Yorkie Hair Cuts

Yorkie Hair?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I have 2 Yorkies, one has perfect hair, it doesn’t tangle, extremely easy to brush… the other one is 9 months and still has baby fine hair, it seems that if you pet her at all, she mats up. I know that by 9 months, my other one didn’t have such fine hair. Will my baby always have hair like this? She HATES to be brushed and I do what I can to get the mats out, but there are so many and they are too close to her skin to cut off. She has already been shaved once and with it being Winter, I’m not going to have her shaved now. I have a feeling her hair will always be super fine, any tips on how to keep the mats minimal? I attempt to brush her everyday, but as I said she HATES it and I need both hands to work with the mats and when someone else trys to hold her, their hands are in the way of the mats, so that doesn’t help at all. Is there a miracle product to help?

You may just have a dog with a particularly hard-to-groom coat. My Miniature poodle has a very soft coat that tangles if you look at it and it requires a lot of daily grooming and not letting it grow too long. I would suggest having someone help you when you brush her. Just be very gentle and talk softly to her and give her treats to make the grooming process one that she will learn to enjoy rather than to fear. Get someone to help you if you need more hands. There are some detangling products on the market that might help. Either she hasn’t had a coat change yet, or her coat is gong to be that silky texture always. I don’t know about the standards for Yorkie coats, but if there is a shortish cut that you could keep her in, rather than to let the hair grow long and sweeping, that might help. Check around and see if there are any good books on Yorkie Grooming, or consult with a GOOD professional groomer who specializes in Yorkies to see what they might be able to tell you. Good luck!!

Does Anyone Cut Their Dogs Hair Themselves?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

my dog is a yorkie mix with a shih tzu These groomer bills are killing me! I spend more on his hair than I do on my own please help i made an appoiment for tomorrow but idk if to take it or not i was thinking of buying a regular hair cutting machine but i dont know…help asap!

Hey , i’ve also found the groomers to be expensive and simply can’t afford it anymore. so i opted to cut my dogs own hair with a pair of hair cutting scissors (he is a maltese) it took me like 2 hours +.i have shaved his hair once but that didnt realy flatter him.

Then i called an independent dog groomer, the ones who have thos little attachments ot their cars and they come to your house. It cost me about $35 which is about a $20-25 saving. And they dont drug your dog!
I highly reccomend these services, the look them up on true local or hit the directory.

Re: Yorkie Puppy Pooping?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

hi i just asked a question about my yorkie having problems defecating. but no the poop wasn’t stuck in her bottom it was stuck on the fur but she’s got a hair cut today. and to the person who asked what kinds dog food i used i feed her PURINA PUPPY CHOW, healthy life nutrition. but after i noticed the poop sticking to her fur she got a little red around the bottom looks like a tiny rash. Thanks for all the help!

The little red rash may be hemorrhoids if she has been straining and unable to poop due to constipation.

How Do I Cut Yorkie’s Hair?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

My Yorkie’s hair is getting long and I wanted to know some tips on how to cut its hair. I do not want to take it to the groomer, I want to learn to cut his hair myself. I have tried a couple of times, I am having a hard time getting it to not be afraid of the scissors. Any advice?

Are you cutting him short? Like finger length? Or are you just doing a trim on him and still keeping it long? If you’re keeping it long and you have no expierience it might be a good idea to take him to a groomer so his hair stays even. If you want it short then try this. I do mine this way.
First of all, get him exhaust him! Play with him for a long time so he gets really, really tired. When I do mine I give them any kind a bone treat they don’t normally get (Something that lasts awhile). It keeps them entertained so they lie still and should distract him from being scared. He will see it as a good thing because he gets a bone. Put your fingers close to his skin with the hair in between them and cut the hair. Do that all over his body until he is short! It will take a few hours though and you will need to let him have breaks. It would be faster with clippers if the dogs not afraid of them. (one of mine is so I can’t use them on him) It would be a good idea to have someone hold him when you do around his face. Good Luck!

Oh and when you do his tummy area, if you could have someone hold the bone up so that he has to stand while he chews on it, it would be easier for you!

but like obviously it would look older. or do only the silky yorkies hair grow like tht? because i realy want a yorkie but i dont like how it looks when the hair is long…

Yes, we have a Yorkie and we keep his hair short. What you want is called a "Puppy Cut," so take him to a GOOD groomer, who really knows what they’re doing, and ask for a Puppy Cut and that’s what you’ll get.

How Do You Get Yorkie Puppies Hair to Grow Back After a Bad Hair Cut?

Monday, August 24th, 2009

I read on the internet if you rub them down with turkey whiskey and cat feces it will grow back in 3 days. Is this true?

You just wait for it to grow back and make sure that she is on a very high quality food – this will help it grow back quicker and better. The turkey, whiskey, and cat feces is a myth. Not true.

We shaved all of our dogs this weekend (including our Yorkies which look so cute with there hair cut by the way) You need a good pair of clippers, the wal mart cheap ones, don’t work our were $167 and they work great!!

Which Blade to Cut Yorkie Hair From Ears?

Monday, August 17th, 2009

What number blade do I need to buy to be able to cut the tip of my Yorkie’s ears?

Above poster… sorry but unless you are very experienced never use a #40 blade!
It can cause dreadful clipper rash, not to mention cutting the dogs skin if you do not know what you are doing. #40 is surgical, no hair at all and can be dangerous, my white boy gets a horrible rash after using one and he is done every few weeks… I had to switch to a #30 blade, not as smooth but it stopped the rashing.

If you have not clipped the ears before then I would ask a local groomer or vet to show you how to do it.
Start out with a longer blade like a #10 and as your dog gets used to it and you get more experienced you can progress to shorter blades.

Is It Cruel to Keep Your Dog's Hair in a Puppy Cut?

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

My fiance and I have been researching dogs for sometime and a lot of the dogs we love have long hair (Yorkie, Havanese, Maltese, Bichon). Is it cruel to maintain their hair in a permanent puppy cut?

I don't think so at all. I believe most of those breeds over time developed the beautiful hair they are known for now for showing purposes through breeding. If anything I believe the puppy cut is not only easier on you but more comfortable for the dog. (No food stuck in fur, no knots, matts, poking her in they eyes).
