Why are teacup Yorkies so popular?
When I was researching the breed, almost every page I found was from a teacup breeder or owner. Why are they so popular? They're especially fragile and prone to health problems. Regular Yorkies are 4-7 pounds. Isn't that small enough? I can easily imagine a teacup owner saying, "I lost my dog in the house!" because they're so tiny.
its a fad, hopefully this fad that creates unhealthy dogs will be a short lived one. but the so-called "teacup" size is very popular due to the cuteness factor.

Technically, there's no such thing as a 'teacup' breed. Teacup Yorkie, Teacup Pomeranian, Teacup Chihuahua…. none of those truly exist. Its just simply small, sickly runts bred with other small, sickly runts. People slap a cute name on it, put a bow in its hair and sell it to people who want a living fashion accessory. I think people are SO drawn to cute, small dogs that the idea that they'll always be that small appeals to them. Unfortunately, many irresponsible pet owners call themselves a breeder and sell their runts to uneducated people. For as long as people buy them, there will be people who breed them.

it's funny because Teacup Yorkies are actually regular Yorkshire's with birth defects…they are NOT supposed to be that small

Because people are stupid sheep who will follow any cutesy fad. If Paris Hilton and the other waste of space celebs have it then it MUST be cool and that means the gen. public HAS to have it.
These same people also believe anything they find on the net as gospel truth rather than talking to a REPUTABLE breeder or even god forbid going to the breed club website.
That and they think rules for public places don't apply if you can stuff the poor animal into a damn purse.

They are unhealthy and as you said very fragile. In my mind they don't have many 'dog like' characteristics, these have all been bred out of them.
Unfortunately they are bred for people who want their dog to be a 'baby'. They don't want dogs, they want a baby that is easier to look after. They carry around their dogs and don't let them walk anywhere, dress them up and don't let them meet other dogs leading to unhappy, unhealthy dogs that should never have been allowed to have bred anyway.

Because people would rather spend enormous abouts of money for runt that has the tendency for health issues, instead of researching Responsible breeders.

I have three yorkies and my female is only 2lbs. there is nothing wrong with her, she is smaller but the most lovable. Yorkies are cute and a very loving dogs. There is no such thing as a tea cup. My males from the same mother and father are 7lbs and 10lbs and like I said the female pup is alot smaller. I love them to death they are GREAT DOGS!!!! Thinking of getting one you will not regret it.
