I have a 3 month old yorkie and his hair is getting long, what is the best supplies to use? what # is a good cut on the groomer?
U don't need to clipper a pup that young;
instead, get them used to the vibration and loud -sound- of the clipper by simply running it, first in the same room, then nearer to the pup, then on the table, then by them, and finally On Them.
MANY Yorkies never have a clipper run on them; they are so small, many groomers use scissors only. these are much quieter!
use treats, petting, and praise to get the pup to be calm and happy on a grooming table. don't scold or smack; it only scares them, and grooming becomes a terrifying argument of U insisting, and the pup fighting U off.
the best de-tangler is a smooth-toothed stainless-steel comb; one end wide openings, one end narrow.
use the wide end first, in small sections, and after the comb goes clear to the skin without catching in a knot, then use the fine-side.
be VERy careful!! around eyes, mouth, ears, petticoats, armpits, and belly/genitals; these are very delicate skin, and they are also very sensitive.
if U are going to BATHE Ur dog or pup, always, always de-tangle right to the skin first!!
any small knot U skip will be an un-salvageable KNOT after getting wet, so combing every inch of the dog before they go in the tub is crucial.
after, don't rub the towel back and forth: the fine hair will tangle, and all that work will be for naught. gently wrap and SQUEEZE Ur pup/dog, then wrap a fresh dry towel around them and do it again.
gently combing out the hair while damp will also help to dry it ; HUMAN hair-dryers are much too hot!! they can burn a dog very badly; onl;y use them on no-heat, or just let the dog/pup dry off in their crate, and give them a dry towel to lie on.
best of luck!

on my yorkie I just cut it as short as I wanted it….but now that he is older I take him to a groomer. I would just start trimming his hair and then keep going when you want it shorter. I keep my yorkie short on top with a little fringe at the bottom and around his face its a little long. But its all in what you like. To me I like the puppy look better on yorkies than the long dragging coat. And its much easier to take care of too.
