Poodle Hybrid Designer Dogs

Designer dogs are really hybrid or cross-breed dogs that have been developed to try and gain some positive characteristics or lose some negative characteristics from the founding pure-bred dog breeds. “Poo” hybrid dogs where the Poodle is crossed with a number of breeds such as the Labrador Retriever (Labradoodle), Golden Retriever (Goldendoodle), Maltese (Maltipoo) Cocker Spaniel (Cockapoo), Bichon Frise (Bich-poo), Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkipoo) and the Schnauzer (Schnoodle) are very popular. This is because the Poodle is a very intelligent breed with a non- or low-shedding odorless coat which is said to be hypoallergenic. While there is no guarantee as to what characteristics will be passed on to the first generation puppies from the breeding parents, the Poodles non-shedding coat seems to be a dominant characteristic which is often passed on to the first generation of puppies, accounting for the popularity of the “poo” hybrids. I guess if you wanted to ensure a hypoallergenic and non-shedding coat, then you should acquire a Maltipoo, Schnoodle or a Bich-poo where both parents have non-shedding coats. It should be noted that there are really two types of Labradoodles. The first is the unofficial mixed Poodle/Labrador designer breed described above and the second is the Australian Labradoodle which has resulted from an exhaustive Australian breeding program involving 6 different parent breeds: Poodle, Labrador Retriever; Irish Water Spaniel; Curly Coat Retriever; American Cocker Spaniel; and English Cocker Spaniel.

Most of the Poodle hybrids are quite attractive with beautiful coats. Colors range from whites and creams to apricot, brown, chocolate, silver, gray, black and multi-colored. Their coats are low to non-shedding and will need combing, brushing and clipping on a regular basis. Poodles are very intelligent and most “poo” hybrids should be fairly easy to train. Since there are three sizes of pure-bred Poodles (Toy, Miniature and Standard), you can have many different sizes of “poo” hybrids. Through the wonders of artificial insemination, the smaller Toy and Miniature Poodles can be bred with larger breeds such as the Labrador or the Golden Retriever to produce smaller designer dogs. While a Poodle could be either the dam or sire in most pairings, in this situation the Labrador or Golden Retriever would be the dam. One of the most popular designer dogs today is the Cockapoo which can take many forms. The Cockapoo Club of America recognizes two main types of Cockapoos – the American Cockapoo (Poodle/American Cocker Spaniel cross) and the English Cockapoo (Poodle/ English Cocker Spaniel cross). Four sizes of Cockapoo are designated. These are the: Teacup Toy (under 6 pounds grown weight); the Toy (7 – 12 pounds); Miniature (13 -18 pounds); and Maxi (over 19 pounds). Information on “poo” hybrids such as Cockapoos, Goldendoodles and Labradoodles can be found at www.dog-breed-facts.com .

Many designer dog breeders insist that the first generation hybrid puppies will be healthier and have fewer genetic health problems than the founding breeds. They say that this is due to a phenomenon called hybrid vigor. Some breeders will even breed a first generation “-poo” hybrid back to another Poodle to try and ensure a non-shedding coat. The resulting back-cross will be ¾ Poodle and ¼ other founding breed. Other experienced hybrid breeders tend to focus on producing a multi-generational line of hybrid puppies with standardized characteristics by breeding non-related hybrids with the desired characteristics. It is really up to you as to which type of designer dog hybrid – first generation, back-cross or multi-generation – that you purchase. However since the founding breeds are always pure-bred with potential genetic problems, purchasers should always ask to see the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) certificates for both parents. This combination of genetic testing and cross-breed vigor should help to ensure you acquire a healthy puppy.

Does anybody else here despise hybrid dogs/designer dogs?
Whoever thought it was a good idea to breed a pug w/ a beagle, a golden retriever with a POODLE, a lab with a poodle, and so on is a moron. those breeds should have never been mixed. Oh and also- there is no such thing as a "purebred" goldendoodle, etc.
Ok– that's what I meant– the stupid people breeding them for the money.. etc.

I do not and could not ever despise any dog no matter what it is… hybrid or otherwise.. IT IS NOT NOT NOT the dog's fault..It is the owner's fault and those are the ones you should have a dislike for.

I don't despise the dogs themselves, but I do despise backyard breeders that breed animals without regard to their health, like brother & sister, parent & child breeding. I think that's just as wrong for animals as it is for people. There are too many homeless dogs in shelters already. We don't need designer dogs.

I agree.. there are too many other dogs out there that need homes before we start selfeshly breeding more dogs.

Nope, I sure don't despise them. I love all dogs, and there is a dog to match every human personality.
I DO despise breeders who don't bother to have the parents checked for genetic defects. They think because they are mixing breeds, that it is not important, but they don't realize that the off-spring is predisposed to ALL genetic problems prevalent in either breed….
They are selling heart aches, wrapped up in puppy clothing.

dog breeder since 1968… I work at a doggy day care/boarding kennel, and see those sweet heartaches every day. They are on all manner of medications for chronic diseases…heart murmur, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, hip dysplasia, juvenile cataracts, etc…..

Edit: Just a note…Retrievers and Poodles come from the same original birding/retrieving foundations, so are not an unnatural cross. Labradoodle is very close to the Portuguese water dog, and the Chesapeake Bay retriever.

You're not getting the clear message.
It's not about despising designer dogs, it's about what people support when they purchase designer dogs. They support back yard breeders and/or puppy mills, both of which rarely if ever do anything good for either breed they are mixing.

If you understand the above, then you will understand much of the sentiments here. It's bad news to support these types of breeders. They are often very un-ethical , and again, do very little to help either breed.

How exactly do you think they got those Pugs, Beagle's, Poodle's, etc? Selective breeding for certain traits has been around for centuries, and will probably continue. I think the attitude that a dog that looks a certain way shouldn't be crossed with a dog that looks different is not only ludicrous but is snobbish and ignorant. Mix those gene's up a bit and perhaps there won't be so many 'pure breed' dogs with health and behavioral problems.

    Keep saying it…OVER & OVER !!! I wish I knew how to paste in "IT'S A F-ing RIP-OFF,SCAM,CON,etc.etc!!!" so I didn't feel compelled to type it ..Over & Over & Over & OVER!!!

BUT…if we can stop just a few ignorant dupes from giving money to crooks….guess it's worth it.

    Thanks for trying.

HEY CHETCO!!! The blanking "labradoodle'" was a FAILED experiment!!! By folks who shoulda known better.

"NEW" breeds are NOT developed by making MUTTS.

    "4 or 5 generations" ??? BULL!!!

A true pure breed dog even one of the older pure breed only has to have proof of four or five generations to be considered pure breed and for the record many pure breed dogs at one time or another in the history of the breed have been reconstructed in the image of the breed. the idea that a dog is a hybrid due to the mixing of so called pure breed (one which has a long pedigree) a true hybred is the Coy-Dog (Coyote-Dog mix) the mixing of two distinctive Species. Designer dog breeder are most likely in the business for making Money, but this does not make what they are doing any different than what pure breed dog breeders are doing. the differnce is that one is stepping on the toes of another. but is much more risky. the doberman pinscher was developed over about 10 years in the late 1890's and today is considered a pure breed. many of the designer dog breeds have been developed over the last two decades this does give them some carateristics of the early pure breeds. befor eyou start trying to put down a designer dog you really should get your facts in order. I do dispise the designer dog profit focus but I do not make it the dogs problem it is a people problem.

Although I agree that designer dogs are mixed breeds, I don't necessarily think that all of these types of "hybrid" breedings are wrong.

The Guiding Eyes for the Blind sometimes breeds "hybrid" seeing-eye guide dogs in order to get the temperament qualities of both the lab and golden retriever in its guide dog puppies. The reason they produce GLABS is that they generally are
easier to manage than Labradors but more confident then golden retrievers. So you get the best of both breeds.

So, I don't know if I can blame people for trying to create a dog "breed" like the goldendoodle if they really want that "softer" golden retriever temperament in a dog who doesn't shed for their family who happens to have an allergic kid who really wants a dog.

It is a tough call. I think that there are too many dogs in this world that are bred for the wrong reasons, but what are the right reasons? Shelters are overflowing with unwanted pets, feral dogs, and abandoned strays because our lawmakers refuse to pass laws that require ALL PETS to be spayed or neutered. Until that happens, our shelters will continue to be full and countless dogs will continue to be euthanized.

So, I guess my response to your question/comment is that there are times when I think designer cross breeding is justified (seeing eye dogs, allergies, etc), but I strongly feel that MOST dogs and definately ALL PET DOGS should NEVER be bred at all. Only the best of the best of the best should be used for "improving and continuing the breed". We need breed Wardens like they have in some European nations to monitor and control which dogs can and cannot be bred. Maybe then our dog population numbers would start to decline.

    They are very overpriced mutts
Many just like tham are put down everyday in shelters all over the coutry becasue no one wants them. There are not enough homes for all that are born.
It makes me sick that people charge thousands of dollars for an accident.
Just shows that people will do anything to make a buck and they could care less who or what they hurt to do it.
