What Should I Know Before Getting a Yorkie?

So I am interested in getting a yorkie. Are they're things I should know before I purchase one. Anything I should get. Puppy proof. Anything about purchasing them from Online. And ways to avoid and know who are scammers.

If i were you i vote against buying ANY dogs online unless you are on a rescue site or dealing directly with the CKC or AKC and their reputable breeders, its really hard to tell where exactly you are getting them from and how they are being bred (ie. puppy mills, good homes, interbreeding) , also its really important to meet the dogs to choose one based on personality, outgoing dogs are usually a better choice sometimes a dog that doesn't come up to you can have health concerns. I had a yorkie and when i first got him i never realized how much of a challenge a small dog can be, they are smaller and they get hurt a lot more easily (playing with large dogs can even result in death as in one case i know of) you will need to watch out for hawks, eagles, owls and other large animals. Water is also an issue as with them being so small it is easier for them to fall in to bodies of water and not be able to get out. my experience with my yorkie was that he chewed on EVERYTHING, he had lots of toys that was not the issue he was just being a puppy. I had an accident with mine and although im sure its not common i just thought i would mention it because their bones are so brittle, mine fell through the back of a staircase (they were like a plank staircase) when he was a puppy, he got excited and went to jump up on me and just slipped through the back, i would suggest carrying him down if i were you, i was lucky that mine was not badly injured!

Good luck and perhaps do some more research on these dogs before getting one, rent a book from the library you can never be too informed :)

I love Yorkies. But keep in mind, they are :
    small lap dog
    can be quite vocal
you would need to groom them or take them to groomers because they have hair, not fur
can be hard stubborn to potty train.
On line purchasing can be hit or miss..just make sure and research the breeder, check with prior clients of theirs, ask for info on the dam and sire and get a proof of health guarantee.
The #1 Best advice is to get a crate. It makes it easy to potty train, gives them a safe cozy den to sleep, keeps them safe while you cannot supervise them and it's great for traveling.

They are terriers and terriers are pistols. Trust me I have one. Be prepared…..terriers are pills. Mine is sitting next to me growling at something outside. They are stubborn and have a mind of their own. Don't go to a pet store. Look online for a good breeder and talk to them to make sure they know what they are talking about. As for puppy prof…..move everything that you don't want destroyed. Good Luck!

Keep in mind that dog ownership is a big responsibility. You better have the funds to feed it quality food and take it to the vet when necessary.

well these dogs r very fragile, if u drop them (they r very fussey an mite wiggle outta ur arms) they can break their legs. o an they r curious an mite get stuck…make sure there r not small spots or places were they could crawl into…things lik the couches or tables mite hav a fancy design of metal where the dog can get its head stuck…u jus really hav 2 look round the house. i suggest u jus keep the dog in a certain area that u now is safe…

hyper. bark a lot. terriers in general are fiesty so you've gotta teach them to get along with other animals and not to be mean to people. they can be trouble makers. grooming is important. you might want to wash their face every day because fur on their face tends getting stinky from food. they require sweaters in the winter (if you're in a cold climate) they don't like to be alone.

yorkies are adorable dogs. i love mine!

i noticed another girl said they're fragile. true, but mine has jumped out of my arms and off high surfaces many tiems and never has been injured (and i'm 5'9 so to jump from my arms is pretty high)

Anyone who sells a dog online is either a puppy mill or a scam artist. DO NOT EVER buy a dog without going in person to the breeder's home and seeing her facilities, dogs, and puppies and being able to ask questions. NO decent breeder allows pups to go home without extensive interviews!!! Cash for puppy breeders should be avoided like the plague, there's a reason they want you to take the dog and leave right away!

    Things you will need:
    -Crate
    -Bed
    -Leash/collar/harness
    -Bowls
    -Food
    -Brush / comb
    -Puppy shampoo
    -Toys/bones
    -Book on crate training/housebreaking
    -Vet and groomer phone numbers

Things you should know about Yorkies:
    -they are hyper
-they can be nippy and aggressive if not raised with a firm hand
-they often chase cats and small animals
    -they are difficult to housebreak
-they require daily brushing and monthly professional grooming
-they are prone to dental disease and need daily toothbrushing and regular checkups by a vet in case professional cleanings are required
-they are prone to allergies / skin disorders and should be fed a premium quality food (no Purina, Pedigree, Alpo, etc.)
-puppies are prone to hypoglycemia and should be monitored closely their first few weeks to assure the puppy eats every 2 hours. If he doesn't eat, he can go into shock, then coma, and die very suddenly.

Please get a few books on Yorkies and puppy care before you bring home a new puppy. Better to research before hand than be here asking emergency questions afterwards!

All little dogs pee on the floor and are crappy at tricks because they have little rat brains. Avoid the trouble and get a lab or something a little smaller. Anything without the name terrior.

NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store..

buying on-line is risky too.. if you cannot go and see the pups, see the parents, see the premises… you dont want a pup from them..
if the parents have NOT been shown to prove they are good quality dogs worthy of being bred they are simply a back-yard breeder – producing low quality pups for the sole purpose of making money…

NEVER pay a cent for a pup who hasnt been vet checked and vaccinated…

Yorkies are Terriers… Terriers are terrors – bred to hunt and kill small varmits. they will be destructive if bored..

Good answers from those who obviously know them, but some common health concerns are also:

    vascular liver shunts (portosystemic shunt)
    low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
    heart disease (mitral valve degeneration)

Look on a Yorkie website to find out more possible diseases and which ones can be hereditary. Have the puppy vet checked when you buy it with a health guarantee (i.e. don't fall deeply in love with the little cutie till you are absolutely sure it's a healthy one :) .

Just be aware that they like to be top of the pack, so you have to inforce that you are the "alpha dog" as soon as the pup comes home. Otherwise he/she may learn that you are not the boss and you will then have obedience issues.
Also, they tend to brak at strangers, so be ready to cope with that, it may get annoying.
Yorkies dont require alot of grooming, but should be combed to keep the coat from getting knots. They do not carry much dander so are good for people with allergies.
This website is all about grooming Yorkies :
    http://www.yorkie.org/dogs/grooming_yorkies.html
This is a very elaborate website, you wont have to go to this much effort unless he is going to be a show dog.
Don't give them rawhide treats, its not worth the risk because as the dog chews them it softens and breaks off, and often gets caught in the dogs throat.
They are also very hard to potty train, so be aware that if it's going to be a house dog, you will need some patience.

I wouldnt buy a dog online, its very risky and you could end up with a dodgy dog. Its best to get them from proffessional breeders. Look around on the internet, in the white pages, or ask around at your vets or pet store.

Good luck, they are great dogs to own.

Do as much research as you possibly can on the breed to be sure it's the right one for you. Learn the CONS of owning a Yorkshire Terrier and ask yourself if you're willing to work around them. Do as much research as you possibly can on dog care.

When looking for a Yorkshire Terrier, be sure you're getting one from a reputable, responsible breeder. Check out the Yorkshire Terrier club of America or you can even consider a rescue.

Honestly im a big dog lover but fell in love with my moms yorkie 'ashley'
she is very sweet, loves little stuffed toys and squeaky toys. She is actually an older dog with some health troubles but has a great personality. my mom has 4 other dogs but theyre all bigger and know not to mess with her lol
Yorkies do not think theyre small dogs by any means and one cute thing she does is show her teeth but not in a mean way- she actually smiles at you when you give her treats.
One thing you should know is that they have a big personailty….she can be very persistant if she wants something. she is the toughest small dog but also is very sweet- she loves being on lap and going for rides.

Honestly i think you would love one!! They can be groomed to have that long silky hair but its so much upkeep. id say trim her down. keep hair short and you can even put a bow in her hair to keep it in her eyes. Her vet says she looks lilke chewbacca from star wars lol

Just know if you get one they can be persistant and have a big personailty.

Now as for buying one i would NOT buy one from someone online who ships them- u have to watch out for puppy mills and scammers. You might want to check locally in newspapers, do searches for breeders or even rescues in your area. another thing i urge people to do is check their local animal shelters.

    I wish you luck hun
