Yorkie Haircut? Help!?
I want to start cutting my Yorkies hair, because the last 2 times I have taken them to the groomers she butchered them! She has had alot of dogs her lately, on top of being a shelter. So I just think she rushes. I am interested in doing it myself. I can't find a great website that explains it to very fine detail. I've checked around on a lot of sites… Any ideas?
I've worked with Show Steers before clipping hair. I won't butcher them. Not to mention I groom my parents dogs. I'm just not sure about the Yorkie cut, I like the round face cut… Thats mainly the part I need help with, the head.
Another groomer isn't an option. Where I am at now, the options are to be on a waiting list to get into a groomer that isn't taking new dogs. Or I can go to petsmart, and they are very expensive, and careless (from a friends experience)… They are my babies…

I have all of the tools to groom the dogs.. I already groom my parents dogs at home.
Cut hair just so that it does not touch the table top. With feet on table trim around them so that they appear round. Gether up the hair on top of head and make pony tail. Trim face to the length you want it to be. Some people like the hair long and some want it short. It should be cut even straight across. Cut it short if you want to avoid the mess that is caused by eating. Some people like to shave the back side of the ears clean and some like it to hang with the other hair. Some people like to do terrier cut.
There is far more to grooming a dog than can be explained on this site. Some of the other answers to your question suggest a website or a book.
A Yorkie is not hard to groom if you know what you are doing. I have had clients bring me the results of what they attemped to do. Most of it was fixable but people just don't know all that goes into it.
I have encourged clients to stay while I groomed their dog and for the most part they are amazed at what all in done. Do yourself favor and just trim what is really bothering you and wait to get to a groomer.
Don't take him to a groomer that has little time to do things carefully and right. This is one thing that will make a dog fear a groomer. and ask if you can stay with. If they won't let you stay walk out the door and find another one.

you can't cut it very short because the longness helps keep it warm whan it is cold

Try your library or look up a phonebook for a new groomer. If you want to do it yourself you may need to buy grooming equipment. There might be somewhere near you which runs a course on it, or you could try asking your dogs breeder.

On amazon.com you can get a book called "How to Groom a Yorkshire Terrier Perfectly: A Step by Step Illustrated Guide for Grooming Your Yorkshire Terrier (Spiral-bound)" by Tammy Sprinkle.
you might want to look into getting it.

My wife is a groomer, and she is very good at doing Yorkies….she is considered the best in her area at doing the teddy bear look on them. It is NOT easy, I do not recommend anyone trying to groom their dog themselves. Yorkies have that fine silky hair, and it takes time and practice, as well as a good teacher, to learn how to do that. Learning online is not something that I would recommend. You CAN'T learn from just a book or an online step-by-step….you need to learn scissoring techniques and how to make sure the dog doesn't get cut. Leave it to a professional.

i would recommend finding a new groomer but if u really want to do it yourself just no that a lot of times the round face look is really hard to get it depends on the kind of fur they have

I take my yorkie to a groomer and I just request the hair around his face to be a little long. And the fringe at the bottom to be a little short. I don't want it dragging the ground. The rest of the body is cut kinda short. I guess you could say he kinda has a schnauzer look to him. But he looks really cute, like a bear. And you don't have to worry about brushing him everyday. Its a lot easier to take care of.
