How Do I Find a Reputable Yorkshire Terrier Breeder in MN?

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

I’m interested in getting a Yorkshire Terrier. I want a pure breed. I’m not opposed to adopting one, but usually there isn’t any or much information about the dog available. I will be looking at the shelters in my area too, but I would like to also look into breeders. I just don’t know how to find a reputable one here in MN in the Twin Cities area. I’ve tried searching online but there’s so many that I can’t tell the differance between them.

I was also wondering if anyone knew how much a Yorkie would cost through a breeder or through adoption. I’ve seen pricing online ranging from $150 to $2500 for both adoption and purchasing.

Thanks for any help!

Jamie

have you checked the breed club website for a list of reputable breeders?

likely a pup from a reputable breeder will be around 1,000. Ad from health tested, proven parents, and lifetime support from a caring breeder, it will be well worth it!

Or you could check for a yorkie rescue in your area.

Where to Get a Yorkshire Terrier?

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Me and my family have been looking all over the place for a good place to get a Yorkshire terrier. We looove yorkies and really want one, but the last dog we got, we got for free from our neighbors, so we dont really know how to go about finding a good dog breeder. I live in NH, but we’re willing to go into Massachusetts or Vermont or any surrounding areas to find a breeder. So where should we go to find one? or are there any good websites that we could find one with?

go to the yorkshire terrier club of america and go to the links for breeder contact. I’ll find some links for you.

This is an imortant link that you should definitely read before taking the next step in getting a dog

Mini Yorkshire Terrier…how Much Straight From a Breeder?

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

I want a Mini Yorkshire Terrier…how much would she (want a girl) run from a breeder directly?

No such thing as a Mini Yorkshire Terrier, and if that is what the breeder is calling it you're paying too much…and just wait until you see the vet and animal behaviorist bills..

Breeders………?

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

I'm searching for a reputable breeder of West Highland White Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers in the NYC Metro area. My last two Yorkies were obtained from Pet shops, and yes I know that they are usually from puppy mills, but I couldn't help it, they were so cute and I got attached to them and just wanted to give them a loving home. While I feel for the pets in the shops, both of my dogs have had something wrong with them when they were purchased, and I don't want to go through the monetary costs of having to correct the pet stores negligence on these animals. So I am looking to add another member to my family and want it to be from someone who knows what they are doing and not someone who is looking to make a quick buck. I am aware of adopting from a shelter however it breaks my heart everytime i see these animals caged up, with sad faces waiting for someone to pick them to take home and I just end up in tears when i leave there :( Thanks for the help!

Here are a couple of resources.

The Westie Club of America has a referral contact for NY here:

http://www.westieclubamerica.com/teamwestie/tw_rrc.html

There is also a website for the Westie Club of New England that may be of help:

http://www.westhighlandwhiteterrierclubofnewengland.com/

I know you mentioned how you dislike shelters, but you may consider adopting a young adult Westie from a Westie rescue group (not a shelter, usually a network of individuals who foster dogs). The New England Club has a phone number/email for rescue:

http://www.westhighlandwhiteterrierclubofnewengland.com/html/westie_rescue.html

You can also try going to http://www.petfinder.com and doing a search on Westies in your zip code — you'll probably find some good leads!

Congratulations on deciding to search for a responsible breeder, and good luck!

Yorkshire Terrier or Dachshund???

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

hi, i have narrowed my options down to the Yorkshire terrier, or the dachshund. i have breeders of both dogs near me, so i can go to them to get the dog. please help with these questions…?

which one is likely to cost more?

which one sheds more?

which is better for minor dog allergies?

which is going to live longer?

which is better with other (caged) pets in the house?

which is usually better with kids?

which one likes the outdoors more?

i know that the yorkie needs grooming……

ANYTHING ELSE THAT SHOULD INFLUENCE MY DECISION???

Cost… that’d have to be the Yorkie (as more expensive.) But if you adopt a rescue dog then this isn’t so much an issue (that’s a hint by the way.)

Shedding… both dogs have hair coats and no undercoat so shedding is low. This includes all the coat varieties of Dachshund – smooth, longhair, or wirehair. Yorkies with their long coats need trimming and grooming as you know.

Allergies… about the same really as far as humans. As far as the dog, Yorkies have more skin allergies. These often come about from fleas, so managing that can prevent the allergies.

Longevity… both are small dogs, so 15 years or more is typical. Dachsies can have back problems which can be avoided through watching their weight and not allowing them to jump on/off furniture. Yorkies can also have disc problems but not to the same degree as the Dachshund.

Caged animals… Dachsies are hounds, Yorkies are terriers, both are bred to go after small animals. I would not let that caged rabbit/ rat / hamster/ etc loose around either one. I will say that my long dogs get along fine with cats so socialization helps here.

Kids… NO small dog is a good choice for small children. The dog can be easily hurt or become nippy and defensive due to rough handling. If you have kids under 8 their play with the dog should be supervised. That said, you can get a larger Dachshund than you can a Yorkie – we had a large standard that weighed 30 pounds that was pretty mellow with kids.

Outdoors… Dachshund, hands down. They love the outdoors and they socialize with other dogs well. But, as with any dog they need to be trained and socialized early to avoid aggression problems.

As far as anything else, I think Dachsies are more personable and sweet than Yorkies, but then again I’ve been ‘owned’ by six of them so I’m biased.

Finally, if all you care about is having a pet, please consider adopting an adult dog. You benefit because you’ll know exactly what you’re getting personality-wise and you don’t have to deal with the puppy issues. And you’re doing a good thing in giving the dog a loving home.

There are a lot of poorly bred Yorkies about, some of whom aren't even purebred, so to be sure of what you are getting make sure you buy one that is KC Reg
