or maul it to death?!

I'd say steer clear of the small furry animals with a yorkie.

They were originally bred to be ratters on ships and farms.

I stayed with my aunt and her family for a semester in college. They had a guinea pig. My yorkie used to hide in the corner of the room and watch the guinea pig in it's cage. My yorkie was great with other dogs, small and large, kids, strangers, etc. He just wasn't cool with the small black fuzzy thing in that cage!!

Does anyone know of any cheap Yorkie puppy breeders around Sacramento?

i really want a girl Yorkie puppy but i don't like the idea of shipping. and i cant afford a $1500 puppy. if so please help out. and i would like it to be around Sacramento California! :) thanks

Getting a "cheap" yorkie puppy is not going to be a good idea. The reason the responsible breeders charge the higher prices is because they test their dogs for inheritable diseases such as luxating patellas, heart issues, eye issues, as well as other orthopedic problems. By getting some byb dog you're just going to end up paying even more money in vet bills. Go to a responsible breeder and ask to see the parents, as well as their health clearances. Google Yorkshire Terrier Club.

When should we try and walk our new Yorkie puppy?

We have just got an 8 week old Yorkie puppy who has had his first shots. When can we put a collar on him and try and take him for a walk outside.

Not yet!! He has to finish the full course of vaccinations and then add on a couple of weeks, to be sure he's properly protected. However for sure, he can start to get used to his collar, and then eventually, his lead. Just put the collar on for a little while to start with. And although he will sit and scratch at it, try to take his attention off it by playing with his toys with him. Don't leave it on all the time, for now. And don't crate him with it on just in case he gets caught up. Puppies do horrible things! Once he's reasonably happy with it, attach his lead and, provided you are there to watch, let him wander around with it on. Don't pick it up at this point. Again after a few days doing this, pick it up, but don't pull, just encourage him to go with you by talking to him, using food bribes, etc. If you do this gradually, by the time he is ready to go off your property, he should at least be familiar with the collar and lead thing. He can, of course, go in your garden, assuming it's fenced in, now.

Good luck

How can we stop our cat attacking our new Yorkie puppy?

We have just got a new Yorkie puppy one month ago. Our 3 year old female cat seemed to be adjusting to him but the other day she suddenly attacked him and if I hadn't been on hand, he would have been seriously injured. As it was he sustained a nasty gash which just missed his eye. How can we stop this happening again.

I'd keep a squirt bottle or a water gun with a good powerful stream nearby…..see if THAT works to deter the cat when she wants to pick on the puppy. I'm not really a cat person….but know folks who used this idea to train their cats to stay off kitchen counters & tables.

Might want to ask this in the Cat forum, just to see if anybody knows a better way to train a cat :)

Enough wet fur in return for pestering the pup & chances are, she'll leave well enough alone.

That, or you could figure out a way to keep the cat seperated from the pup, until the pup gets a little bigger & learns how to assert himself more.
