Doggie Diet?

I have a Maltese/Yorkie mix. He'll be a year old on June 1st. Maybe it is because his hair is growing back from his haircut, or because he's growing, but he's gaining weight. What are some healthy things I can feed him to make sure he's healthy? I heard vegetables are good for them. Are they really?

don't feed any junk treats from pet shops, reseach whats in the treats, and only when your sure give the treats

My 2 love Baby carrots,I slice them and they have as treats

maybe he looks fuller cause of his fur, when you take him a bath, you'll see just how tone he is and not fat,my maltese look puggy, but when they are wet, look like big rats,lol..all muscle…

By a year old for small breeds, they really should not be gaining any more significant weight. Their growth period is coming to an end by 1 year old.

Feed your dog its regular dog food as according to the manufacturer's instructions (I would say feed him a quality affordable brand like canidae). Measure the food so you know exactly how much he is getting. If he still continues to gain weight, stop feeding him any sort of doggy treats and feed him vegetables during treat time. You can make it more appetizing by adding a dab of peanut butter. Exercise him regularly, and cut back a little on the regular kibble if he continues to gain.

Vegetables are fine for dogs, but you should look up a list of vegetables NOT to feed your dog. Some are poisonous to dogs like onions and eggplant.

Yes veggies are VERY good for him. Some of the dog food manufacturers have realized this like Beneful and have offered food with veggies…give them a piece of broccoli every day, apples, carrots…DO NOT FEED THEM eggplant, mushrooms, avocados and chocloate, those are poison to a dogs system. There was a cat that was 24 and counting and the guy swore it was because he had a piece of broccoli every day, I don't doubt it!!! Good luck with your baby.

We give our fat lab a mix of lamb and rice and the wet canned lamb and rice (In case you don't know, we don't buy lamb meat and chop it up. We go to the pet store and it's in a light brownish bag.). This has helped us so much! I have no clue if this is ok for small dogs.

Stay away from table food. Do some research on quality dog foods, i.e. Canidae or Innova. These foods are made from natural products, no corn meal, or other additive crap that can cause serious health problems. We made the mistake of thinking all dog foods were created equal, until we lost our 6-yo maltese to leukemia, that we later learned could have possibly come from more popular dog foods that are out on the market, i.e. Beneful. Read the labels on the bags, if corn (in any form) is in the top 5 or 6 ingredients, stay away from it. This is only a filler - and think about it… how well do humans digest corn? Same goes for dogs - they don't. It is pure crap. Unfortunately, there is no food and drug administration looking out for what goes into our precious pet's food.
