8 week old Yorkshire terrier?

I just got a 8 week old Teacup terrier for my graduation present and she is having a hard time going poop. She is constipated and i don't know what else to do. She is on puppy food called Royal Canin and petsmark recomended it. I called the vet and she said to soften her food with warm water to make it moist, and i tried that, but still no luck. She is miserable and i need help fast!

Increase her fluids by encouraging her to drink as much as possible, and adding water to her food does help to up this some more.

You can try adding a little canned pumpkin to her food, that sometimes helps. Also, let her drink a little milk, it can also help to loosen her bowels.

I'd also suggest increasing the amount of exercise she gets. I know she's just a tiny puppy, but keeping active enough and drinking enough are the two main keys to keeping the digestive system 'moving along'!

Good luck with her.

Take her for a walk so she gets tired and needs a drink. In her water put a little epsom salt in there. Follow the directions on the back. Otherwise there is a product called Cat-Lax that you can give her. Good luck! You should post a pic of that cutie!

My 5 month old Yorkie is constipated right now and from all I've read, people recommend putting a tablespoon of canned pumpkin in the food. I'm going to try that tonight to see if it helps. Make sure it's pure pumpkin….not the kind with spices for pies.

I really like pumpkin for either constipation or diarrhea. Dogs like it a lot, and it is loaded with fiber so either way it can help normalize a stool. Just plain pumpkin - NOT pumpkin pie filling! If you use it, your dog will poop orange. That is normal.

In addition, you can take her temperature. Firstly, you'll find out if she is becoming ill. Secondly, sometimes the stimulation will produce results.

If she continues to have trouble, make sure all of her food is moistened, or you can mix canned and dry. Just be sure to closely watch her dental health if you have to do that.

Congratulations on your graduation from school and to pet ownership!

Good Luck!

Pumpkin is good for diarrhea or constipation. So you don't waste what is left - freeze it in an ice cube tray and then after frozen transfer to ziploc and store in freezer so you can take out what you need next time. To prevent constipation in the future, I would start moistening her meals until she is a little older.

You'll want to make sure that you use the pureed canned pumpkin, or you can puree your own using a fresh pumpkin. Either way however don't buy pumpkin pie filling by mistake; it's definitely not the same thing. The following scale will help you determine how much you should mix into every meal.

Pets who weigh less than 15 pounds = 1 - 2 teaspoons
Pets who weigh 15 - 35 pounds = 1 - 2 tablespoons
Pets who weigh 35 pounds and up = 2 - 5 tablespoons depending on size

My daughter went through this when she was a toddler. Her pediatrician told us to add a very small amount of mineral oil to her milk. It gave her relief, but be prepared for diarrhea. I realize dogs & kids are different. In her case, she had become constipated and was afraid to go to the bathroom because of the pain. The mineral oil got her over the fear and initial blockage. Your pup may need different food.
