My dog's toenails are too long?
Someone gave me a little dog, he is half yorkie, I believe. They did not take very good care of the dog. I had to get so many fleas off of him, and gave him a haircut. And his two front paws have extremely long toenails, like they are growing sideways and making his little toes grow sideways as well. Is there any way to make them shorter. I know you can only clip dog nails to the quick, or it will hurt them, and I don't want to do that. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks in advance.
You can try one of those nail grinders, you will have an easier time getting closer to the quick. You could also send him to the groomer, they specialize in this kind of stuff.
Good for you for giving him a good home and taking proper care of him!

I would take him to a professional groomer and have them clip his nails. If you don't know what you're doing <—like me, then I would let someone else do it. Better safe than sorry!

Yes you can only cut the dead part of the nail, that doesn't have the quick/pink part. If you cut the quick, it's painful for the dog.
I believe if you keep the nail trimmed right against the quick, it'll slowly recede back, but this will take time and persistence. Personally claw cutting makes me nervous so i'm a fan of using groomers for that task.
If your dog needs to have surgery of any kind, the vets can cut the dogs claws back to a normal length while he's asleep. He will still have sore toes when he wakes up, but at least his claws woudln't be interfering with his toes/walking etc!

I agree you should let someone else do it, esp. since they're so bad. It's probably going to hurt even if you don't cut the quick, so a professional would be better at handling the dog.

might be easier to take him to groomer and have nails ground down……its gentler than clipping……nails growing sideways definitely would cause some foot pain I would think. Perhaps there is a reason they didnt cut nails, maybe he doesn't like it much…..maybe bites or screams…..

Sometimes a vet will clip them once for free. I think the Quick might even receed after a while and return to normal. I think you could buy some really nice clippers anywhere, but you have to stay calm when you clip them as you could make the dog nervous. my husband tried one of those grinder things, and the sound made the dog crazy. He still used it.

Clip to quick and then try filing them once a week. If his toes or even the nail is turned, that can cause serious deformities and then later problems with walking. another good way to keep their nails down is walks on side walks. the concrete helps to gradual wear the nail down. Invest in a jar of QUIK STOP incase you clip them back too far and they bleed. If you cant get quik stop, use flour or powered sugar. The gluten will help stop bleeding. This will take time to get those nails back where they belong.

clipping your dogs toenails will not hurt your dog, only if you get to close. it's the best thing you can do for your dog. you can also file it down or take him to the vet and have them do it. poor baby! i am so glad to hear you are taking better care of him than his previous owners.

I would take the little guy to a groomer for this first time, since they are so extremely long. i dont know if you still have flea troubles, but i swear by a capstar, and then a dose of frontline plus, for my 2 shih tzus.works wonders. and you might want to give him a capstar before going to the groomer (get it from your vet, its $3 a dose here) it will kill ALL fleas and ticks on the dog within an hour.

You should either take him to a vet, or a groomer. You can also take him to PetsMart, they groom dogs and will also clip their nails, I have found they are a little less expensive then groomers or vets. They can also show you what you would need and tell you how to do it yourself if you would prefer to do that.

go to the groomer!! and vaccination helps the dog to be much more healthy , prone to those ticks. pls check if he has disease too. and anyway who the hell u take this dog from. wat a bad owner! and dogs nails are able to trim shorter to an extend if u trim it regularly. i did the grooming to my shih tzu myself most of the time. and do get deworn for ur yoskshie as well for just in case of wat junk they fed it.

Cut them back to the quick, then do it frequently (once or twice a week) just taking off a bit at a time.
If your dog has to be put under at the vet's for any reason, ask them to whack the nails right back while he's unconscious.

Clip them just a little bit at a time so you don't cut into the quick.
