So I found a dog and have had him for a couple days?
I think he is yorkie mix, he's tan and has semi-long hair. We also have 9 other dogs who are short haired chihuahuas. Today I was brushing my new dog "Remmy" and I found what looked like a wart, So I started moving the hair to examine and found that it was a tick, a brown tick, so I pinched the tick off (yes head and all) and killed the tick before rinsing it down the drain. Immediatly afterwards I soaked Remmy in flea, tick and mosquito dip then gave him a good shampooing, dried him off and brushed him again. My question is…how do I prevent him from getting ticks? A haircut maybe (since none of our other dogs have ever had ticks-out of 4 years) Maybe a flea and tick collar? if so which one?
Yes I have put an ad in my local newspaper that I found him, as well as put signs up in the area I found him in and at the spca so I can find his owner but until then I plan on taking care of him, I have already scheduled to have him groomed.
If he was a stray then I would say just getting him on a good product like Advantage or Frontline will take care of any tick or flea problems. I would get Remmy on that straight away. Ticks easily go from Remmy to your other dogs. Next thing you know you are going to have to treat the other 9.
The over the counter flea/tick shampoos do not work very well in my experience. I took my dog on vacation with me to Iowa last year. We were away from home for almost 3 weeks and I noticed the 2nd week he had gotten fleas. I had never had any of my dogs have fleas before so I was bathing him often while on vacation with over the counter flea shampoo and literally an hour or 2 after bathing him I would see fleas. When I got home I went straight to the vet and got him on Advantage. I didn't see any more fleas and my other 2 dogs that I had stay with other people did not get them.
Hope this helps.. Good luck

Get tick and flea medicine to put on him from the vet. and make sure the dog doesn't belong to anyone else before you keep him.

Frontline plus works great. I've never found the collars effective myself. For future reference ticks can survive in water for a long time…you should really kill them with rubbing alcohol or something instead.

keeping him out of the outdoors too much (dense foliage esp.) will help mostly. cutting the hair will help you find / prevent bites. collars help to some extent too.

Have you reported finding him to any of the relevant Agencies and had him checked to see if he is micro-chipped?

Bring him to the vet.

using anti-flea/tick shampoo and soap everytime ur dog takes a bath would really help.

front line is the best. if your yard is fenced an the other dog never get them remmy should be fine.

there are many different flea&tick repellents on the market..flea collars are ok,but because they are around the dogs neck thier not very good at protecting the whole dog.and can be iretating.since all the chemical is consentrated in one area.ihave used a product called (front line ) on my dog and i,m very happy with the results.it last longer then the others i have tried and wont wash of even after bathing, you can find it at all pet supply store,s good luck with your new friend,

Vet tech and personal exp with the nasty fleas.. not fun
yes the best thing is to get him groomed and to get some kind of tick and flea killer for the dog, the best flea and tick killers are from the vets as their the strongest , then you might want to get a flea and tick collar to be sure. also you will need to check you other 9 dogs as they might have caught the ticks aswell. they all may need doing.

Good Luck X Hope this is best answer X
If I was you… I'll bring the dog to the vet for a check-up if nobody ask for the dog.. as well if you contact them, they might know if somebody lost his dog. For the tick.. dogs with longer have them all the time.. you shouldn't worry too much.. but put a special collar against tick around the neck to prevent it… as you have other dog, I'll really go to see a vet, to make sure he has no other sickness.. Take care of him and give him a lot of love..
