my 11month yorkshire terrier has had her first haircut three days ago.?
they shaved her very short & she now shivers alot. is she cold or has she had a bad experience. im worried about her….
Hello Fellow Yorkie Owner
Well I would have to say it is a little of both and if they shaved her rite down they chose a bad time of year to do it the poor baby better have some sweater's she is going to catch a chill here in a month or so
I would question your Groomer and consider a new more experienced one as to shave her rite down In September??? I really Hope you live In a warm state Poor baby
I would have to say she is a bit stressed as being the first time away from Mom and Dad having a stranger doing strange things to her and all those funny noises and wondering when Mommy is going to come back and get her that is allot for a young one to take in all @ once
As for her being cold Yes she has to be and a complete shave down is for the summer unless she is so terribly matted she is unbrushable
So just give her allot of extra Love and reinforce the fact you love her and keep her warm Mommy
maybe you and she can go out on a little shopping trip and buy her a nice new sweater and let her know that when you go away together it is not always going to be a bad experience like she just had
Good luck with that baby and becarefull they can be addictive

she might be cold. i doubt she had a bad experience, groomers are pretty good with our animals. maybe consider getting your pup a coat or something.. it will take her a while to get used to having short hair

they are both, try to keep her warm a few days then when she experience the second haircut, she'll get use to it

those clippers can be scary to a puppy. she'll get better with time. plus smaller dogs have a tendency to shake a lot for no particular reason. i wouldn't worry.

you could get your yorkie a sweater from petlondon.net or if that is to expensive get an old jumper cut off the sleeve and put 2 holes for the feet .you really would be better off going to a professional dog groomer to get the proper yorkie cut /style if that is to expensive maybe buy a dog grooming video or dvd .have just read again your post you say they shaved her i would of refused to pay but maybe find another groomer there are some very good one out there.i keep my own yorkies coat long it involves a lot of brushing and care i have 4 yorkies.but in the early days had the short coat it also looked good.

She could be cold. I doubt it was so much a bad experience as the fact you waited until she was almost a year old to give her a haircut- dogs should start getting groomed regularly at 8-10 weeks to properly adjust them to the situation. I'm sure it was fairly traumatizing for her to go through it at 11 months with no warning. You need to make sure she goes in every 6 weeks even if she doesn't need a full haircut, they can bathe her and trim her up, but she needs the experience of being there regularly to get used to it. It'll be harder now that she's an adult, but it has to be done. Next time don't wait so long! And in the meantime, buy her a sweater.
You also didn't mention if she was matted or not- did they shave her because you failed to brush her properly? If so, it was even more traumatic for her- being matted in the first place is horribly painful, and having to get shaved when a dog is matted is a long, painful process. Make sure you brush your dog every single day!!! Even when she's shaved, just get a soft brush and do it anyway so you're in the habit and she gets used to it.

She is cold and also it is very traumatic on her to be groomed. All the other dogs barking. Standing on a table being tied by the neck to stay still. They all these scary metal objects taking off my hair then a hot dryer to dry me off . Scary. She will be fine. Always check carefully a dogs groomers. There are good and bad ones. Ask around. Pay alittle extra if you must. But always check on them. There has been alot of not too reputable groomers that have scared dogs. So pop in to see how the dog is doing sometimes. Or stay while the dog is groomed. If all is well do not worry my poodle shook all the time with groomers. He hated it.

people- stop blaming the groomer and stop saying the owner should lookinto getting a more professional groomer. someone actually said it is wrong to shave during this time of year?
your dog was matted. i dont care if you mentioned it or not, but a yorkie who hasnt been groomed in 11 months? it was matted and i dont need to see the dog to know that. this was his first grooming appt and he was matted. some people…… your dog was probably horrible for grooming. puppies are usually really bad the first time, and your dog being 11 months and never knowing this, i cant even imagine what both the groomer and the dog were going through (you are most def. not their favorite customer). the worst/most abrasive thing you can do to a dog in terms of grooming is shave a dog that is matted, especially one that hasnt ever been groomed before.
did your dog have a bad experiance? probably, but it is b/c you neglected to properly take care of her. your dog could have gone to the #1groomer in the world and still would have copme back the same.
yorkies need to be groomed every 6 weeks, minimum (i have had many who come in every week). they also need to be brushed every day by their owner. it worries me when people get dogs and obviously do no research on that dog

Its possible she's a bit cold, you should definately look into getting her a sweater. She could also still be reacting to the fact that she had hair and now she doesn't. It feels different to be bald, and I've seen dogs react in different ways because of the different feeling. But she should be over it by now.
And its very very doubtful that she's shaking because of a bad experience. Yes, of course she was scared while she was there. It was her first time being groomed and she wasn't properly socialized to it. Dogs with her coat NEED to be groomed often and starting off as early as possible. Its also very likely she was matted. Very tight matts can be uncomfortable to remove, even with the clippers. But, unless you've been nurturing her nerves every second since you brought her home then she's not shaking because of having been groomed. She doesn't even REMEMBER having been groomed, let along what it was like. Dogs are in the moment creatures, they don't fret over something that happen 3 minutes ago, let along three days. But, if you've been petting her a babying her every time she shivers then you're promoting that behaviour, and now she doesn't even know why.
Buy her a sweater and leave her alone, she'll get over it.
Also, as a groomer, I ask you, please please please don't be the type of owner that is constantly stopping in and checking on your dog. If you don't trust the groomer you've chosen then don't leave your dog there. Every time your dog sees you while she's being groomed it will make it harder for her and harder for the groomer. If you absolutely MUST check in, then don't let your dog see you! And I'm not saying there aren't bad groomers out there, but that is YOUR responsibility to find one that you trust.
