Help Please…
hi,
to know what type of dog will suit you, you can use this dog finder match up http://tinyurl.com/6gkcok
the goal here is to help you figure out what type of dog best suits you and your personality. The results of the match up will suggest certain breeds. Here is also a list of good apartment dogs http://dogtime.com/good-apartment-dogs-list.html
hope this helps

I've heard poodles are really smart if you're willing to train it. They're def. cute too.
(: If I were in your situation, I would go with the toy poodle. They don't shed either.
However, any dog that you get needs training and exercise, even if it's an inside dog. You'd need to do your researched on whatever breed you choose, and be prepared to devote time to training your dog.

ALL dogs need training, money, and TLC. No dogs are born trained. It takes time and consistency.

Toy Poodles may look like cotton candy, but they are actually an intelligent breed. Chihuahua’s are okay…they will love you and be leary of strangers…good watch dogs. Dachshund are a personal favorite…but tend to be high energy at times.

All dogs need exercise, including small dogs. Small dogs, like big ones, need daily exercise and mental stimulation.
Why does it need to be so small? I do not suggest the “Dachshund” (notice, the correct spelling) Dachshunds are hunting dogs, have a lot of energy and can be barkers.

Daushound for sure

Shit tzus are great dogs..I have one and I love her. Just make sure you get from a good breeder.
Yorkies are good if you are willing to pay the money to get a well bred dog with a health guarentee b/c they can have health problems if not bred responsibly…same w/ toy poodles
Chi’s and pugs are good low maintainance dogs
doxies can have quite a few health problems as they age…
I may be biased but Id suggest a shih tzu

Groomer and dog lover
Maltese are very very small and very very loving. They are real lap dogs and love to sit around being pampered. They are very quiet but can be protective when needed. They are one of the sweetest dogs and they get along with other dogs, since they literally “have no bad thoughts about other dogs”–a quote from a dog book. They must be protected from other dogs since they are so sweet and are too vulnerable to be left alone with any other dog, aggressive or not.
Maltese are the little pure white dogs with long silky hair. My sister has had numerous Maltipoos (Maltese/Poodle mix) but those are a little more territorial and have sometimes curlier hair. Maltese are one of the best dogs to have in a small environment, they are loving and just so adorable. They literally become one of the family. I suggest Maltese. They are also NOT crazy type dogs. They have a calm disposition.

Have had Maltese and love them.
I think a Chihuahua or Shite tzu i had both and they are “neat” dogs they don’t like to be dirty or around dirt my Chihuahua is very lovable and truly loves me. Both breeds are spoiled my Chihuahua is in my lap now.
It all depends on your style, all dogs can be lovable they just have to be trained that way

just my opinion
out of those, i would choose a Dachshund. a spaniel is good too. what may surprise you is that a Great Dane would be pretty good although they’re not small. Great Danes don’t need much exercise, it’s actuallu bad for their joints. and besides they’re bred to be lazy dogs.

my friend Justin who lives in a small apartment
in my opinion the best small dog for an apartment is a yorkie or miniature yorkie. they are really mellow and easy to train and because it doesnt really shed upkeep is not really an issue. my aunt recently moved into a building that doesnt allow pets and she has a mini yorkie. she is very low profile, and nice and quiet.

The best breed in that list (and the ONLY breed in that list that you should consider…) is the toy poodle, also the shih tzu, they are generally quiet and good for apartments but NOT as a puppy…any puppy, no matter what breed, is going to be energetic and bouncy and probably chew everything up. I own two dachshunds, and they bark like crazy at most every noise they hear, which drives me crazy sometimes. BUT this is a trait of the breed… many, many dachshund owners complain of this. They can also be aggressive.
The chihuahua is also a big barker. Pugs have a lot of health issues but I have not heard anything about them other than that. So I would cross off chihuahua and dachshund from your list, they would not be for you if you live in an apartment and dont want a lot of barking. (i know from experience and the experience of hundreds of other owners on my dachshund message board.)
I heard yorkies are yappy dogs and bad with kids. So I would recommend to you either a toy poodle (which I have a toy poodle mix and she is very smart, very quiet and very loving, I adopted her when she was already about 2 years old and I have loved every minute i’ve had her!) My mother has a shih tzu who is now 14 and that dog has been very good and generally quiet thru its life.
So do NOT get a puppy — or you will have pooing and peeing, chewing, and a ton of energy for at least a year or two. I would get an adult dog… did you try looking for a small dog at your local shelter? Try going to petfinder.org and looking for a shih tzu or poodle in your area. Poodles are great dogs. but all dogs need exercise and time outdoors.

maybe you can go for an australian terrier, bichon frise, pomeranian, klien german spitz, lowchen, pembroke welsh gorgi, or a wiener dog
tip: make sure the dog you get isnt to small or else if you are in a crouded place the tiny dog might get squished

Dachshund. I’m guessing you live in the city. If you socialize him and bring him out everywhere, he WON’T bark. City dogs just don’t.
They are cute, but I think you should get the Miniature version. The Standard can weigh up to 32 pounds and are kind of ugly when they are fully grown.
So.. Good luck, but remember PUPPYS are LOTS of work. Try puppy pads, its probably hard to housetrain in an apartment, so its easier to just let your dog pee and poop on pads.
Get Stain and Odor Remover. You will need it.

Shih Tzus are companion dogs with mellow personalities and loving natures, they housebreak very easily and don't yip-yap as so many other small dogs do. I heartily recommend this breed to you because of their companionate nature. They are very lovable. They do not shed. Maintenance can be what you want it to be. If you do not want a long cut you can keep them trimmed in a puppy cut which requires very little upkeep.( I cut all my animals with a AS SEEN ON TV Flowbee about every 2-3 months or whenever they get real shaggy. I give them a good brushing to remove matting and snarls a couple of times per week and bath them every three or four weeks …my vet says this is a good frequency if they aren't out rambling in the dirt. They have a pleasant smell. They do not have a lot of hereditary illnesses to worry about. They do not grow too large…11-15 inches high and about 11 pounds when full grown. Try one …you'll love it!
Yorkies are similar in nature and in size but a bit more territorial and they can be very yappy when agitated. They are good little watch dogs and do not have many hereditary problems. I had a wonderful yorkie who lived 16 years and another who passed recently at age 14, so they can last a long time and remain pretty active even in very old age. Both of these dogs were quiet and affectionate. Neither was plagued by hereditary problems or bad health in old age, altho their sight deteriorated in the last few years of life.
Shih Tzu can live a long time also if you do not overfeed them.
My current dog is a Shih Tzu and she is just 6 months old now. We gave her plenty of chew toys so we have had no major destruction, she trained in a very short time to paper indoors and can also hold out for her daily walk when the weather is fair and we are at home with her. She enjoys animal channel and watches it when we are gone. She is pretty quiet and only gets to barking when she wants a treat
(which we trained her very quickly to ask for with a couple of short sharp barks…very cute!) or hears strange noises from outside the door. Normal daily sounds do not bother her. She is very loving and likes to lay beside you as you watch tv or at your feet while you work. Both of these breeds have very cute faces with bright lively eyes and they move with a cute little swagger that is endearing.
Hope these personal experiences with small dogs are helpful to you.

First Shih-tzu, Yorkie, and toy poodle breeds will run you around $40 to groom every-other month and require daily brushing. Out of these three I would suggest the poodle but a ton of socializing and training is also require for any dog.
Pugs, Dachshund, and Chihuahuas are all difficult in their own special ways I would suggest a pug from these breeds however if you were looking at pugs I would highly suggest a Boston terrier instead they are sweet and even tempered and because their noses are a bit longer have a few less medical problems

I’m a groomer
I would go with a pug. They normally never bite, are a perfect size and are very loving. They’re perfect for apartment life because they don’t require a lot of exercise. They’re only downfall is that they shed a lot, but if you can handle that, they’re the best little friend you could ask for.
