Is It Bad to Have My Yorkie Dog on a Meow Mix Cat Food Diet?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I have 5 cats and 1 dog. My dog is a yorkie and she absolutely refuses to eat her dog food. It just sits there and goes to waste. I have tried tons and tons of different brands but she refuses. The only thing she will eat is meow mix! She loves it! Is it ok for her to be eating meow mix and nothing else?
Ok, after reading all the responses and now that I know its bad, what brand of dog food would you suggest for a 1 1/2 yr old yorkie?

yes, it is bad for them. It is not formulated for a dog. But cat food does smell and taste better than most dog foods, so I understand her position on the subject. This link answers exactly the same question as posted here with an excellent answer. Please check it out, it says it better than I ever could!

since your dog is picky, I would try wellness super 5 mix. My bichon loves it! and the kibble is small enough for a smaller breed dog.

How Early Can You Neuter a Male Yorkie-Poo? What Supplies Do We Need for His First Days Home?

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

We are getting a yorkie-poo puppy for Christmas. He will be 11 weeks old when he arrives from the breeder. How early should they be neutered? What supplies should we purchase prior to picking him up? The breeder estimates his weight will be 2.5 lb when we get him. I would appreciate any helpful advice. Thanks!

You can neuter a dog at around 6 months of age. You’ll need a leash, collar, food and water dish, crate, food, et al.

The bigger concern here should be that this "breeder" isn’t reputable. I’m assuming the puppy is being shipped, due to your use of the word "arrives." No reliable breeder will ship a puppy; they should have extensively interviewed you and wanted to know just as much about you as you do about the puppy. A binding contract would have been signed already.

The only real justification for breeding is betterment of a breed via health checked, genetically certified, and titled parents. Do you have proof that this puppy’s parents meet these requirements?

It sounds likely that you are getting scammed. If you want a mutt (since "Yorkie-Poo" is just a label slapped onto a mixed breed in order to wrongly justify a higher selling price), you can find plenty of them at your local shelter or see adoptable dogs in your area on petfinder.com.

Instead of funding disreputable breeders whose sole interest is profit and profit alone, why not give the gift of a happy home to a dog in need? Christmas is, after all, supposed to be the season of giving and mercy.

Edit: Go ahead TD fairies. My concern is with this asker getting a healthy pup, which will not come from a disreputable breeder.

How Can I Stud Out My Tea Cup Yorkie ?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

My Yorkie is full breed, however he is not AKC registered. He has great temper, very friendly and extremely smart. Everytime someone sees him, they ask where did i get him at, and that happens often, especially when we go to vet’s office. So i was thinking about studing him either for litter or a fee.
He does have AKC registered parent and the other parent does not have papers but also purebred. My dog weights 3.4 pounds.

How much does he weigh? If he’s under 7 lbs., he’s not a "teacup"…just a plain old Yorkie. If he’s over 7 lbs., he’s an oversized Yorkie.

Do you know if he carries the genes for luxating patella? What about eye problems? Have you had him CERFed? What was his OFA/Pennhip hip rating?

How do I know that your dog would be producing healthy puppies? If I don’t…why on earth would I breed to him??

There is a lot more to being breeding quality than having a nice personality.

So you want to use your dog at stud:

How Do I Know if My Puppy Is a Yorkie or Morkie?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

I jus recieved a 2yrd old rare whit yorkie. Her papers say she is a yorkie but everyone that i know that have a yorkie say my pup is a morkie. How can i tell what she is?

There is NO SUCH THING as a white Yorkie – it’s not "rare"; it’s impossible. The genes do not exist.

You have a mix; and whomever bred it and registered it as a purebred Yorkie is an unethical, lying twit. Whomever advertised and sold it as "rare" was looking for a gullible sucker. I hope that wasn’t you.

What Food Should I Feed My Yorkie to Make His Coat Super Shiny?

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

I have a year old Yorkie. I feed him Natural Balance now and he likes it. Is there a food that caters to the Yorkie coat, making it shinier but that actually contains high quality ingredients as well?

Also, please don’t suggest Avoderm as he is allergic to it :(
My vet told me to give him a raw egg once a week MAX, especially since he has a sensitive tummy. Isn’t an egg each day for a 7 lb dog unhealthy?

Hello,
I will tell you the type of food my dog is on! As I get crazy compliments on her shiney, healthy, silky coat. It is called Wellness, it has great ingredients and is good for dogs with sensitive stomachs! I get the kind in the purple bag, I think it’s the chicken kind. I tried a few different brands, because my pup (1year 2 months) has a very sensitive stomach.
Good Luck!

How Long Does a Yorkie Live and How Long Does a German Shepard Live?

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

I need 2 know when a Yorkie would die an i need 2 know when a German shepard would die.

It depends – if you treat them well, they might just gain a few extra years. German Sheperds live about 10-12 years – avarage dog life-span. But they have a bigger-than-avarage tendency to have hip dysplasia. My used-to-be dog, King the German-Sheperd, lived a short and ill life – seven years. However, it did had to do with the time he spend without walking or going out, he shrunk a bit and got ill.
Yorkies are smaller dogs, so their avarage life span must be bigger, like about 14. However, don't only trust the facts, because a premature\later death can be provoced in both breeds.

What Is My Yorkie Keep Using the Bathroom in His Crate?

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

I have owned my Yorkie for over a year, crate trained. Now all of sudden he defecating and urinating in his crate everyday. It does not seem to be an accident, as it looks more like he is doing it on purpose. What is his problem?

Please only reply if you have something intelligent to say. Thanks.

He may have a medical issue you aren't aware of. Rule that out first. Next, are you spending enough quality time with it? It may be acting out. Try a behaviorist, or ask your vet. good luck

How Do I Raise a Siberian Husky and a Yorkie to Be Friends?

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

My boyfriend wants to get a Siberian Husky, but I want to get a yorkie. I'm afraid to get a Husky and then raise it, and then get a yorkie. I don't know what the husky would do, based on its "natural hunting instincts." If we get both dogs at the same time as puppies, would they grow up to be friends?

Huskies do have high prey drives, but every dog is an individual and some go way out of what is "normal" for their breeds.

Yes, if you raise them together, they *should* be fine.

If you get the Husky first, make sure to socialize it and raise it around small dogs (such as taking it to the dog park – after getting it its vaccinations.)

Edit in reply to J'sHuSkY: Yes, Huskies do certainly have their own play… style (rough!) and certainly do prefer the company of other Huskies. …Though my foster dog's current best friend is a German Short Haired Pointer (but she plays rougher than most GSPs.)

What Is the Difference Between a Yorkie, Maltese, and Shi Tzu?

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

I am planning to get a new pup. I cant decide between a yorkie, maltese, and shi tzu. Please tell me the positves and negatives and differences. Thanxx.
XOXO

I can suggest reading up on each breed and then deciding for yourself which one fits your life best. They're all very similar in that they're strictly companion dogs. They weren't really bred for anything other than being a pet. They all require professional grooming, and regularly, if you want them looking their best. So that can get pricey. They all tend to be kind of yappy, with the shih-tzu possibly being the least yappy. At least that's what I've found being exposed to them all. I work at a veterinary hospital. They can each have health problems that are specific to their breeds as well as specific to just being small breeds. The health problems are usually worse if they came from a pet store, just because of the bad conditions they're raised in from birth and the fact that no testing is done on the parents.

So there's my advice. Research all 3, read as much as you can, then make your choice. :] But personally, I like shih-tzus the best out of all 3.

What Is the Best Holistic Canned Dog Food for a Yorkie That Has Had Problems With Bladder Stones?

Friday, April 10th, 2009

My Yorkie has had issues with stones, the vet wants to put him on Royal Canin Urinary prescription food, i looked at the can and the food is garbage. Anyone maybe know of a holistic food that would be good for that problem, has to be canned food.

Yes most all of the prescription foods for things are garbage.
However they do exactly what they are supposed to do and that is prevent stones.
Most dogs do fine on the them even though they are not the highest quality.
When a dog has serious health issues you have to look at what will stop the body from forming stones. If it takes a prescription food then that would be better than having to have stones removed over and over.

I have a cat who had them. She has been on one of the prescription food and she does fine. She looks great and has a beautiful coat and has not had any issues for more than 2 years. Before that she was eating a very high quality holistic food and had to have stones removed twice.
