How Old Do Teacup Yorkies Live to be….do They Die After a Couple Months?

I am interested in buying a teacup yorkie. They are very expensive and just found out they are the runt of the litter. Would anyone recommend this dog, or would it be a waste of my money to invest.

runts can live as long as any other yorkie.there’s a lady that breeds them i know and she has a 3 lb one 14 yrs old and still going strong.

Runt of the litter = not healthy but I have seen ones that live to 14-16.

I don’t recommend it because it’s supporting the people that don’t breed properly and breed the small and weak dogs for more money.

Just get a normal sized yorkie, they aren’t that much bigger.

Why, dude I can’t believe you just said that. Of course it’s a waste of your money! A mother dog and the father dog were runts who produced runt puppies who are overpriced and have many problems with them. They cost a lot of money for vet care, and surely will die young.
    Don’t you think it’s a waste!

The yahoo answer police are totally going to destroy you for asking this lol. The dogs live for 8-10 years. I personally wouldn’t purchase one because of the puppy milling for these small dogs.

Runt. Prone to many health problems that will shorten their lives considerably. It is truly a shame back yard greeders breed this poor little things on purpose for a ridiculous amount of money.

It is abusive to me. Please don’t waste your money.
A well bred Yorkshire Terrier is under 10 lbs grown and a great companion. Nobody needs a 2 pound ‘dog’.

You already know the answer – a waste of money. They are only bred by BYBs & mills so any you would get would be poorly & over bred to begin with the size issue added. The term is banned from usage by the Yorkie club.

well yorkies are small breeds and they do live for many years, only if they are healthy, but sometimes some small breeds like teacup yorkies have problems bc they have liver shunts. I would recommend having a lot of money saved up if you are planning on getting a teacup yorkie because they have some health issues that can be expensive, like repairing a liver shunt or repairing a heart murmur (which both run at least $1,500). if you are prepared for those types of things, then you can get one.

There is NO SUCH THING as a teacup Yorkie – they don’t live long because they’re only produced by bad breeders who throw together too-small, genetically and temperamentally unsound parents to get too-small, genetically and temperamentally unsound puppies. If you want a Yorkie, and you want it to be healthy and stable, why not just go to a REAL breeder and get a proper Yorkie? Lets see.. The dog is already small and being a runt will only make it much much worse.

Buy or adopt a regular sized and correct standard yorkie, do NOT waste money on something that will have you plucking out thousands to the vet every 15 minutes..

Anyone calling the pup a "teacup" Yorkie is basically a swindler. Read this article from the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America:

Well I haven’t known one to get much past a year old. You’re better off getting a standard size yorkie that will weigh 4 pounds. You’ll save money in medical. My friends spent over $5000 in vet bills and still lost their teacup yorkie before she turned 1. Lesson learned. Painful, expensive lesson.

The AKC doesn’t acknowledge teacups. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America has the above statement warning against them.

I’m sure they would live normal lives with the proper vet care. The more they are bred, the more issues arise. But how sad that you are even considering supporting these horrible puppy mill breeders.

And how much more sad for these little puppies.

Undersized dogs often die within a few years, usually from complications of their size like underdeveloped organs. If they make it past a few years, they might live up to 8 or 9, but will rarely live as long as their healthy counterparts- I’ve seen healthy, full-size Yorkies live to be over 20 years.

A properly bred Yorkie is only 5-7 pounds to start with- how much smaller of a dog do you really need? And don’t buy anything called a "teacup", the only people that use that word are crappy breeders, puppy mills, and pet stores, and all they want is $$$ from you- they care nothing about the animals.

many "teacup" dogs do not live long.. I know someone with a small 3 pd dog.. well, they HAD one.. it died when it was only a few years old.. it lived a miserable life as the poor thing had liver and kidney issues and suffered several siezures on a daily basis

another friend of mine purchased a teacup chihuahua, it died a week after he brought it home.

and some breeders label their dogs as "teacups" just to fool people into thinking they are getting an extra tiny dog.. its not uncommon tho for these pups to end up LARGER than what the breed standard calls for.
