I have recently taken in two rescue yorkie’s, brother and sister.
He has been castrated but she hasn’t been spayed.
She recently came into season, but I didn’t really have any problems with either of them, they did mate a couple of times, but as he has been castrated, it doesn’t really matter. The thing is, I have been told if she is going to be spayed, it should be done around two to three months after her last season.
Should I have her spayed, or should I not, what is better for her. Any vets out there with some good advice?
Thanks.
I have actually rescued 5 yorkies previous to these two, and lost four to cancer, two un-spayed dogs and two spayed bitches.
The vet told me that cancer often attacks dogs that are spayed too young. This is the reason I’m making an enquiry, as I am in a different position with an un-spayed bitch.
I was told at the rescue that they didn’t know when her last season was and so to wait until she came into season before booking her in two to three months after and yes I will have her teeth quickly cleaned whilst under ,not a full clean as they have recently been done.
The vet said she doesn’t really like keeping small dogs under too long when they’ve had other surgery.
There’s a lot of good advice here, and the thought of a dog attack whilst out has convinced me that spaying would in fact be best for her. Thanks for all your help.
Yes you should dogs that aren’t spayed are prone to deadly health problems .Like pyometra which is a infection in the womb which if not caught quick enough and the dogs spayed will kill and also mammary tummours ( cancer) which again if not caught quick and removed can kill. These are common in older unspayed dogs . Your yorkie is only seven so still not that old and it is better to have her done now why she is fit and health that wait till she is older and has one of these problems as there is more risky to her . So i would always advice getting her done . You could also ask the vet if when she is being done to give her teeth a quick clean if she needs it.

The main problem with females is when they are in season it can make other male dogs you encounter aggressive.Have a chat with a few vets is best.I’ve always had young dogs from pups, and they were doctored as soon as was possible.I’m not sure what vets would advise, but I think I’d be happier if my female was spayed at is cuts down not only on the mess they can leave on furniture but on the risk from other dogs.

It’s always best to get a female spayed, if she wonders off or gets lost a dog might try and mate and you might be left with a lot of puppies, but getting a dog spayed could change there personality and you could end up with a completely different dog.
But it’s what you thinks best for your pet if she’s a pedigree you could use her to breed.
I have a male Black Labrador pedigree, i refuse to get him done at the vets.

As she gets older her risk of pyometra increase which would result in a much higher risk spay. It would also only take one "accident" of her slipping out a door or a male dog getting in the yard for her to become pregnant which would be a risk to her life given this breeds small size and likely require an emergency spay/abort. Spaying would be the best option especially if you are on doubt of if it should be done or not.
Please disregard the poster suggesting you could possible breed a 7yo dog who is a rescue to boot.

I’m no vet, but my ‘good advice’ would be to get her spayed – 2/3 months from her last season when her system has settled down again. Why wasn’t she done before she came out of rescue? Most rescues do, but I guess you may have rescued her privately? Although, given her age, it might be too late to make much difference when it comes to avoiding female cancers, at least you won’t have to worry about having to confine her.
Hopefully your male was castrated (are his testicles missing?). Although castrated males will mount and penetrate, especially if it’s not long since his operation, it’s not usual.
Add – Michael, this b itch is 7, and that’s way too old to be having a litter!!

Yes… have her spayed a couple months after she goes out of heat. Pyometra is a real danger-I have known dogs to die from it. As she is a rescue, there is NO reason to keep her intact, and I am in fact surprised that the rescue didn’t insist on her being spayed, anyway.
