I have a Yorkie that gets car sick; can you help?

I rescued a Yorkie last year & I adore him! We take our dogs with us everywhere we go so they can be a part of everything. The only problem is, he gets car sick. I could care less about messing up my car, but he is always so miserable while traveling. We try to feed him less or to skip a meal until later if it won't be too long, but he still seems to be almost green & his eyes get so watery.

Do they make dog dramamine? Do you know of anything that will help my little guy? I feel so bad for him. He has so much fun being a part of things, it's just the getting there that is the problem

Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!

Ginger can help tremendously for car sickness. Ginger snaps, putting a bit of ginger in his water, sort of like a ginger tea for him. Peppermint is helpful, and here's a link that might help you:

Most of the time car sickness is due to stress and not the actual care. There are a lot of home remedies that can be used to treat car sickness. I myself get nauseated in the car. I'm not sure about doggy dramamine, i'd talk to my veterinarian about that.

It sounds like your dog get stressed when riding in a car. try using the medicine called lesstress for dog anxiety. you can find it here: http://homegear.com/r/?q=23130623&r=1860

I used to have a yorkie who had the same issue. For short drives, I would be a passenger in the car and would have him straddle my left arm so he could look out the window. This would usually keep him from getting sick, and if he was going to, you would be able to feel his stomach start heaving so that you could put him on the floor to throw up (or box or whatever you use).

For long trips, we would use something like Dramamine. We consulted our veterinarian and he said that we could use some type of children's formula and gave us the correct doses. I can't remember exactly what the product was since I was just a kid. Besides, you really should consult a vet first before giving anything to your pup.

That happened to my maltese too at first, actually for a while, so I started opening the window for her, so she could feel the air in her face and that worked for her, but I did go to petco and asked them and they did recommend this liquid drops to give them, but they were kinda expensive, and the window thing worked for her.

If its sress related, try taking very short trips and then ending up somewhere fun. Play with him as soon as he gets out of the car. Gradually increase the amount of time in the car. This will show him that a car trip means fun. You can also get something called Rescue Remedy at your local pet store.

For my husband's dog, we alsways provide a distraction. Either another dog or one of my kids keeps her from thinking about the road trip. We also wait to feed her until after we are back home.

Dogs like humans can get sick from static in a car. Try installing a static strap to ur car and see what happens. A static strap is a rubber strip atached to the car and contacts the road. They are inexpensive and would be worth a try

Try taking him on short rides to get him accustomed to riding. Also, for a while, you may want to try a calming agent to take the nerve off. I have a Yorkie who gets car sick and use PetEaze with her. It's fairly inexpensive and is mostly camomile. Works great!
