Yorkie puppies and food.?
I have 2 yorkie puppies and I am wondering when I should start offering them food and water. Also, should I start with hard or soft food?
When we breed our boston terrier we start to offer water around 4 weeks of age. If they don't take it start by adding a little puppy formula to the water and slowly fade it out. We offer food around 6 weeks. As for food use hard food. The best way to do this is to put it in a food chopper with some water added and chop it up. This makes it softer and easier for them to chew. We don't use can food b/c it gives them diarrhea and is harder for them to digest. Also don't give them too much b/c puppies don't know when to stop or when they are full.

Lovely choice of pup, adorable aren't they?! I've got one myself and had another yorkie for 14 years until he passed over and would recommend that you give them soft, tinned puppy food mashed with a very small amount ( 2 tablespoons ) of warm milk. They find this mix easier to eat off the dish and its kinder to their little stomachs! Gradually reduce the milk until its just the puppy food - keep them on this for a while as its full of nutrients and vitamins - vital to a puppy's growth and health. Once they get fed up with puppy food and start nibbling biscuits etc then change them to normal dog food but mash it well with a fork. Offer them whole, fresh carrots - mine adore them and they're very good for teething as well as their skin and coats! Give them hard biscuits such as gravy bones or Bonio 2 / 3 times per day as they need roughage for their bowels - they won't necessarily eat them but they do like to have their 'bits' laying about if they get hungry later on - i've adopted this practise all my adult years and have never had a 'begging' dog or a 'bin-raider'! Feed them when they are hungry and always leave out a big bowl of fresh, clean water. Best of luck to you all, i'm very jealous ha ha.
