I have 5 kids14-girl, 12-girl, 7-boy, 6-boy, 3-girl. I'm thinking of getting a toy or teacup yorkie. Is there a different breed that would be better to deal with this many kids. Please help make up my mind. It has to be a small indoor dog. Also would a Female or Male dog be better to have?
Oh GOD! A yorkie will NOT do good in a household that large.
They tend to be nippers, and a 3 year old child doesn't do well with nippers, trust me.
I'd suggest a Lhasa Apso, Poodle, Wheaton Terrier, or (even though I personally dislike them) a Beagle.
By the way, Teacups are very unhealthy animals, in any breed. They're just runts.

Teacup is NOT a breed. It is just the runt of the litter! Defanitely a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel would be better!

Do not get anything that is represented as a "teacup". There is no such thing. If you do get a small dog, such as a chihuahua, you will have to be very careful and watchful. They are delicate, and could be easily injured by a child.

aw.. teacups are so cute! but they have to stay inside…male unless u want babys. btw…I would get a puppy so you can train it

Don't get a small frail dog. Not with a 3 and a 6 year old. I would recommend a Golden Retriever honestly. Or just research other kid friendly breeds.

pack the kids in the car and go to your local rescue centre, have a look around, and a dog will catch your eye!! staffies are good with kids, they are nicknamed the nanny dog, but they are generally aggressive toowards other dogs, all dogs are good with kids and other dogs and animals with the right socialization

I would opt for a SIlky Terrier. They look VERY similar to Yorkies but are a little more sturdier. You should also be cautious with toddlers and toy breed dogs. And just so you know, there is no such thing as a toy or teacup anything. If a breeder ever tells you otherwise….RUN!!

A Pug might be good, they are great with children.
You need to do more research though if you fell
for the whole *teacup* thing.

Well i think a yorkie would be way 2 small. Definitally if u have 5 kids…… I would highly recomend a cavalier king charles spaniel and if ur looking 2 get a purebred they r way cheaper.. But u should REALLY consider getting a pound dog or puppy…

I think if you are set on getting one and with the smaller children I'd wait a few years ….however if you are I'd get a female and get a toy…there isn't much difference sometimes you just pay more for the label….watch the pup really carefully as with all the activity at your home she could get stepped on etc…puppy training and take the older kids…

I'm probably not helpful with breed but if you get a female then you have less of a chance of your dog being Territorial and you can neuter/ spayed for there is no chance of puppies

first of all…. don't trust any breeder that advertises their dog as "teacup" since you have a 3 year old you should get a dog that's sturdy that she couldn't hurt on accident. i think a corgi would be good, or maybe a cairn terrier. Good luck!

DO not get a "teacup" this is a term made up by bad and BYB's to sell undersized ill puppies that end up costing 1000"s in vet bills and die young. Yorkies as any toy dog can be nippy. Some med. size dogs would be better. A beagle is a nice family dog

With kids that young, don't try for a trendy mini-pet. It's not just the bad breeding that is everywhere these days, it's also not fair to the dog. Kids as young as yours can be well intentioned, but it's not uncommon for them to accidentally injure the pup and then you have issues with the animal biting them.
There are plenty of small dogs at petfinder.com. Just go there, plug in your zip code, type "small" for dog size and see what pops up! The good thing is, you'd be able to get reliable info on both health status (they come with spay/neuter, shots, etc) and also temperament.
But think in terms of 15-20 lbs, not under 6. It won't work.
Good luck!

First, please realize there's no such thing as "teacup". "Teacup" is a fancy term used by irresponsible backyard breeders and puppy millers to describe tiny puppies. They're poorly bred, very fragile, often riddled with future health problems, and runts of the litter. A good breeder would never use these cutsie terms to make more money off of their puppies.
Secondly, the Yorkshire Terrier comes in one size. It's in the toy group, but there's no such thing as a Toy Yorkshire Terrier.
With that being said, a small dog such as a Yorkshire Terrier, wouldn't be a good match for your household. They tend to be fragile, and can become nippy when handled roughly. With 5 children, especially younger ones, a small dog could easily get dropped, stepped on, trampled over, etc. It just wouldn't be a good situation for the dog.
I would recommend you research a sturdier breed, such as Pug or Boston Terrier. They're still small, but are more suitable for households with young children. Please be sure you research the breed before getting it to ensure it's a good match for your family and lifestyle. Also, if you plan on getting one from a breeder, please be sure to take the time to find a responsible breeder trying to improve the breed.
Gender is a preference. They can both be wonderful. As long as you get your dog fixed, you shouldn't have any issues gender related (ex. marking, heat cycles, etc.)

There is no such thing as a teacup dog. Yorkies tend to be bity, and would probably not be good with a 6 and 3 year old. Look for gentle, family breeds like Golden Retrievers, and you will find something more reliable. Little dogs are more frail and can be injured easily, which is not what you want when you are raising a little kid. Males can sometimes be more distant, but it is really a matter of preference. I have a male and female, they are both wonderful, and the male is a 100 times more clingy and needy, so just try to choose. Male and female doesnt really make much difference, you should have either fixed, though.

well teacups are not a breed and toys are the size…..teacups are just way too small runts of litters…..and there are no teacup yorkies that isn't a toy breed….Example: i have a toy maltese but it is a teacup because it is the runt of the family!!!! u haven't done any research if u didn't know that……Maltese i think would be better for u as they tend to be more friendly and don't get as jealous of other pets in the house as yorkies do

it would be great to have a small dog! but sometimes small dogs are more of an adult person than a kid person, big dogs like golden retrievers and labs make a good family pet. they are more playful and caring. a female would be better because males lift there legs in corners if you were to have it inside it would pee your whole house! i have a boy dog its not such a good idea to have it inside

i have i toy poodle. it was a sweet puppy at first but became very bossy and aggressive. My nieghbor had a new yorkie puppy and now its a bit older they say the same as me that its getting more dominate greedy and so i would sugesst that you not get a really small dog. espcailly because your 3-girl she might want to cuddle with it and from my experience it will bite and hurt her adn the other kids. i sugest a large dog and i understand that you want a small one but look into it more before you get a smaller dog!

"Teacup" is just a name that has been placed on a smaller than average toy. There are standards to every breed and teacup isn't one of them.
Yorkies are not great with children. They are small, delicate and high strung. There are many smaller breeds that are much sturdier.
Also, keep in mind when you buy a dog with longer hair there will be much grooming required. You would be surprised after about six months of age how quickly your dog will become matted without DAILY brushing, not just on the surface but to the skin, and many puppies don't really like it.
I have only 3 kids (and I'm a dog groomer) and I do not have the time to properly care for a long haired dog.
Look into a rat terrier or a miniature dacschund.

Small dogs are often NOT good with little kids
You have a housefull. I would wait till the kids are older
Adopting a dog is like adopting another child, a LOT of work, and they can't be left alone too long when you are busy with the kids
They should never be put to live outside. Ruins a dog
Dogs are like people. They each have different personalities and needs. You need to find the right match for your lifestyle.
Every dog is different, even within breeds.
NEVER buy a dog from the pet store, or classifieds, or websites. Those are the puppy mill puppies. Big trouble! See http://www.stoppuppymills.org
And many of these toy breeds have severe health and behavior problems due to all the bad breeding going on. And they are not good with small children.
You need to find the right individual dog. For example, a housebroken adult that is quiet and good with kids, or whatever your needs are.
Instead look at http://www.petfinder.com
Talk to some shelters and rescue groups and breed rescues. Have a conversation with an adoption counselor about your lifestyle, needs.
You need to find the right MATCH.
Appearance doesn't matter. They can be cute as heck, but if they rip up the house or need huge amounts of exercise, not so good, especially if you are busy.
(most of these yorkies and cavaliers and the rest that people are mentioning are coming right out of the puppy mills. Big problems!)
