If I go near her food or toys she tries to bite me.Any ideas how to stop her doing this
I have had her for 7 months and she is settled down very well. This is the only problem I have with her.How can I train her from doing this

Set up NILIF with her:

Make her earn her food by doing something for you, like sitting.

Dogs own nothing…..everything is yours.

If a dog threatens me over a toy or chew, I take it away.

Small Dog Breed Rescue Sites in the Chicago Illinois Area?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

I am looking for a small or toy dog. Preferably a yorkie or pomeranian. Do you know of any rescue sites? I have tried petfinder by the way! Thanks!

Petfinder has lots of them. Continue looking there. Some rescues don’t post just before Christmas as that’s not the best time to adopt a pet.

How Many of You Agree That Shelters and Rescues Are Where People Should Look for Puppies/dogs?

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

I have always adopted my puppies/dogs from animal shelters and rescue home shelters and have never had a problem. I recently rescued 2 yorkie puppies and they are now almost 11 weeks old and are a tremendous joy! I also have a rat terrier and she just turned 7 years old. I encourage people to adopt from animal and local rescue shelters. I have done it now for 35 years.

I disagree sorry whilst there are many dogs and puppies needing homes not every one wants a shelter dog i bought a Shih tzu puppy from a reputable breeder because i wanted a genetically sound puppy that’s parents had been health tested shown and offered me a guarantee for life

I did adopt a dog from a shelter and 2 years later and £6,000 later he was sadly put to sleep i don’t regret for for 1 min of adopting him just could not go through the heartache and seeing my dog in pain again it just about destroyed me He had so many things wrong with him and needed many operations and was always on pain medication that i was not prepared to do that again the puppy i have got it genetically sound

You know very little about shelter dogs there pedigree there genetics and i think its great people do give them homes but sadly i wont again because of what i went through when you have been through what i have with a dog and i loved that dog he was part of my family and it broke my heart i could never ever go through that again even know typing this it makes me upset just thinking about him
Every one has the right to buy or adopt and i really don’t agree with your statement sorry

Yorkie…Belly Band? Need Help?

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

I have never heard of a belly band…Can someone please tell me what this is?
I have a lady who just took in a rescue yorkie..whose previous owners had a belly band on his…
Is this dangerous for dogs? could it have harmed him?
Thanks:-)

A belly band is used on a male dog to keep him from urinating or marking in the house. It is a resuable cloth band that fits around the dog’s middle & over their penis. You place a woman’s pad inside the band. If the dog urinates the pad absorbs the urine & the pad can be changed as needed.
Bellybands are often used by breeders that keep several intact males for marking. They are quite popular with the toy dog people since a lot of people find toy breeds hard to housetrain. A bellyband could be used on an older or sick incontinent male too. Rescue foster homes (esp of toy dogs) use bellybands a lot on their rescue males while they are housetraining them. Rescue foster homes have multiple dogs. Take a dog that isn’t housebroken, hasn’t been neutered yet or was neutered just recently & still has hormones, his life has just changed dramatically & it’s a huge set-up for marking. One dog marks & all the dogs want to start marking. So they use a bellyband on the little fella to prevent these accidents while they housetrain the dog. Here is a picture.

How Do I Convince My Dad to Get a Yorkie?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

We just got a energetic labradoodle 8 months ago.The only reason we got her though is because our dad got a very expensive hunting trip.My mom doesn’t want another hunting trip.We want to get the yorkie from a shelter to rescue it.I show him that i’m responsible, but he still says NO.I’v been begging and i can’t stop! PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! PLEASE

Don’t just take care of the dog do other thing that you can prof to you dad that you are responsible. My son also ask me for a dog he said that is going to take care of his dog very well… but the problem was that he take care only the first month the I have to start taking care of the dog. Maybe that’s what your dad don’t want it to happened. Keep trying!!!

I Adopted a Cut Little Yorkie From the Pet Rescue 5 Days Ago.?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

He was neutered 3 days ago. When I got him his poop was kinda soft but since the neutering it has gotten completely loose what can i do to make it firm.

Could indeed be nerves and the stress of a new home and new food – if you are feeding new food, not what he’s used to.
Shouldn’t have gotten antibiotics for a simple neuter, so that’s out.

If the diarrhea continues another day, please get your dog to the vet for a fecal, you should have him checked out in any case. A fecal can check for bacteria or intestinal parasites and the vet will give you the right meds for your dog.
Leaving a small dog with diarrhea for more than 3 days is very risky, dehydration is a real problem, he can go into shock.
A fecal is not much, so get him to the vet if the diarrhea continues.

You might give him some plain boiled rice with a little white meat, skinless, boneless chicken chopped fine, or white rice with very lean chop meat added – that will help if the diarrhea is just from stress or change, but it won’t do any good if he has an intestinal infection or parasite, so get him to the vet if this continues.

What’s a Good Dog Food for a Yorkie and Shih Tzu?

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Ones about 7ish and others i think 3-4.
One i found attacked on the street n rescued it (Yorkie)
&& other i got at the pound (Shih tzu, laso apso)
So I don’t know the ages exactly.
But they hate there dog food.
They hate the taste i think cause they eat people food, but not their dog food.
So any goo tasting dog foods for them?

Science diet. for mature small dogs

We Have a New Female Yorkie/poo That Is a Rescue. She Is a Very Timid Dog That Runs From Us?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

She is happy to sit near my feet or on my lap. But when I go to pick her up she bolts. She will go to a corner and let me pick her up once she’s cornered.

Well, than don´t pick her up! Maybe she will let you do it without fear when she knows you better. But there are dogs who simply don´t like to be picked up. (My male Aussie – 60pounds – is one of them. But sometimes I have to carry him because he is 14 and has problems walking stairs.) I would suggest to NOT corner her only to pick her up, because you should build up her trust as you are new to her – not putting her under a load of stress. So as long as there is no reason to do it – and small dogs have own feet to walk too – don´t try it for the time being.
