How Big Was Your Yorkie Puppy at Two Three Months Old?

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

I'm interested in getting a puppy and I know the breeders like to keep them until they are about 10 weeks old. Usually, how big are the at that age?

My male yorkie was 2.8lbs when he was 10 weeks old. I took him from the breeder straight to the vet for a check up so we know the exact weight.

Could a Yorkie Puppy and a Rabbit Play Together?

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I'm smiling typing this question because it sounds kinda weird! But we have a Yorkie puppy and I was just wondering if we got a rabbit would she play with the rabbit or maul it to death?!

I'd say steer clear of the small furry animals with a yorkie.

They were originally bred to be ratters on ships and farms.

I stayed with my aunt and her family for a semester in college. They had a guinea pig. My yorkie used to hide in the corner of the room and watch the guinea pig in it's cage. My yorkie was great with other dogs, small and large, kids, strangers, etc. He just wasn't cool with the small black fuzzy thing in that cage!!

Does Anyone Know of Any Cheap Yorkie Puppy Breeders Around Sacramento?

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

i really want a girl Yorkie puppy but i don't like the idea of shipping. and i cant afford a $1500 puppy. if so please help out. and i would like it to be around Sacramento California! :) thanks

Getting a "cheap" yorkie puppy is not going to be a good idea. The reason the responsible breeders charge the higher prices is because they test their dogs for inheritable diseases such as luxating patellas, heart issues, eye issues, as well as other orthopedic problems. By getting some byb dog you're just going to end up paying even more money in vet bills. Go to a responsible breeder and ask to see the parents, as well as their health clearances. Google Yorkshire Terrier Club.

When Should We Try and Walk Our New Yorkie Puppy?

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

We have just got an 8 week old Yorkie puppy who has had his first shots. When can we put a collar on him and try and take him for a walk outside.

Not yet!! He has to finish the full course of vaccinations and then add on a couple of weeks, to be sure he's properly protected. However for sure, he can start to get used to his collar, and then eventually, his lead. Just put the collar on for a little while to start with. And although he will sit and scratch at it, try to take his attention off it by playing with his toys with him. Don't leave it on all the time, for now. And don't crate him with it on just in case he gets caught up. Puppies do horrible things! Once he's reasonably happy with it, attach his lead and, provided you are there to watch, let him wander around with it on. Don't pick it up at this point. Again after a few days doing this, pick it up, but don't pull, just encourage him to go with you by talking to him, using food bribes, etc. If you do this gradually, by the time he is ready to go off your property, he should at least be familiar with the collar and lead thing. He can, of course, go in your garden, assuming it's fenced in, now.

Good luck

How Can We Stop Our Cat Attacking Our New Yorkie Puppy?

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

We have just got a new Yorkie puppy one month ago. Our 3 year old female cat seemed to be adjusting to him but the other day she suddenly attacked him and if I hadn't been on hand, he would have been seriously injured. As it was he sustained a nasty gash which just missed his eye. How can we stop this happening again.

I'd keep a squirt bottle or a water gun with a good powerful stream nearby…..see if THAT works to deter the cat when she wants to pick on the puppy. I'm not really a cat person….but know folks who used this idea to train their cats to stay off kitchen counters & tables.

Might want to ask this in the Cat forum, just to see if anybody knows a better way to train a cat :)

Enough wet fur in return for pestering the pup & chances are, she'll leave well enough alone.

That, or you could figure out a way to keep the cat seperated from the pup, until the pup gets a little bigger & learns how to assert himself more.

How Often Should a Yorkie Puppy Be Given a Bath?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I have a yorkie puppy that is about 6 weeks i want to know how often it should be bathed? plus he is always outside and sometimes kinda smelly! any advice? also are their any home remedies to stop him from bitting?
oops when i did the queston i was kinda in a rush so i didn't write it correctly i ment 16 weeks not 6 thanks

With a puppy that young, I wouldnt bath him anymore than every two weeks. They need the oils on their skin and coat.

My yorkie who is now almost 3 has a bath about every 10 days. More in the summer when he's outside digging in the dirt and fewer in the winter when he's inside more.

They make scented puppy wipes (VERY similar to baby wipes) for a quick rub down or to wash their paws.

As for biting, all puppies bite and want to chew when they are teething. When he starts to nip at people, make a high pitched yelp and give the pup a new direction, such as a bone to bite on or a toy to play with. I think I lucked out with my little guy. He was never really a biter. He didnt want to chew on cords or shoes. There was a wooden box that he couldnt stay aways from while he was teething. But I would give him a stern "no" and redirect him.

What Kind of Treats Do I Feed a Yorkie Terrier Puppy?

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I'll be getting a Yorkie puppy soemtime this week and I'm not sure what type of treats to buy for it since it's so small. I have a West Highland White Terrier whose 16 pounds and his treats are like, those bacon strips for dogs, and other meaty like dog treats. I know that I can't give them to my yorkie since it's only like 5 pounds. Suggestions? Thanks!

My 2 Yorkies get " Zukes Mini Naturals " they are only 2 calories a piece, and are the perfect size for a little one. They're also really good for training. They come in Salmon and Peanut Butter flavours. I think there's one other kind too, but I can't remember.

My New Yorkie Puppy Has Diarrhea. What Should I Do?

Friday, March 27th, 2009

I just got a yorkie puppy yesturday and she is having diarrhea. Its not pure water, but pretty loose. Should I worry or is this just stress from new environment? Any remedies that anyone knows of? The vet does not open for another hour at least. Thanks for your help

Loose stools are common in puppies that have just been brought into a new, strange home. It is probably fear and nerves.
If it is, it should go away by this evening.

Where Can I Get a Yorkie Puppy in Pennsylvania?

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I am looking for a yorkie, puppy.
and i've checked out all the local shelters but i cannot find one.
I was hoping to find one there, but I did not succeed.
and i looked on the internet and the prices seem to be very high.
So, where can I get a cheap yorkie puppy in pennsylvania?
specifically in adams/york county areas.
Somewhere within an hour radius.

No dog is cheap. Expect to pay $750-$1500 for a well bred healthy Yorkie puppy.

Internet selling sites are ALL puppy mills and backyard breeder. Unhealthy overpriced puppies.

http://www.ytca.org has both a breeder and a rescue list. Remember, Yorkie Rescue groups are not shelters – they are usually dogs in foster homes. These dogs may or may not be on http://www.petfinder.com , so it's always best to fill out an application and do an interview – they will hold new dogs for the best match.
