How to choose a teacup Yorkshire Terrier?

Some breeders prices are really high (in the thousands) while others are more reasonable, between three to four hundred dollars. Does anyone know much about these dogs? Are tinnies from non-champion blood lines more likely to get sick? Any Information about the general health/upkeep of these dogs would be great!

The best choice when it comes to ANY "teacup" breed is not to choose it.

There's no such thing as a "teacup" dog, unless it's ceramic or porcelain.

If you are in the US, then the best breeders to choose from show their dogs and are with the http://www.ytca.org . Pretty much anyone else is a Backyard Breeder or puppy mill.

Remember, Yorkies are supposed to be under 7lbs.

Are you aware that teacup yorkshire terrier has numerous health issues? Do you want to pay alot of money for them and plus paying extra more for their health issues because they are too tiny?

The general health of a "teacup" is pretty poor. Come on, if you want a yorkshire terrier, then get one. There's no such thing as a "teacup" anything. They're a scam, they're runts, they're over-prices, under-sized dogs sold by backyard breeders to the gullible public.

You can't choose from Teacup Yorkies because there is no such thing. Please don't waste your money to buy a runt and be scamed by backyard breeders.

I don't have a Yorkie myself, but we did a lot of research on them when my mom got one. One site you should definitely check out is YorkieTalk.com where there are lots of articles and a really active message board forum where you can get the scoop on buying, health, and fun stuff from thousands of Yorkie owners and even breeders….Good luck– they are such awesome dogs!

Quit looking for a "teacup." Go to akc.org and look up your local breed club. Contact them for a reputable breeder in your area. You will pay less than you would for the designer teacup puppy, and have a much healthier, better-adjusted dog.

No responsable breeder would ever sell any dog using the words teacup in the name.

You choose NOT to get a teacup!

Since "tinies" are not up to standard, they can't really come from champion bloodlines! Maybe WAAY back, but any good breeder would pretty much hurl if one of those little runts was presented to them as a well bred dog!

You answered my question about the 1 ounce 7 week old puppies right? You said it was normal? Do you realize how disgusting that is?! Look at a bag of food, and how many ounces that is. Do you really think that a dog that weighs that much is going to be healthy.

http://www.ytca.org/faq.html#A They are very unhealthy!

http://www.ytca.org go here to find a REAL breeder, and no it will not be cheap. Rescue if you want to save money.

I'm just going to echo what everyone else is saying. The word "teacup" is added to make you pay more for a runt dog that has heath problems in much numbers you'll be spending half your life at the vet. The best types of dogs are mixed breeds. They tend to be the most healthy because they don't have genetic issues are bred into most pure-bred ones.

If you still want a pure-breed dog go to real good breeder. Not a pet store not an ad in a newspaper. Get a real Terrier and keep it happy and healthy. Don't buy into this whole small is cute=$1000 crap.

The word teacup is a fancy word for 'runt of the litter', it lets the breeder get top dollar for a dog they couldn't have given away before.

If you're paying 'thousands' you better darn well have a top show dog. Anyone paying that kind of money is going to either be getting a grand champion or they're getting fleeced by the seller. Standard purebred pricing is $200-$500 and it better come with up to date shots and a vet check. Plus spaying or neutering if it's over 4 months of age.

Don't get rooked. Breeders hike their prices up to see how much anyone will pay. The runts do come with health problems, so figure you'll be spending more on medical care than you would with a normal size puppy. And anyone trying to breed a female teacup would be looking at loosing their dog if they don't have a cesarian done, as the puppies skulls are too large and would not be able to go through the hip hole to allow them to be born properly. It's irresponsible to breed the small dogs because of this.

be very careful of tiny dogs. usually they are the less healthy versions of "real" breeds, because "tiny" seems "cute," when it should mean "fragile."

We spent $800 on a tiny dog, only to discover it had multiple health problems, and would likely need at least $1000 surgery to fix kneecaps that often slipped out of their sockets, causing the puppy excrutiating pain. By age 4 months the puppy was dead, after a simple tumble off a bed resulted in sudden death. Apparently the loose joint problem also affected it's neck, and it's spinal cord severed it's brainstem with minimal trauma. Only later did we discover this "teacup" dog was likely the unhealthy product of a puppy mill.

After that heartbreak, we purchased a healthy dog from a reputable breeder, (for only $600,) and we were impressed by how "sturdy" and generally "un-scrawny" our new puppy was.

Never, ever again will we fall for the scam of a scrawny puppy mill runt, billed as a "teacup."

Sweetheart, I really hate to disappoint you, but there is No Such Thing, as a Teacup anything. Teacup is only a term, that Very Irresponsible Backyard Breeders use, when they breed one Runt (Smallest puppy in the litter), to another Runt to produce smaller puppies and charge people outrageous prices for them. When you hear the term Teacup, run as fast as you can, in the other direction! Most of the time, these puppies have very serious health issues and do not live very long lives. Standard Yorkies are small enough. Don't waste your money on so-called Teacups. These so-called breeders, could care less about the welfare of these poor Runts that they breed, or if their Runts die during welping. They just move on to the next Runt, and the process just keeps repeating itself. All these so-called BYB's care about is making money! I used to breed Chihuahuas! I never even considered for one second, breeding any of my Runts, that were from normal litters and putting them through the trauma, and risking their lives! I Love my Chihuahuas way too much to do that! I would never be that Cruel or Inhumane to my Chihuahuas! Runts are way too tiny and should never be bred for any reason whatsoever!
