First, consider how much money you have to spend on keeping a dog. It costs over $1000 per year to keep your dog fed, keep up on vet care, and the first year it costs more because you have to have your dog spayed, get all the sets of puppy shots, and buy one time things like crates, leashes, collars. You will spend at least $1000 in the first 4 months of owning the dog. Then, if you have emergency trips to the vet you will have to spend tons of money just to keep your dog alive. If you can't afford all of this, then don't get a dog.
If you can afford all of this, $2000 in the first year of your dogs life plus purchase cost, and $1000 every year after, then look for a rescue organization in your area. akc.org has links to rescue and breed clubs (most breed clubs also run a rescue). Alternatly, check local shelters.
