Toy is not a size for a Yorkie.

"Teacups" are poorly bred dogs with health issues. They don’t exist in standard.

A yorkie should be 5-7 pounds.

the person above me is wrong on one thing, toy IS the correct term for the group of dogs the Yorkie belongs to, they are part of the Toy Group

There are no such things as tea cup Yorkies or even Chihuahua’s. There are just the runts of the litter. Weight can range from 3 lb to over 8 lbs or more if they are mixed. You have to socialize them to be around kids and other animals.

Yorkies have ONE size – 7 pounds and under. Small breed dogs in good health and care can live 10 years or longer. As for how good they are with kids and other animals is dependent on how well YOU train and socialize him/her

Every dog is different. You can get an 8 lb Yorkie or a 4 lb one. You can get a mean, aggressive barky one or a calm, quiet one. Everything depends on the parents (genetics) and where you get it from. Anytime you get a Yorkie, it should be AKC registered to prove that it is purebred, healthy and has no aggression in its blood. Another cheaper option is to adopt a Yorkie from a shelter. They are tested to make sure they are healthy and friendly before being put up for adoption.

So make sure that if you do adopt one from a breeder that you are able to see the parents–their size, their temperament, personality and health so you know what to expect. If they don’t let you see the parents, don’t get it. Unless it is from a shelter where they are at least tested so you know exactly what you are getting. You will know if they are good with kids before you get it. Plus, animals in the shelter deserve a second chance and will die if no one chose to give them a home. For every animal bought, one in the shelter dies.

The smaller they are (usually under 5 pounds or so) or sometimes referred to as the made up name of "teacup" which isn’t an official term, do not actually live as long. They are so tiny due to a genetic defect and although cute, are very unhealthy so expect to pay a lot in vet bills.

Ok you are probably going to get alot of nasty answerz regarding this question… teacup/toy breeds arent the best breed of dogs. They have a lot of health issues and some will argue they are runts of a litter gone wrong.

To answer your questions the best I can:
Toy dogs are very small dogs that were originally only found as part of the wealthiest families in rich communities. Today however toy dog breeds are enjoyed as pets in different homes around the world. The toy dog groups contain most of the smallest dog breeds in the American Kennel Club’s registry. There are some differences however in distinction when it comes to teacup versus toy dog breeds. We will discuss some differences between toy dogs and teacups in this article.

    What are toy dog breeds?
Toy dogs are the really small dogs you’ve probably seen around all over like Chihuahua’s, and Havanese puppies. They are a lot cheaper than the larger canines and somewhat easier to look after and care for. They shed less and the cost of food, grooming, and other dog items is much less expensive than other large dog breeds. Besides their small size however, they can pack quite a punch into their little bodies. They will sometimes think and try to take on much larger dogs than you might think.

The toy dog group consists of several different dog breeds. They are generally adorable, compact animals and can vary in regards of temperament and personality. The toy dog group is made up of the smallest dogs around, however some of the toy dogs come in other sizes as well like the poodle. The poodle can be found in the toy group, as well as the standard and miniature group.

Some toy dogs will excel as being watchdogs and will raise alarm at even the slightest noise or movement. Depending on your personality this can be a good or a bad thing. And even though they’re small they’re not all suited well to children; in fact some should not be around children at all as they are too fragile and little to take a playful beating. They are great companions of apartment dwellers and the elderly as most of the toy dog breed love to be around people and will become very attached to their owners.

Whether or not they train easily will depend largely on the breed of toy dog you plan on getting. Some breeds like the toy poodle or the fox terrier are extremely easy to train and others are extremely stubborn and headstrong.

    The Truth about "teacups"
Unfortunately there is no such thing as "teacup" dogs or a "teacup" dog breed. With that being said let’s talk a little more about what the whole teacup thing is about. The puppies that people are referring to as teacups are the dogs that generally weight between 2 to 4 pounds. The word "teacup" has been used basically to describe the size of the puppy. The standard size for a dog in the toy group is between 4 and 7 pounds. Anything smaller can pose a risk to the dog as well as anyone who wants to buy one. They are extremely fragile and can break bones easily from a small jump off the couch. Many breeders unfortunately will try and sell small puppies and call them teacups claiming that they have bred them on their own, but this is not true. Teacup puppies are not a breed of their own. The actual facts are that when you breed a small dog and an even smaller dog together you usually end up with a tiny dog with a lot of health problems; dental problems, heart failure, sugar problems and those are just the beginning. The smaller the dog the more chances it has of not living a long and healthy life like it should.

So teacup versus toy dog breeds; well you can’t really compare the two since teacups are not really a dog breed of their own. If you’re looking for a small dog stick to the toy dog breed as they usually breed much healthier and will live longer. Whichever you decide to do make sure you do your research.

Teacup Yorkies arent any bigger than 3lbs. They dont live very long due to A LOT of serious health issues. They are great with kids and other pets yes – just train them properly.

I think what’s being confused is the size of the dog with the group it’s in. Yorkies are part of the toy group, small dogs that were bred for companionship. As far as ‘teacups’ are concerned, likely you’ve heard enough to know they are not a legitimate distinction within any breed. Also know that many of the ‘teacup’ puppies that are bought for a premium price often end up standard sized, or even larger than the breed standard calls for.

I’m glad you did your research! No there is no such thing as a Teacup Yorkie. The breed standard for the Yorkshire Terrier is supposed to be 4-7 lbs, which believe it or not, is already very small.

AKC has a group labeled as toy. However only a few of these breeds that do have a prefix of ‘toy’ but Yorkie is not one. There are Toy Poodles, Manchester Terrier, Fox Terrier and English Toy Spaniel.

Generally small dogs are not great with kids because kids don’t understand how fragile they can be. They can be relatively okay with cats if raised and trained to respect them. However, they are Terriers and Terriers were bred to hunt small animals.

Small dogs can live as long as 15-20 years.
