My yorkie terrier is biting his right hip hair off and his left foot. HELP?

He is 11 months old, 5 lbs. Very happy and playful but he has been chewing his right hip hair off for a couple months and we didn't notice it was a problem. Now he has chewed his left foot hair almost down to the skin. He has had fleas but would that cause that??
What do I do?

I would suggest taking him to the vet. If he has a skin lesion, he needs to have a skin scraping, to rule out mites. He could have allergies, or he could have a local irritation. But you need to find out what is going on to be able to treat him properly.

In relation to food, I would not suggest changing his diet until you talk to your vet. If he needs to change food, then you can discuss what type of diet he should be on. Changing food a lot right now may make it more difficult to find a diet, should that be needed. There are specific rules to diet trials.

Yes, fleas could cause that.

However, food allergies sounds like the more probably cause. Biting and feet and scratching at ears is an indication that there is something in a food that is not meshing well with a doggie's system.

Yorkies (and many other dogs) have a high tendancy to show allergy symptoms like you have described to food containing corn. Try to eliminate that from his diet and see if you notice any changes.
