Free Puppies…?

I live in California and am interested in a small breed puppy (yorkie, chihuahua ect…) does anybody have one or know of someone giving any away? I live in the Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay Area.

Thanks-
I check our local pound/shelter/SPCA daily….. I am more looking for someone whose dog had puppies and they can't afford to keep them kinda puppy. If I need to pay I can't pay that much. Most of the ones around here are going from$300-500 and I don't have that much to spend.

most shelters adopt out dogs for around $100. if you can't afford that, then you absolutely cannot afford to own a dog. you need to be able to afford food, vet bills etc. it is not fair to get an animal if you would not be able to pay it's vet bills in the case of an emergency (the emergency vet where i live charges $125 just to walk in the door). if money is not the issue, check out petfinder.com to find the little dog you are looking for in your area! it won't be free, but since most shelters microchip and spay/neuter before adoption, if might as well be free!

Just a warning - free and cheap dogs are either cruelly raised, or usually have something wrong with them. You might be able to find a good one, but they are rare. Occasionally their is someone who REALLY wants to keep their dog, and giving them away is the only way, but you need to be VERY careful. When getting dogs from shelters, have them screened for genetic defects, and know what will happen later in life.

There is no such thing as a free puppy. Check it's background before you get it. The more you pay now, just might mean less you'll have to pay out for genetic problems in the future.

Please try your local shelter. There are hundreds of purebreeds there. The adoption fees are minimal and most of the animals are fully vetted and microchipped.

This is to the first response, that said that there must be something wrong with the dog if someones giving them away. The best dog that I've ever owned were the ones that I got for free. There was nothing "wrong" with them. To actually get the breed that you want, you'll have to look hard and check all local shelters.

SPCA you could also order one from the SPCA but it might cost money for shipping

Shelter dogs frequently turn out to be a great bargain, because they usually come fully vetted/vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and often micro-chipped as well. All for less than $100.

If you get a "free" puppy from just some random dude who doesn't want it, chances are good you'll have to pay for all that stuff on your own. So the shelter dog would actually save you a couple hundred dollars over the first year you have the dog.
