Yorkshire Terrier Toy Puppy?

Hi ive just bought a toy yorkie. she is 7.5 weeks old and weighs 1.9lbs! i have a 2 year old toddler and people worried me when they said the yorkie and the chile will not get on well. they seem to be fine so far, playing and bouncing around together. could anyone tell me if theres anything i should be expecting? ive heard so much bad stuff about yorkies and kids togetherm i keep thinking something's going to happen! as i said they seem fine so far.

All yorkies are in the "toy" group. Wow people! Your biggest concern with a pup so small is the damage that a boisterous toddler can do to it. They will continue to get along just fine so long as you make sure to teach your child how to play with the puppy safely. Small dogs and children aren't recommended as many people don't bother to teach their child to respect small animals, and as a result those children poke eyes, pull tails and ears, try and flush them down the toilet, drop them down a flight of stairs, etc. All of that sort of behavior leads to a fearful pup who may/maynot bite out of fear.

so long as you teach your child how to be a well-behaved, respectful child, there is no problem. I have seen a few toddlers I would trust with a small pup. I have seen many I wouldn't trust with the biggest, tamest animal out there! It all depends on you, and what you teach your child.

Congrats on the new addition, enjoy her, and be a responsible parent and owner and make sure to teach your child how to safely play with the pup so neither one of them gets hurt.

There is no such breed as a Toy Yorkie!! No Yorkshire Terrier should weigh more than 7lb.
If your child is good with the puppy, the puppy will be good with the child.

Yorkies are not much different than any other dog when it comes to children - other than the fact they're a little smaller and like any small dog can't take a lot of rough and tumble as a Lab might.

Yorkies do tend to be very territorial - their stuff is their stuff - so they can nip - but it's all a matter of establishing yourself as the alpha dog and controlling their behavior.

If your worried about something happening, why in the world would you bring that dog into your home?

Anyways, the breeder shouldn't have let you bring the pup home before 8 weeks. It's illegal in most states (if you're in the US). Most importantly, you need to teach your child how to interact with the dog. Many of the small dog and child bad experiences happen because children tend to play roughly with dogs, and small dogs simply cannot handle the roughness. When someone hurts them, they get defensive.

On top of teaching your daughter how to interact with the dog, get the dog into a good obedience class (once it has its shots).

You can never trust a new dog and a young child. One could hurt the other, in this case, I'd worry about your child hurting the dog because the puppy is so young and small. The child playing with him could be very dangerous to the small dog because he might be too rough on it. Why did you get the dog now? You should have waited until the child is older (7+) and can understand behavior for both of their safety. I'm sure you can return this dog and buy one in a few years.

if they are together from 7/5 weeks old, then she will grow up with the child, and they should be fine.

just keep an eye on them to make sure the toddler doesnt pull its tail hard or something, and if the puppy tries to play bite,

Did you research the breed of dog first? Hello…. I have a Yorkie and she's all about the "adults". However, just don't let the child squeeze to tight- might kill the thing…..

There's no such thing as a "Toy Yorkshire Terrier." It's just one breed called the Yorkshire Terrier.

Take the dog back to the breeder and go get a rescue dog that can point out a good Yorkie for you that gets along with children.

My advice is to never leave a child and a dog iin the same room without adult supervision. Its always better to be safe than sorry.

No dog is aggressive unless it has been brought up that way or has something medically wrong.

Follow that strict rule and you'll be fine.

Well, the term "toy" just means that the breeder is intentionally breeding dogs that are smaller than their intended size, which can cause health problems later. The Yorkie already has so many health issues.

But, I digress. I would really worry about a 2 year old and any small dog. Small children do not really understand how delicate a tiny dog can be. It's so easy for them to fall on them, step on them, accidentally hit them with something, pick them up wrong.

And, remember that a dog that is scared and in pain can and will bite. So, while it may be an accident, your child could accidently hurt the dog, causing it to lash out in pain or fear.

I would monitor them VERY closely, and never leave the 2 alone!

Firstly, as a Yorkie OWNER… there are Tea-cup yorkies, Toy yorkies and standard yorkies!
Secondly, Yorkies are harmless. If the yorkie is a puppy and raised with your child they will become best friends. The yorkie will protect the child and NOT harm it. A yorkie is only territorial once it gets older and IF a child is then introduced into the family. However, I have no problems with my yorkie, she knows her place. If you train them right, they respect their owners and are a loving and caring breed. People who label Yorkies as yappy, agressive etc. are ignorant and don't know the breed!

Child and dog are together from very young so if you teach your child respect for the animal as things progress there should be no reason why there are any problems. Ensure your child respects the fact that the pup will see it's basket as its own territory - a place where it can get a quiet moment to itself without being annoyed or teased by your little one. Remember though that puppies do like to play and they have very sharp needle teeth for quite some time. I dont see why you should have any problem - it's all about teaching the child and the puppy respect for one another. Hope you enjoy this pup - they are lovable little souls.
