How Can I Get My Dogs Hair to Grow Out Nice and Long?

I just got my dogs haircut and I had it done all even, it was basically all cut off, now I want his hair to grow a lot more fuller, thicker, more shiny. He’s a yorkie and his hair was thinning, I took him to the vet and they said he is okay. He’s eating good, he’s on Blue Buffalo and I got some Lineatone which I suppose to give him once a day to help. Do any body know any other suggestions? I really want his hair to be longer, I love dogs with long coats.

Genes and great diet are your best friends for a gorgeous coat. Don’t forget though that those show dog Yorkies you see on TV, their coats take a tremendous amount of maintenance and special grooming. Most pet dogs will not look like that! :) Blue Buffalo is a good food but if he just doesn’t seem to be thriving on it then pick another high quality food, maybe a different brand or different protein sources will click better with his system. Just because its a fancy-schmancy food doesn’t mean it is necessarily right for his particular needs.

Do a little research on grooming for yorkies. I don’t know the breed to be able to give you specific instructions on the right products and techniques for his coat, but the show dog breeders would know.

Here’s are a few sites to get you started:

There is a huge genetic element to it and you can’t change his genes. If his parents weren’t champions, he is not very likely to have a coat like show dogs do. When he grows out, use good quality grooming products appropriate to the breed. I like Plush Puppy products a lot. I’ve had good luck w/ my dogs feeding Innova and supplement with Solid Gold Sea Meal or Nupro.

A dog will not grow more hair than it has the genes for.

Brush daily and never brush dry.

I use a bristle brush on my crested and a bottle of spray on-leave in conditioner.

Just give a light spray with the leave in conditioner and brush all through the coat.
You never want to brush the hair dry as it can cause a lot of breakage and frizzy ends.

Adding oils to the diet also helps keep skin and coat healthy.
I feed just a tin of sardines in oil once or twice a week to keep mines coats shiny, you can buy expensive fish oil tablets but really, just cheap sardines in oil does the same thing.

Good answers already above, in addition, add a nice ‘leave in’ conditioner to keep hair from breaking.
