Is a Pomeranian Cheaper to Buy Than a Toy Yorkshire Terrier?

I am wondering if a pomeranian is cheaper to buy than a toy yorkshire terrier because I am not sure which one to get. which on should i get, any advice? And which one has a generally nicer temperament and is easier to train?

That just completely depends. Neither is a "cheap" breed. Temperament just depends. Terriers tend to be feistier.

  1. BYB's kill 1,000,000 dogs/yr says:

Yorkies only come in one size. They are in the Toy group.

Both dogs will be about the same price. Same as most dogs from a good breeder – $750-$1500.

These are two very different breeds, so you’ll need to decide which works best with your lifestyle. A little Spitz breed or a little Terrier. No one can decide for you. Neither is nicer and neither is easier to train. Both breeds are spitfires and not easy to train.

A yorkshire terrier is defined as 7 pounds and under therefore there is no such thing as a toy…….. its just a yorkie…. a pomeranian and a yorkshire terrier would probably be about the same obviously depending on their lines

My yorkies were £650 – £750, they are all kc reg and have excellent pedigrees

A Pomeranian should be much less expensive than a Yorkshire Terrier.

A pet quality Pom should be $500 or so, whereas a pet quality Yorkie may still be over $1,000

If you’re interested in show quality or champion lines, you would be spending much more…

I think the other posters have a good point: You should check the local rescues (even breed specific rescues) for just the right dog for your family. They will cost much less, and you can find a dog with the right temperament based on information provided by the rescue/foster home.

Both would be roughly the same cost if you went to a rescue. Breeders, who invest so much time, energy, and money into caring for each litter will probably charge you well over $1000 as they are breeding show quality pups whereas rescues just hope to cover the costs of spaying/neutering and shots to provide you with a loving, healthy companion.

A rescue would cost you about $150-$250. The dog would come up-to-date on all shots, spayed/neutered, and (most likely) microchipped. If the dog has lived in foster care (some rescues operate through a network of foster homes as opposed to a central shelter), it will also have gone through basic obedience training and been housebroken. So there won’t be any big surprises when you bring the dog home. I really would advise adopting unless you are hoping to show the dog.

Both breeds can be known to be yappy or nippy. But with proper socialization and care, neither should be issues. See the AKC website for general breed temperament. Of course, this is just a guide, as all dogs are individuals and each have unique personalities.

I think you should focus on temperament/BS traits instead of price, as that’s what’s going to matter in the long run.
I also think that if you’re focusing on price your more likely to end up with a sickly BYB pup, which will cost you a lot more in the long run.
Finely, have a look at rescues in your area for whichever breed you choose. There are plenty of both of these breeds waiting for their forever homes in rescues around the world.

I have one of each and adopted both of them. My Pom is very smart and much easier to train, although he can be stubborn at times. I just started him in agility and he is doing very well. I need a LOT more patience with the Yorkie.

If they are well socialized at a young age then temperament shouldn’t be an issue for either of them. I know Poms that treat everyone like their best friends. Mine is wary of strangers but warms up to them eventually. My Yorkie is very timid but very sweet. I imagine they both haven’t had ideal puppyhoods and need training to work on some minor issues, but they are still very wonderful dogs.

Toys are always cheaper – they require no upkeep or food. -_-

Yorkshire Terriers come in ONE size – the word "Toy" is no where in their name. They are in the AKC Toy group. A two pound dog is still the same as a seven pound dog – no recognized or named size differences.

As for cost – a well bred dog of either breed will cost in the range of $700-$1,500 or more. From a rescue, anywhere from $50-$300. But the price of their UPKEEP is going to be the same.

Monthly costs range from $70-$100 or more for a small breed. Vet care per year around $600 (shots, routine stuff, minor things like ear infections or worries.) Emergency care can cost well over $600 in one go. Then there’s boarding, grooming (of which BOTH breeds need), training, etc.

All dogs cost money. If you’re looking for "cheap" then you won’t find it when it comes to dogs OR dog care. Period.

Are the Americans that come on here spouting utter cap really that thick and nasty quite apart from having absolutely no idea what they are talking about? This question is intended for the UK site and has no bearing on what happens in the States or the opinions of little madams that have nothing better to do than insult everyone who comes hear.

To answer your question: Poms and Yorkies have totally different natures but both are wonderful breeds. Poms are much more delicate in structure than Yorkies and cannot take the ruff and tumble that terriers can. If there are young children around do not get a Pom as their little bones are easily broken but saying that no child should roughly handle any kind of dog. A Yorkie will cost anything from £200 upwards depending on the pedigree and as I said in your other question, Poms start around £750 for a genuine one. Pomeranians have a reputation for being harder to toilet train but for any other training they are comparable to any other breed. Just remember that whatever breed you get you really need to have insurance as vet bills can be crippling.
