I have a small Yorkie, and we take him for haircuts regularly at the same place. Yesterday he came back with blood on him. His right ear was bleeding quite a bit and had a small part missing. The top of his head had some blood on it, that wasn’t from his ear. His back left leg has a small, deep wound that is causing him to limp, it also has a small (around 1cm) piece of skin hanging off. We took him back into the groomers and she said she was sorry she must’ve cut him with the razor and gave him a squeaky toy. Since he has been back he had lay around and licked his wounds, and his right front paw. We will be taking him to the vets tomorrow, but is there anyway I could take this further with the groomers?
TAKE PICTURES, keep the receipts, vet records etc. This was obviously done by your groomers. I don’t care if it was a new groomer or an accident they should have contacted you and explained what happened. This could of caused your dog to have greater problems if it went unnoticed, the place that groomed your dog will most likely have to pay for any injuries or vet bills sustained! Hope your baby feels better
I’m also adding on this to the people that said it’s your dog.. A groomer is trained to make grooming a pleasant experience. A professional would tell you that you dog needed extra time to feel comfortable and if he or she didn’t feel comfortable or capable of handling the dog then they should ask for help or tell you. Even if this was the case the groomer DID NOT TELL YOU that your dog was injured, that pretty much just says it all. No matter what the reason is for an injury that person obviously didn’t have your pets best interest at heart.

YOU need to SPEAK with THAT groomer Immediately…!!
Your dog shouldn’t be bleeding and scratched up after a grooming.

yes get a detailed report of the dogs injuries and a copy of the charges from the Vet and submit them to the groomer for reimbursement. If she doesnt pay you can sue her.

my dog got cut, groomer tried to hide it with bandana and by brushing fur over it, found it before leaving and the grooming salon had to pay BIG time.
Yes, you did the right thing by contacting the groomer and showing her what she did. Next take her to the vet. Have a written report done by the vet, take pictures, get a copy of the vet bill also.
I would look In the yellow pages, for attorneys and free phone consults. If they tell you that in your state you could take her to court I would. You need not hire a attorney go file small claims. The court gives you instruction on how to do that.
I would ask for the cost of grooming, vet bills, court costs, and a minor amount for the inconvenience.
I believe some people need a wake up call. That poor dog, and you can see this groomer has forgot shes working on animals not a factory assembly line.
I would put her squeak toy up her you know what.

if i were you i would take the people to court and get them to pay for the vet fees

That is awful. I would find a new groomer ASAP. If a dog is matted it is common to sometimes get small burns or irritation. But anyone who would cut pieces out or ‘parts hanging down’ or something deep enough to make him limp needs to not be a groomer. Also, the fact that the groomer did not notify you of the injuries (any tiny little nick) is just wrong. The reality is, sometimes they get a small nick or two. It can happen if the dog moves the wrong way at the wrong time. But the groomer has an obligation to let you know up front if there are any issues. If this is as bad as you are saying, this is a very poor groomer, or she let a beginner work on your dog and isn’t telling you. Either way, get a new groomer and be forwarned, your dog may have some fear of the next groomer. Make sure and let the new groomer know what happened this time so they can be extra gentle and careful just in case he has a problem.
I don’t know if there is anything else to be done. If it is serious enough you may be able to get the vet bills if it costs anything more that an office visit to check it out. Definitely if any of the wounds require any sort of treatment.

You need to file (if you are under 18 then your parents) a report with the B.B.B. That groomer shouldn’t be grooming if she can’t properly do it. You also need to make sure that this hasn’t happened to anyone else. YOU need to CONTACT her and TELL her you won’t be back. Not to mention you NEED to file with your local BBB.

We’ve had a similar problem with one of our dogs. When he came home, he was cuts all over him. One of them got infected, so we had to take him to the vet. As you know, that isn’t cheap. We went back to the groomers and asked for our money back. She gave it to us and it was enough to pay the vet bill. I would ask for your money back. If you threaten to let it get out, I’m sure you can get your money.

One of the main reasons dogs come home like that is because they do not behave during the grooming process. They jump, turn, put their paws on your hands, twist, nip, & are general just uncooperative during the whole process. The dogs are usually untrained & do not know their commands. Some don’t even seem to know what "NO" means. They are a groomers nightmare.
Have you ever stayed with your dog to see how he does with the groomer? Is he untrained & doesn’t know the commands? Most people want to believe that their dogs are good during this process but I know different. I was a groomer for 15 + years. I specialized in behavioral problems & did hundreds of dogs like that.
Then there is the dog that will sit & hand you a paw when it is time to work on the feet. They know the process & anticipate the next part of the groom.
Talk to the groomer the next time you take him in & ask if you can stay & watch. Try to stay out of site or the dog will want you to rescue it. Go away as you usually do so he won’t suspect you are any where near. Then sneak back & stay where you can’t be seen.
I am willing to bet it is your dog & not the groomer. You wouldn’t believe what a groomer has to go through & you will find out if you can watch.

Yes. Call and ask them to cover your vet bills. If they refuse, you can take them to small claims court for the amount of the bills. Under the law most places dogs are considered property, so they damaged your property, they have to pay for those damages. You won’t get more than the vet bill cost as that’s generally all the law allows for, but you should easily be able to recover those. Make sure the vet writes up in their notes their opinion of what caused the wounds and that they are consistent with cuts from clippers or scissors or whatever they think.

That is despicable. I can’t believe they did this to your poor little boy! I wouldn’t blame you for being upset about this. The injuries you listed are serious. Missing part of his ear? That just feeds oxygen to my angry flame!
My greatest suggestion to you is to NEVER go back to that groomer. Also, if you don’t want to go into suing and and all of the paperwork and money and a lawyer, simply advise all the people you possibly can to never return to that grooming place.
I would ask your Yorkie’s vet about that issue and see what he or she says about it. If these wounds were an accident, then clearly these people never went to school for the specific job, and the grooming facility hires non-professional groomers because it’s much cheaper. If these are pros, I’d DEFINATELY send them back to elementary school! Gashes in your dogs leg, part of his ear missing, etc?
In case they didn’t know, the ear incident could be considered CROPPING of the dog’s ear with SCISSORS, which is what MANY people get ARRESTED for on Animal Planet’s TV programs!
Now that I think about it, if I was in your position, I would DEFINATELY take up court for this. Those wounds aren’t going to heal themselves! But rather than taking revenge on those jerks that call themselves groomers, you should also focus mostly on your dog’s well-being. Let him rest in a comfortable area, not in a place where many people walk by in your home, and get him a water bowl. Feed him with his regular schedule for feeding. Also, I’d suggest a damp facecloth over his wounds.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT PUT ANY HUMAN HEALTH PRODUCTS ON OR INTO YOUR DOG
Antibiotic ointment for infection could easily burn his skin and cause even greater pain. If your vet has given you any first aid kits for your dog in the past, use those. They are definately trustworthy.
Get vet advice right away if anything.
Hope this helps!

Myself
Bluebonnet is correct in saying that most dogs who get cut up during the process get cut because of their behavior (twisting, squirming, trying to bite the groomer, etc.).
HOWEVER, a smart groomer would have just stopped the groom and handed the dog back to you half-finished and asked you to refrain from bringing him back until he was taught to behave. I have personally witnessed groomers absolutely lose it on misbehaving dogs-I saw one b! tch slap a dog so hard it flew off the table and 10 feet across the room (and YES, I unloaded on her-I was actually dropping my dog off for an appointment when I saw that, and for 10 years after that, I groomed my dogs myself). It’s quite possible that the groomer just didn’t care if the dog got cut.
Accidents DO happen, but with something like you describe (which is complete negligence), I would contact the shop’s owner with photos and a veterinarian’s report and insist that they pay the bill. The grooming shop should have taken the dog immediately to the vet when it happened, not try to send him home with you and hope you didn’t notice. If they refuse to pay the bill, contact their liability insurance company to file a claim (let them know you plan to do this, and they will probably change their mind). You can probably get this information from contacting your state’s licensing authority (your vet may know how to find out who their insurer is, if you can’t get it anywhere else, talk to your state’s attorney general’s office for direction on where to go).
