Im getting a Teacup Yorkshire Terrier soon. Any tips?

Im really excited to finally be getting a dog after all these years. Its been a goal of mine for a long time and Im happy to be introducing it to the family. I need some tips!
Wow, really? Thanks for the heads up! Also, Is there a specific name for a terrier mix who's tail has not been docked? I don't wish to own an animal who has been tampered with - Its almost abusive to tweak the appearance of one.

Aside from all the teacup stuff, you could always just get a yorkie and ask the breeder to skip the docking on your pup. Most breeders should be willing to comply if you're not buying a show puppy =]

But, if you're still thinking of going to the breeder with the "teacup" runts, you definitely need to find a different breeder who actually knows what they're doing. Its really great to see someone who actually listens when people say there's no such thing as teacups though! Most people just go, "noo, its just really rare!" So kudos on that =]

Yep, buy the ceramic kind. Teacup Yorkshire Terriers do not exist…if someone is trying to sell you one, dont buy it. Its a poorly bred unhealthy runt.

Keep it away from small children and have it fixed.

yes don't get a tea cup (just a fancy name for an unhealthy, poorly bred dog). if you want to save some money on vets bill go with a good breeder instead.

Small dogs are very nervous dogs (at least mine did). He circled the table and was so afraid of other humans. They are also very hyper dogs. but also very protective. I loved having mine. He had a very good since of other people and loved to play. I hope all works out for you!!

Don't get a teacup, it's just a marketing term to get unsuspecting buyers to shell out big bucks for a substandard animal from a crappy breeder..

Go to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and get a well-bred Yorkie of correct size (7 pounds or less) from a reputable breeder.

EDIT: There is no special name for a terrier with an undocked tail.

If you are buying from a good breeder, and the tail is traditionally docked, then the breeder is highly unlikely to leave one undocked for you. This is because docking is done at 3 days of age, which is much too young for the breeder to decide which puppy they are keeping for show (unless the pup has an obvious fault, like a mismark).

If you don't want your dog docked, you need to choose a breed that is not normally docked.

Tip #1. Separate yourself from the bleating herd of sheeple who seem completely and totally incapable of doing breed research and reading a breed standard.

Tip #2 There is NO SUCH THING AS A TEACUP DOG

Tip# 3 Find a reputable breed through the Yorkshire Terrier Club http://ytca.org/breeder1.html

Tip #4 Read the breed standard http://ytca.org/standard.html

Tip# 5 Read the YTCA's Statement on "Teacups" http://ytca.org/faq.html#A

ETA: First you want a badly bred dog with a stupid label slapped on it from a disreputable breeder but you don't want a dog with it's tail docked?…..RIIIIIGGGHHHTTT

The very existence of dogs is do to us "tweaking" with with them Good breeding is "tweaking" with them. Spaying/Neutering is "tweaking" with them. What makes tail docking which is done before a pup is 4-5 days old any different?

The odds of you finding a reputable breeder willing not to dock will be slim to none, simply because of the time frame and the fact unless the pup is OBVIOUSLY pet quality at that age it is impossible to tell pet quality from show potential.

As others have mentioned, there is no such thing as a teacup Yorkie. If the breeder you are getting one from claims otherwise, then it's likely not the kind of breeder you want to get a dog from.

I would suggest that before you actively try to acquire any dog, you at least take the time to research the breed first. It will better enable you to make a wise decision and help you avoid being taken advantage of.

In regards to the tail being docked, you are going to be hard pressed to find that. A docked tail is part of the breed standard, which is something reputable breeders strive to achieve. You may find a breeder that doesn't give a hoot about the standard for the breed, but again, not likely the kind of breeder you want to consider.

You could possibly contact some breeder who are expecting a litter and ask that one be held back and the tail left intact. (Tails are docked at 3-5 days of age.)
