Which is better: Shiba Inu or Yorkie Terrier?

My parents said I could get a dog. My brother and my mom want a Yorkie or a Yorkie Poo. However, my dad and I want a Shiba Inu. We would most likely get an older dog (ages 2 to 4). Which kind of dogs are better?
I will most likely adopt considering we want a young dog.

The whole family needs to sit down and talk it out. Shiba Inus and Yorkies are VERY different and they have different needs and requirements. Its a big leap from one to the other.

Discuss things like:

1) Grooming needs - Yorkies need daily brushing and frequent professional visits to keep their hair from tangling and matting, and they don't shed. While Shibas need weekly brushing, few trips to the groomer, and are seasonally heavy shedders.

2) Exercise needs - Yorkies are active indoors but due to their smaller size aren't too insane to handle, they tend to only need short daily walks. Shiba's need longer daily walks and tend to be a handful in the house because they are big enough to be annoying when running around.

3) Intelligence/Trainability - Yorkies are fairly easy to train in obedience because they LOVE to learn and are fairly smart, yet they have problems house training due to their small size. Shiba's are VERY intelligent and stubborn and that makes them fairly difficult to train (i tend to think they're more for owners who have experience with dogs that are not really motivated to learn and that can open doors and climb fences if they're bored…)

So figure out what the whole family wants. This isn't about what YOU want in YOUR dog or what THEY want in THEIR dog: it's about what EVERYONE is willing to put up with in terms of care and chores. Everyone needs to agree because everyone will be living with this dog.

Find the best INDIVIDUAL dog not breed…

If you want to get a dog from a breeder, the most important thing is to find a good breeder whom will help you make a qualified decision. Good breeders know their breed and know what kind of family suits it best.

Of course, you should always consider adoption first.

But seriously, just visit your local shelter and play with their dogs. Adoption personnel are also very helpful in finding a perfect dog.

Shibas are a lot of dog. You will have to be prepared for dominance, dog-to-dog aggression and never allowing the dog off leash. Shibas aren't always like this, but it's best to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. You may end up with a dog like this if you choose this breed.

The important thing is to choose a responsible breeder or rescue. Breeders who breed to better the breed, who test for genetic problems and who are very careful about who they sell their pups to are the ones you want to deal with. Look for members of the national breed club.

As for rescues, they can be very careful about who their dogs go to. Many require a home visit and references from veterinarians or other dog professionals. This is to ensure that their rescue dogs go to a home that is prepared for them - sometimes rescues have bad experiences that require a patient, prepared owner.
