is petsmart grooming good for a yorkie???

this is the very first time my puppy's going to get groomed. he's 6 months right now and his coat is getting pretty longer after we first got him. so, my mom and i were thinking maybe it would be a good idea to take our dog to get pampered and groomed at petsmart or petco, so i researched a little bit. guess what? i found TERRIBLE reviews on personally experienced customers. one of the ladies took her puppy to petsmart for a haircut and when she returned to get her puppy from petsmart, everything was fine until she got home. she found a HUGE cut on the dog's neck and it was covered with a bandana and the groomer didnt tell her. with petco, some story about some groomer dropping a dog and breaking its leg causing 4,000 dollars of damage scared me. i don't know what to do. i need my dog to get groomed and reading these reviews worry me. i was thinking about going to petsmart & petco myself and ask questions and check it out.
what also makes me wonder is…everytime i go to petsmart, i see only the dogs no owners. why is it so? why do the groomers make the owners go home and make the dogs stay? i don't get it. someone who worked at petsmart as a groomer for 3 years told me because it would be uncomfortable for the dog. i dont get how. i think i would want to stay by my dog's side while he gets his haircut, would that be a problem? everyone says petsmart is dangerous and my brain is telling me i should check it out first…what do you guys think?

So why dont you just check out a dog grooming office in your town. There are dog groomers out there that dont belong to petsmart.

I just honestly dont see what the big dillema is here. Just go somewhere else if you dont trust them.

Ask friends and neighbors which groomer they use for their dog.
Ask if they like the groomer and if they have any complaints. If the groomer does a good job and treats the animals right that is what matters most.
Personally if they have bad reviews then do not take your dog there. You don't want your dog to have a bad experience getting groomed.

I wouldn't take my dog there if it has gotten bad reviews.

If you don't trust these companies with your pet why not try an independent groomer? Ask around, friends and family or even someone you see that has a dog.

I don't know about Petsmart in particular, but I think a good groomer should allow you to stay and observe for your first visit to see how your dog takes their handling. If they won't let you stay and watch, I would go somewhere else if it were me. Petsmart is a HUGE chain though, so I guess there have to be some bad stories out there just due to volume of employees and be no reason to blame each store for a few bad apples.

unfortunately your dog is over 5 months, petsmart only charge $10 for pups 5 months and younger - bath, nails, and ears - good deal. They make the owners go home because they don't do the appointment right away - most likely the dog will have to wait a bit inside a kennel. Another reason is if you are there watching and all anxious your dog will become all fidgetting trying to come to you. Then you will be all scared that they are hurting your dog. You can see them grooming other dogs throught he window - which should give you a pretty good idea they're not being tortured. I've never heard of any weird stories about petsmart, i take all my dogs there and they love it. I drop them off and when i pick them up - i go ito the store and buy them some treats first - so when i pick them up they get treats too.

I would NEVER take my Poodle anyplace like that to be groomed. I learned to do her myself and we are all MUCH happier and she looks great!!! Not to mention the money that we are saving!! I would bet that you can learn to do a Yorkie yourself. Look for resources online and for Yorkie groups or Yorkie grooming groups on Yahoo. Also look for books on the subejct. Yorkies DO fall in to the category of "dogs that need grooming" on a frequent and regular basis. You should probably be brushing this baby out every single day. If you'll do just that and do regular baths, you will be way ahead of the game. You may have to make an initial investment in some equipment, but it will more than pay for itself on the long run. Good Luck!!

Call your vet and ask their personal recomendations.
Owner can't stay at most groomers because of insurance purposes….I have several dogs that I am grooming at once in my shop and an owner could be bitten by one, or slip on the wet floor. The major reason that owners aren't allowed to stay is because they are anxious about their pets, the pets sense this and become much more uneasy.
When you drop off your dog, be cool, calm and collected…your pet will know this and you being the leader, it will take cue from you. When I do new untrained pups I usually only have the pup there. I want it in and out as quickly as possible, so that it isn't crated for any length of time thus creating less stress on the animal….Then when the owner comes back I give a short lesson on brushing, combing and bathing, so that it isn't tangled in between. Tangles create stress on the dog also.

It is not the place you should be worrying about but rather the experience/expertise of the individual groomer. Ask around - your vet may be able to recommend someone or other dog owners. Good luck in finding someone you and your dog are comfortable with!

Petsmart and Petco hire inexperienced people. They don't pay well, so they don't get the best employees. Of course there are exceptions, but I would not take my dog to be groomed at either of these chains.
Ask friends, relatives, neighbors for recommendations. It's very important your puppy have a good first experience being groomed.
And, it's not unusual for the owners to leave the dogs and go home or go to work and come back later to pick up the dog. However, if you want to wait, you should be allowed to wait there. Probably not in the grooming area, but in a waiting room where you can look in and see what is going on.
I too, have heard many horror stories about grooming shops, not just Petco and Petsmart…so be careful.

My personal experience with Petsmart has not been good at all. I left our german shepard mix to be groomed and when I picked him up, there was a woman standing at the window watching and told me that they had been very mean to him and when I got him home he had a cut underneath his bandana. I now take him and our yorkie to a private groomer that was I was told about by family members and love it.

I have a yorkie and a poodle. I take them both to petsmart. I had heard some horror stories too, but one day, i went to petsmart, watched the groomers for a little while, and picked the one who i thought did the best job. they are reasonably priced, and convenient. One thing, when you drop your dog off, be specific to what you want so you dont come back surprised. If you want low maintenance, get a puppy cut, if you like the length, just make sure to tell them that. petsmart requires a copy of their rabbies vaccine so be prepared to have that with you. Its better to drop them off, you dont want to make the groomer, or your dog nervous. The cuts you mentioned can happen no matter who does the grooming. Your dog could jump, squirm, etc. Things happen, but mostly its an enjoyable experience for the dog. Mine always leave so happy! (but they always need to go # 2 right after) So be prepared. GOOD LUCK!!!
