Just Got Back From Vet & 15 Week Old Yorkie Weighs 6lbs. People Were Asking Me What She Was Mixed With?

She's 15 weeks, and weighed right at 6 lbs. I have AKC papers on her, so I know she's purebred yorkshire terrier, looks just like one aside from that. But several women and a guy asked me how old she was and what she was, I said 15 weeks and a yorkie, and one of the ladies was like "and what else?" I told her nothing else, she was purebred yorkie! The lady said she has a 12 year old yorkie and he is only 3 lbs. that whoever I got her from must have lied. HA! The lady only had one litter and the litter was AKC registered. Is this BAD that she's 6 lbs. at 15 weeks, almost 4 months? Everyone in the lobby was saying things about they've never seen a yorkie puppy as big as her, they thought she was a schnauzer with a bad hair cut, she must be mixed with something, etc. And now I am wondering, is that extremely big for her age? How much more should she grow as far as weight goes if she's about to be 4 months? I am going to post link to a picture below.

This one shows her entire body a little better so you can get a better idea on her size.

Hey there! Cute puppy. :-D The AKC standard for Yorkies is for them to weigh between 4-7 lbs as an adult. The trap that most people fall into whenbuying a dog is that AKC papers actually mean something – that it means they are getting a quality dog and it doesn't necessarily mean that. I am NOT saying that your puppy is not going to be a good companion, and often times off-type or larger representatives of the breed can be a little healthier, but you paid for a dog that will probably mature looking very off-type and probably not very recognizable as a Yorkie. She will probably more than double in weight which will put her way over the maximum adult size of a true-to-type Yorkshire Terrier. Did you see the parents or at least the mother? Was any genetic testing done to rule out inheritable diseases? Do the parents conform to the AKC standard (though I think we already answered this one). If the answer to any of these questions is no, then you were probably better off getting a mixed terrier pup from your local pound – you would have saved a life and not encouraged a backyard breeder to continue to produce purebreds that are so off-type. So the answer to your question – I doubt she is mixed with anything, but why spend the money for a purebred that doesn't look like a purebred??

She's big for a yorkie, yes. At adult weight, the AKC doesn't allow any (competing) yorkies to exceed 7 lbs. It doesn't mean she's not purebred though. It could mean that she would just bred poorly to conformation.

I've seen huge, gigantic papered miniature pinschers that were twice the size of ours. Just because they don't fit conformation by the AKC standards doesn't make them not purebred. It only makes them poorly bred.

You've no worries there – she's certainly, without a shadow of a doubt – a full blooded Yorkie! By the way – she's a little beauty!!! They are so photogenic at that age, love the lime-light ha ha. I had one until he was 14 and a half and have got one now who is almost 9, beautiful dogs, lovely natured and your little lady is very pretty – classic Yorkie colouring and eyes! Don't let anyone sway you from what you know to be true! Take care.

Yorkie's come in different sizes. The 12 yr. old yorkie you spoke of is most likely a tea-cup. For a regular size yorkie full grown, they normally weigh 7-10 lbs. I would't worry about it. She is absolutely beautiful! I've always wanted a yorkie!

I think she's a purebred. If you did your research I'm sure the breeder didn't lie. Also, I've bought from champion show breeders that ended up with a dog that was too big or small-this puppy's size doesn't tell you that the breeder is horrible or anything. That's ridiculous. I don't get people on here-make you feel like shit if the dog is too small or too big. She's purebred-just love her, who cares how much she weighs? Sorry for the rant. your puppy is adorable!

I have a yorkie that weighs 6 lbs and one that weighs 9 lbs. I know people that have them as big as 15 lbs. Just becasue they are AKC registered doesn't mean they will be to AKC standards. Yorkies come in all sizes. It depends on the gene pool. People should do their homework when dog shopping. Did you see her parents? She's still a beauty. You just have more yorkie to love. he'll have hold of your heart in no time. Good luck with her.
