Is There Such a Thing as a Teacup Yorkie?

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Is there such a thing as a teacup yorkie?

No. Many yorkie breeder’s claim to have “teacup” Yorkie’s and justify charging more for such claims on their puppies. The Yorkie standard gives no preference for smaller dogs within the 7 pound weight limit. Extra care should be given to the more tiny Yorkies as some are more susceptible to hypoglycemia, physical injuries due to falls, etc. The Yorkshire Terrier standard as defined by the American Kennel Club (AKC) is between 4 to 7 pounds.

* The desired size of the Yorkie is a personal choice. Families with small children might try to find a larger Yorkie, where as other’s might be in search for the so called “purse baby”. Smaller Yorkies may be more susceptible to disease and injuries due to their size. Also, many vets will charge more for working on smaller Yorkies because it is more difficult (and dangerous) because of the smaller size.

* There is no such breed! The Yorkshire Terrier breed standard classifies Yorkies as up to 7 pounds. They may weigh from 4 to 7 pounds. If a breeder or pet store is selling a "teacup" or "mini", run away! They may be shady and misrepresenting the Yorkie. The tiny ones may be sold too early, perhaps just so they can call them "teacups" or a "mini". If you are set on a smaller Yorkie, ask your breeder when their next litter will be. There will be some "smaller" Yorkies in the litter from which to choose from. Most consider a respected breeder to be one that is AKC registered. While that does not always determine that they are to be trusted 100%, there are standards and qualifications that AKC registered breeders must pass.

* There are small, full-grown Yorkies that may only weigh 2 pounds. But, it is very rare for Yorkies to be that small. If you have a Yorkie that is on the small side of the scale, you must be very careful with them, as they are definitely more "fragile" than standard sized ones and you must take extra precautions with them, such as making sure they don't fall from a high place or that they don't jump off of places.

Where Can I Get a Yorkie Teacup?

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

I live in the WDC area I would like to know where is it possible to purchase a yorkie teacup (small dog) at price ranging between $500-700 or even cheaper online or in person although I dont have a car.

There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie. Teacup is a marketing term used by unethical breeders to describe dogs bred to be extremely small, generally with no regard to the overall health of the dogs. These are the types of breeders you should avoid at all costs.

I would suggest that before you actively start trying to find a dog, you take the time to educate yourself on the breed FIRST. It will help you recognize common red flags associated with Yorkie breeders so that you know which ones to pass up. It will also enable you to better determine if a dog you are considering is a quality representation of the breed. Learn about the breed specific issues that affect Yorkies so that you know which health screenings to ask breeders about.

Attend some local conformation or agility events. Introduce yourself to some breeders/owners. Go to handling classes in your area. The search for a good, reputable, ethical breeder doesn't happen overnight.

Good luck!

I Want a Teacup Yorkie, but the Problem Is My Parents. Can U Help?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

My parents trust me and think I am responsible to have a dog except, my dad doesn't want one climbing and ruining furniture and peeing on it, while my mom has allergies and she thinks a dog is a bad idea!!!
Please help me prove to my parents they are great companions and are wonderful pets.

i think i may have a solution, a yorkshire terrier(if you like small breeds). They arent big enough to do any damage to furniture for the most part,if they do have accidents they arent very big, and they are hypo allergenic, my husband has bad allergies as well to dogs and our yorkies sleep with us every night with no problem! They are on the pricey side but theyre well worth it! They're also great because they dont need a whole lot of space if you dont have it and you can cart them anywhere. Run this breed by your parents and be sure to show them a picture because they are ADORABLE!!! you can find one for sale on craigslist, puppyfind.com, and also your local newspaper classifieds.
