FUSSY TOY YORKSHIRE TERRIER?

I have a four month old male toy yorkshire terrier. He is a real fussy eater. I've tried all kinds of puppy food including dry. He'll eat chicken and ham but I want him to have dog food to make sure he's getting all the vitamins he needs. Any ideas? And please only genuine answers please

Do not give him other than the designated puppy chow. If there are other options, he will take them and try to wait for it. He will soon get hungry enough to eat his dog food.

Small dogs are notoriously fussy eaters. This may be because the dog is using it is a weapon to get more control over you. They are notorious foe being spoiled and get so much affection they treat it as the norm.

A dog needs a leader, you. Take him for long walks - about a mile for a small dog. All the time ensuring he knows you are leading. If he tries to wander to the right you deliberately turn to the left etc.

Do not be frightened to scold him when he does wrong.

If he does not eat immediately, leave him alone with his food . No comfort, no affection. When you return, if its eaten, praise him. If its not eaten take it away and leave him alone for a few more minutes. After that take him out for a walk and offer him the food when he gets back.

He's gotten so used to human food that he's hunger striking cuz he knows you'll give and and feed him people food. Buy a good quality brand dog food, (I use canidae)…..offer food to him 3-4 times a day. If he doesn't eat it in the first 15 minutes. Take it up till the next feeding time. Offer it again, keep doing this till he eats. A dogs natural instinct won't allow himself to starve to death. He just knows you'll give in and feed him something else. As soon as he learns you're not gonna cave, he'll eat what you've offered. You need to eliminate people food completely. (They have many kinds of dog food that come in chicken flavor). If you really think he must eat…try adding a small amount of chicken broth to the dog food, that will help give it the flavor he's used to and make it smell more attractive.

Toy dogs can be fussy eaters, try using a different variety food or canned food if he prefers it. Don't worry about him not eating he won't starve himself.

If you want to persevere with dry food, put it down for 10 mins then remove it, try this 4 times a day, he will eat when he is hungry, if he doens't eat for 48 hours don;t worry unless hes ill too

I had this problem with my yorkie. To be honest he still does this from time to time. They are really clever little things.

He is playing with you. The reason as to why i am saying this to you is that he wants a really really good meal and so he is picky for different foods. If he doesn't eat one meal, as usual we will find something else to give him to eat. He will realise that every time he doesn't eat a meal, he gets a different meal.

My dog use to eat only ham and chicken too so funny, what happened to me is happening to you.

So what i did was give him only two kinds of food. Dry and Wet.

So this is what i did to kick the habit:

In the morning I feed him as usual and leave it out for around 30 mins. If he doesn't eat it, i lift the bowl up and throw away the contents.( DO NOT FEED HIM any snacks etc. Or this will not work).

So he hasn't eaten one meal……

Evening meal, I feed him the same thing again. He will probably leave it again.

Keep doing this process for 3 to 5 days and I assure you he will eat and he won't be fussy.

I consulted the Vets before I did this and they said this is the best possible way to stop the problem plus the vets say they won't starve or anything as they will eventually eat.

If he hasn't eaten within 6 days then it is the food that he really doesn't like.

I hope this helps. My Yorkie is 6 years old now and he is really really good now. He eats what I give him.

* Tip: if you have a supermarket that does dog milk or puppy milk I would advise it as it can be a supplement to the food plus they love it. All my dogs love it - You can mix with dry or wet food*
