Is it cruel to keep your dog's hair in a puppy cut?
My fiance and I have been researching dogs for sometime and a lot of the dogs we love have long hair (Yorkie, Havanese, Maltese, Bichon). Is it cruel to maintain their hair in a permanent puppy cut?
I don't think so at all. I believe most of those breeds over time developed the beautiful hair they are known for now for showing purposes through breeding. If anything I believe the puppy cut is not only easier on you but more comfortable for the dog. (No food stuck in fur, no knots, matts, poking her in they eyes).

N o it is not cruel. Espeacially if you dont have the time, patence and right tools to maintain the hair and brush it atleast 20 mins a day.

NO. What IS ridiculous is keeping your pet in a long, hard to maintain show cut if your dog isn't going into the show ring.
A puppy cut is simply that- short, easy to maintain, cute, and easier on the pet than show cuts.
Most people I know keep their pets in a show cut if they have a long haired dog- the few people I have met that kept their dogs in a long-haired cut that weren't show dogs were really very ridiculous women who were more concerned with looks than the happiness of their dogs.

Absolutely not! Actually if yo don't have the time/energy/resources to maintain the really long hair, it's more humane because their less likely to get nasty mats that pull their skin. Which is why most people who have these breeds who don't show them keep them in puppy cuts

No,it isn't cruel. It's better to keep them in a puppy clip than to let their coat grow out and get all matted.

No not cruel at all. Many smaller long haired breeds, like the yorkie and bichon, were bred for nothing more then lap dogs. The long hair was originally bred into them to attract lice off of their owner and onto them. It serves them no true purpose or function.
Some dogs, especially water dogs with their tight curls, were bred with the coat in mind to serve a specific purpose. Unless you have a poodle that is going to actively be hunting and retrieving, there is no need to keep it's coat long, for example.
Fur is fur. It doesn't hurt to cut it, and doesn't bother the dog at all.

It's not cruel if you maintain it. A puppy cut is usually about 1 inch long or a bit longer than that. The length means you will have to brush your dog at least 3-4 times a week to prevent matting. Your dog will need to see a groomer on a regular basis, usually every 4-6 weeks, if not more often. Because your dog would have to be scissored (instead of using clippers) it will cost you more.
If you want something a little easier to maintain, try to get your dog clipped to a length of about 1/2-3/4 of an inch. That length can be done with clippers and will not require as much care (but still a lot). This cut can be called a kennel cut, and the head and tail is left a bit longer than the body.
Talk to your groomer about a good length for you. If you don't like something, you can always get something different at the next grooming.

Why would that be cruel? It doesn't hurt the dog at all, and it makes your life a little easier. Don't let long hair keep you from getting your favorite breed, unless the cost of grooming is too much for you.

Why would clean & well-groomed be cruel?? Dogs have no idea what the different haircuts for their breed look like, nor do they care. They just want to be comfortable.
