I would like to find a well bred yorkie puppy. I would like the price to be $1000 or less (why do they have to be so expensive, its a friend!). All I want is a happy yorkie who is healthy and follows the standards written by the akc (which all dogs should fit in to). Please help me find reputable breeders no more then 3 hours from NYC. Thanks!

Here’s a list of NY yorkie breeders that are affiliated with the AKC and their national breed club. http://www.ytca.org/frame_index2.html
Pups are that expensive when you buy them from reputable breeders to help cover the cost of medical screenings on the parents, vaccinations, tail docking, vet exams, attaining CH titles to prove they conform to the breed standard both structurally and temperament, and the time the breeders put into training both their adult dogs and the new pup that you will be buying. We consider ourselves very lucky if we break even on a litter even with pups at $1000 each. Good luck!

Finally, someone who comes on here asking for REPUTABLE breeders. Kudos to you!
Stay away from the breeders who advertise their dogs as "teacups" or "pockets" or any other cutesy name. They should simply sell "Yorkshire Terriers" or "Yorkies". Anyone who says differently is simply trying to scam you by selling an unhealthy dog with a fancy name.
The reason for the high price on a well bred dog is because of all the health testing breeders do to make sure their pups are free of genetic diseases. They also feed high quality food and make sure their pups get their first shots and vet check ups, etc. It’s expensive to breed reputably, so expect the price to be high, but know it’s worth it. You won’t have to worry about a dog having a bad temperament and the chances of a sickly dog decreases dramatically. But keep in mind that a high price does not always dictate high quality.
Here’s a page to help you find a good breeder in your area. Please consider adopting a purebred Yorkie from a rescue as well.

I would suggest you check out YTCA.org for a list of recommended breeders. As the parent club for the breed, they have strict guidelines that the recommended breeders have to follow…think of it as a pre-screening process.
Also, you may want to attend some local conformation shows to meet breeders, or some local handling classes.
