I Really Want a Ball Python but I Have a 2 Year Old Baby and a Toy Yorkie in the House.?

could a ball python pose a threat to them. and if so would a cornsnake be safe for them.

my daughter was raised from day one with many different herps in our home. many of them large and or aggressive. at around 4 years of age she was allowed to interact with the smaller more docile species we kept such as corn snakes and other rat snakes since, like the ball pythons as well, they pose no risk to a child and are the BEST pet snakes to have for beginners and children alike. now at 13 she routinely helps with the monitors and cares for ALL the colubrids and geckos. im not gonna lie to you she has got bit by everything in the house at this point . her first time was by a corn snake at 5 years old. she cried, she bled, she got over it and now laughs when she has a pissed off king snake constricting and trying to eat her hand. ive seen kids get bit by their own pet dogs and that is MUCH ,MUCH worse! when a child is old enough to understand soft, calm and gentle, its old enough to interact with a ball or corn snake. a child can just look and learn at any age (even at 2) enjoy your snake(which ever species you choose) and your baby.

ps. keep the dog away from the snake. they will probably not get along.(snake might get scared of the dog and strike out defensively or the dog might nip the snake and even a nip might kill a ball or corn snake.)

If you get the python from the time it is young and handle it frequently, they are usually very mellow. There is no guarantee that they might get scared or could hurt your baby or dog, but usually they are mellow animals. My suggestion would be to keep him in a cage and monitor him when he is out. Cornsnakes tend to be more feisty. I wouldn’t recommend one.

Babies are prone to putting things in their mouths, and reptiles carry salmonella, so I’d say no.

yes the ball python would be fine get when its a baby and u will be fine i have a full grown male and i got small dogs and he got out for three days and every one is fine but remember they are escape artists and just get a tight fitting lid and u will be fine and a corn snake is a bad idea. the tend to be more active and they get longer than an average ball python and would pose more of a threat and since they are thinner they can get out much easier. good luck

A ball is more gentle than a cornsnake, though it would grow to be far heavier. However, you would not be handling the snake with the toddler in the room, nor letting the child handle it… would you? Children that age cannot possibly understand how to handle any animal safely and kindly and every injury is the fault of the adult who permitted it.

Similarly you wouldn’t have the snake out with the dog in the room… would you? More likely the dog would bark, snap or paw at the poor snake, who would roll into a ball in self defence, making it even more of a target for the dog. It may be physically possible size-wise that a ball python could injure a toy Yorkie but temperamentally it’s far, far more likely the dog would terrify and possibly hurt or kill the snake.

Maybe stick to cuddly toys for the child and chewy squeaky toys for the dog? If you do get a snake, keep them all well apart. Snakes aren’t for babies.

Ball pythons are great pets as long as they are hand-tamed. I had one donated to me that hadn’t been handled for a long time and it would bite. So, you also have to pick them up often. I would recommend them though cause they are fairly easy to care for. Corn snakes on the other hand, will bite more often and they are super fast. We had one get out once, and never found it.

I wouldn’t worry – ignore the scaremongers in here and just make sure it’s in a secure cage, if you’re that worried buy some heavy duty cage locks, or use a really useful box (google it). They’re plastic so you don’t have to worry about them shattering if something bad happens and they’re very strong, and very good for ball python habitats. They also lock closed.

Ball pythons are some of the most docile of snakes, and handling them regularly should solve your problems – a ball python will never grow big enough to consider a dog food. I wouldn’t advise letting them play together, hehe, as the python could be a risk then, but you shouldn’t have trouble. They can escape, but generally only if you’re complacent and if you are, a bite from a hamster is considerably worse than one from a ball python!

A cornsnake would definately be safe but a Ball should be fine as well. It will never be big enough to eat them if that’s what you’ree worried about. Buy one under 2 feet and keep a in a reptile tank with a locking lid and you’ll be fine.
