Is it true they are delivered caesarian only? I've seen a few breeders’ websites mentioning the pups are normally delivered via c-section. And that seems odd to me. Isn't that a sign of poor breeding or someone trying to force a dog to breed in a way they shouldn't, IE the dog is unnaturally tiny and therefore unable to deliver in a normal way. Also is it true that it's hard to acquire a female puppy? Have puppy mills almost ruined this breed? All info is appreciated because I want to be an informed and responsible yorkie owner and get a healthy sound dog. Thanks!
You should visit the website www.akc.org
It is the American Kennel Club website, and should have links to breeders' websites.
There are several breeds that are artificially inseminated and delievered via c-section. Breeds like bull mastiffs and bulldogs are a couple of those breeds. There is nothing wrong with it, and in fact, is a better way too whelp puppies. It has something to do with the breed and it's dificulty giving birth.
Responsible breeders tend to discontinue breeding lines where there are genetic defects. Breeders that are associated with the AKC are more reputable and responsible.
ANybody can mate two dogs and call themself a breeder, but you don't want to go that route. Do your homework, and talk to several breeders.

The best way to get a better, healthy dog is buy from a breeder in the breeds club – find this at http://www.akc.org. Deal with a breeder that tests & certifies their breeding dogs free from genetic defects, which every breed has – one in this breed is subluxating patellas, which requires surgery & diffcult recovery time. Yes, this breed tends to have a lot of problems because of bad breeders – such as being prone to fractures & hypoglecemia. Also, they are most likely the hardest breed to fully housetrain – many never are. I also suggest that you check out (also at the AKC website) the Silky Terrier & Australian Terrier – two breeds similar in looks, but healthier because of less bad overbreeding. Good luck!

I have Yorkies. I know that this breed is notorious for needing C-Sections, however, that depends on the bone structure, weight, etc. of the female. I have one little girl that only weighs 3.8 pounds and is very fine boned..definitely not a breeder. On the other hand I have another girl that weighs 5 pounds and is more "sturdily" built. Her mother was a free whelper who never had any problems. In alot of cases breeders are striving for the smallest puppy they can get so they can ask for more money. Please make sure you thoroughly research the breeders, the puppy, the parents, EVERYTHING.

Yes, it's hard to get a female. They're usually more expensive too. Remember, however, that male dogs usually tend to be more affecionate while females may be more aloof. My mom was set on getting a female yorkie, but settled on a male, and couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
Also keep in mind that yorkies are often riddled with health problems. Do some research on the breed before you commit. My mom's yorkie is only 6 and may need a hip replacement. This breed tends to be pretty fragile health-wise, like many other small dogs. Have you considered getting a Papillon? They tend to have less health problems, which might save you thousands of dollars in the long run.
