Can I Use Baby Barrettes on My Yorkie?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I haven’t had much luck finding yorkie barrettes in canada at a decent price… however baby barrettes are everywhere and cheap!! I can’t use the yorkie elastics as her hair is a bit too short for that yet. I just need something temporary to keep her hair out of her eyes without having to cut it!

we used to use them all the time on our yorkie. they never hurt her and she always left them in her hair. and they’re just as cute!

Yorkie (Puppy/dog) Questions!!?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I am considering purchasing a yorkie. I was wondering if all yorkies end up with the long silky hair or are there different types of yorkies? also, does anyone know how much grooming cost? how about hair cutting for a yorkie? I know i can call the groomers..but i just want some info. if you own a yorkie feel free to tell me about your experience!!

The correct Yorkie coat texture is straight and silky and does not shed. They do not have an undercoat and the "hair" is closest you can get to human hair, requiring similar care.

There are different incorrect coat textures, heavy woolly coats or cottony, harsh coats, terrier coats, etc. These are not acceptable for show Yorkies.

I have added a link that will informs you how to care for a Yorkie with grooming and coat care. Hope it helps.

I Have a 10 Month Old Yorkie Wondering if Hair Should Be Cut Short in Summer?

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

I was wondering if it was a good idea to cut his hair in the summer so he will be cooler but also worried that with shorter hair he will get sun burned skin. Should the hair be left longer?

How hot is it where you live? You should probably keep a small dog like a yorkie indoors. Get him a kennel.

If you do cut his hair, you wont have to worry about a sunburn unless you shave it.

OMG:( I Cut My Yorkie Puppies Hair to Short?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Okay so my puppie yorkie go into something and had mats all over her tummy, I cut way to far up onto her site. I feel so bad, I did it to her. Please how long does it normaly take a 12 week old yorkies hair to grow back
Sorry, my key bored is messed up, so sorry for spelling ^^

Don’t worry about it, dogs don’t care about their appearance. It’s better to have the mats out, just be careful when cutting mats out because you can easily cut their skin.

Please Help!! How Can I Get My Yorkie’s Hair to Grow Back?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Omg. My poor baby was given a birthday hair cut by my little cousin while I was asleep. The cut, as u can imagine, was jacked up. thankfully she only got to do the face and not the whole body. Anyways, I took him to petsmart and asked them to fix it…they shaved my baby’s face:( I’m sooooo sad. I don’t even feel like he’s my dog. But of course I do my best to act normal around my puppy because I know he can sense if I’m acting different around him. He looks like a poodle now. I miss my baby! How long does it take to at least get fluffy again? Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

He just turned a yr old on Saturday. Idk if age makes a difference or not. Please help me!!
Of course I’m happy he didn’t lose an eye or an ear lol y wouldn’t I be? Its just right now the only problem I need help with is the hair. Everything else under control. And my cousin is not a toddler or anything lol she’s 11! I figured she could be left alone with my baby. but it is a horrible lesson learned

Get your yorkie omega 3 fatty acids and drip a little on his food every day. This should help.
If the hair grows back, comb it everyday starting with the short hair. This will stimulate growth. This is not brushing, but combing with a comb.
Also, when you take your dog to the groomer, make sure there are no tangles or mats and you will be able to get the haircut you want.
Good Luck!

How to Do a ‘traditional’ Yorkie Cut?

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

My aunt’s asked whether I could give it a go at cutting her Yorkies as her groomer is OTT expensive and the dogs hate being there. I’ve cut the male’s hair before as her youngest got some kind of sticky sauce stuck in his fur and it came out alright, but I just wondered if there’s somewhere online I could read about how to do it, or if someone here could tell me?
Thankyou (:
Jeez Infinitely Superior, they need clipping because they’re just family pets, not show dogs, and their hair is getting very out of hand due to not being clipped in a while because of money problems with buying new uniforms in September etc. for her two children. I’d also like to get into dog grooming or something similar, so it’s great that she’d let me try and start off with her two yorkies.

There is no traditional cut for the Yorkshire Terrier as it is supposed to have a long coat, an important characteristic of the breed. It takes about as much time to maintain and groom a healthy coat as it does a clipped one. Brush the dog daily.

Our Teacup Yorkie Gets Very Stressed When We Try to Cut Her Hair, Is There a Way to Calm Her Down?

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

we always give her treats afterwards so she doesn’t think we do it because we are mad at her, and we are very gentle when doing it, but bathing her, cutting her nails and hair are all pure torture in her eyes but she needs to be groomed very bad. we bought a "calming" medicine at walmart which didn’t work and the vet. said not to use things like baby benadryl so what other options do we have? all the vet told us was to bring her in and they would do it, but we can’t afford that right now so if anyone has any good tips it would be GREATLY appreciated, like i said she looks rough, she needs to be groomed and once we do it good once than we can do it constantly so its not so hard on her everytime, but how do i do it good the first time around when she won’t stop kicking and freaking out!?!?

She’s not used to being groomed. When groomed out yorkie, the first times were difficult because he hated it. We used a food reward program. Someone distracted him with food and kept his attention with toys while I groomed him. I got him used to the tools first before I started on him. Sometimes unknown sounds can scare dogs which is why you have to introduce the clippers, etc to them before. You could try having her stand up on a towel where you will be grooming her. Have her hold her stance by holding a treat in front of her just for a few minutes. Each time increase the "stance" as I call it. Other times, during the day, when she is calm, handle her body. Start with her feet, gently massaging her toes, gently handle and massage her ears, lift her tail, stroking your hands all over her body, massaging under her eyes with your fingers, massaging in and around the ear opening too. Use soothing words, a happy voice, and treats for these things too. Keep sessions extremely short but frequent. I done this with my yorkie after he was tired from playing. He usually had a "nap" on my lap and this was the perfect time to do it! It helps later in the process of grooming.

I always trim the nails after a bath- the nails are softer then.

My yorkie loved his baths…he got treats in the begining because at first he didn’t like it. She just needs to get used to it. Daily brushing helped keep mats from forming which was easy on grooming part.

He was groomed a bit every day to get used to it.He associated treats with grooming and learned it was a good thing and even after we quit the treats he still behaved on the table for us.

He is kept in a clipped coat which means he needs daily to weekly combing and brushing.

My Yorkie Puppy Is 16 Months Old and His Hair Has Never Been Long and Flowy Like Most Yorkies. Is It Normal?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Here is an actual photo of my Yorkshire Terrier. This is the longes this hair has ever been before cutting it. Are Yorkshire Terriers’ hair usually this short at the age of 16 months?

http://tinypic.com/r/33nyell/6

As you can see, his hair isn’t as flowy and long as most Yorkshire Terriers, but he looks completely full bred and has all of the right characteristics and physical features of a standard Yorkie except for his hair length.

he’s still a puppy but if you bought him as a pet some breeders sell pet quality puppies that just don’t have the proper coat or temperament at a cheaper price if that’s the case you might have bought him as a pet so his coat may have been the reason he was sold as a pet not a show quality puppy I would check with the person you bought him from and ask them why his coat is not long and flowing. that way you will know for sure why it’s not.

Yorkie’s Hair Cut!!?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

I have a female yorkie i would like  to cut her hair short how do u suggest i do that please dont say take her to the groomer i want to do it by myself

The easiest thing to do is to take her to the groomer and then you can maintain the hair cut. I have 3 dogs and have tried grooming them myself, they wind up lopsided and with patches of hair missing, I wind up frustrated and covered in dog hair.

How Old Does a Yorkie Have to Be to Get It’s First Hair-Cut?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Right now my yorkie is some months old.So how old does she have to be to get her first or cut?

2 1/2 or 3 months is a good age I’m glad to hear you’re starting her while she’s a pup it’s really good to desensitize her to grooming from an early age.
