my yorkie is nearly 5 months and i want to get her spayed, the vet said it must be after 6 months, so should i get her done before she goes on heat or after. i have never had a bitch before only dogs so would like any opinions, or doesn't it really matter to her. Also shes going for a haircut on thursday as its very hot in London at the moment, what kinds of cuts look good on a yorkie, thankyou
I personally would say to a Responsible dog owner who was absolutely sure they would not allow their b*tch to get accidentally mated at the first heat, and I feel you are a responsible owner, that it is better to wait until after the first heat when you b*tch is fully mature. 6 weeks after the first heat is usually a good time.

See the link below for information regarding spaying and hope this helps. (I am also in the UK).
As regards the trim, most Yorkies have a "puppy trim" which is easy to care for and makes them look really cute.
OOOPS, sorry posted wrong link, now corrected.

you sound like paris hilton

Before she goes in to heat, because even letting a dog go in heat once puts the dog at a risk for cervical and/or ovarian issues.
Just give her a trim, the Yorkie can handle the heat just fine as long as she has access to water.

You should get her spayed when your vet says she can be spayed.

get her spayed its best for her as she could get cancer
get a pretty and short hair cut

I think you might want to get a second opinion cause your dog is defiantly old enough to get spayed. If you wait till she has had a heat cycle she is at greater risk for cervical cancer and brest cancer. Her reproductive organs will be more developed if she goes through heat which will cause more chance of bleeding and a possible longer healing time. I think lion clips are great for the summer months.

So many differing views on this. I was all set to get my Whippet done before her first season. Before my vet persuaded me to let her have one season (bone development issues and to reduce the likelihood of spay incontinence). I've only ever spayed my ex-broods previously, and they were obviously over 5 by then. I started checking up on the pros and cons of early, pre-season spaying and there are definitely issues with doing this, as there are with letting a b itch have even only one season first.
I guess it's down to how you feel about the 'risks', and also not least, your ability to properly confine/deal with her when she is in season!
I'm delaying mine, but she's now just over 8 months, and still no sign of a season……. and with every passing month, I'm more inclined to go back to my original thinking – and avoid having to kennel her (boarding) because when she does come in, I have a 12 year old Basset who doesn't need the stress of living with her in season!!
As for cuts on Yorkies – no idea, but even if it's hot outside, don't strip her out as a coat acts as insulation against the heat, as much as against the cold. Most good groomers will be able to advise you, and show you pictures?

You should be able to spay her now. Waiting until the first heat increases the likelihood of pregnancy and breast cancer.
