hi, i have narrowed my options down to the Yorkshire terrier, or the dachshund. i have breeders of both dogs near me, so i can go to them to get the dog. please help with these questions…?
which one is likely to cost more?
which one sheds more?
which is better for minor dog allergies?
which is going to live longer?
which is better with other (caged) pets in the house?
which is usually better with kids?
which one likes the outdoors more?
i know that the yorkie needs grooming……
ANYTHING ELSE THAT SHOULD INFLUENCE MY DECISION???
Cost… that’d have to be the Yorkie (as more expensive.) But if you adopt a rescue dog then this isn’t so much an issue (that’s a hint by the way.)
Shedding… both dogs have hair coats and no undercoat so shedding is low. This includes all the coat varieties of Dachshund – smooth, longhair, or wirehair. Yorkies with their long coats need trimming and grooming as you know.
Allergies… about the same really as far as humans. As far as the dog, Yorkies have more skin allergies. These often come about from fleas, so managing that can prevent the allergies.
Longevity… both are small dogs, so 15 years or more is typical. Dachsies can have back problems which can be avoided through watching their weight and not allowing them to jump on/off furniture. Yorkies can also have disc problems but not to the same degree as the Dachshund.
Caged animals… Dachsies are hounds, Yorkies are terriers, both are bred to go after small animals. I would not let that caged rabbit/ rat / hamster/ etc loose around either one. I will say that my long dogs get along fine with cats so socialization helps here.
Kids… NO small dog is a good choice for small children. The dog can be easily hurt or become nippy and defensive due to rough handling. If you have kids under 8 their play with the dog should be supervised. That said, you can get a larger Dachshund than you can a Yorkie – we had a large standard that weighed 30 pounds that was pretty mellow with kids.
Outdoors… Dachshund, hands down. They love the outdoors and they socialize with other dogs well. But, as with any dog they need to be trained and socialized early to avoid aggression problems.
As far as anything else, I think Dachsies are more personable and sweet than Yorkies, but then again I’ve been ‘owned’ by six of them so I’m biased.
Finally, if all you care about is having a pet, please consider adopting an adult dog. You benefit because you’ll know exactly what you’re getting personality-wise and you don’t have to deal with the puppy issues. And you’re doing a good thing in giving the dog a loving home.

A Yorkshire Terrier is likely to cost more up front but in the long run I have heard bad things about dachsunds health problems.
A Dachshund sheds more than a yorkie
The yorkie is better for minor dog allergies
I’m not sure which one lives longer, it depends on how well youtake care of it.
dachshunds tend to be mean and I have a yorkie that is caged and she is fine,
But of these types of dogs are good with kids if both the kid and the dog get socialized together. The kid must know how to love a pet without beatin gon it or scaring it and the pet must know not to attack the kid.
Both types of these dogs like the outdoors. ALl dogs like outside.
I groom more Yorkie myself once every 3 weeks. I took her to the grromers once and saw how they did her grooming and I have been doing it now. A lot less expensive.
I have 3 yorkie puppies looking for homes. 2 boys and 1 girl…

Dachsunds have much better personalities than Yorkies. They are calmer. They are also likely to be better for allergies if you get a standard-hair.

The breed that suits you
I’d say Yorkie, but that’s only because I have experience with them
Yorkies, are likely to cost more as they are one of the america’s top dog bered
Dachshund sheds more, Yorkies are said to be hypoallergenic, either way; they bother shed, but the Yorkie sheds less than Dachshund
Smaller the dog the longer it lives, and also how you care for it; so it really depends on you, cause you’ll be the dog’s goddess
Yorkies are GREAT with kids, and actually it is said that Dachshund is the number ONE agressive breed out there, followed by the Chihuahua.
Yorkies are energetic little dogs, love the outdoors and LOVE to run in circles ! Ha. At least my neighbour’s one does
Just don’t overdo it with them; remember, they’re small !
Yes, Yorkies do need grooming.. [: but it’s worth it !
Yorkies are also VERY intelligent breed, though they do tend to have a mind of their own, and can be stubborn to train. I’ve train my neighbour’s 3 year old yorkie many tricks. And went beyond basic obedience
Good Luck ! and I hope I helped

just so you know. most dachshunds get very cranky with old age. i have seen it many times. you should go to the breeders homes, and spend some time with the adult dogs. and ask the breeder all your questions.

cost: yorkie
shedding: Yorkie, they have the longest hair, so hence the massive shedding.
Allergy: dachshund, they have less hair
live longer: Both
With pets: depends how you raise it
Better with kids: again it depends how you raise it
outdoors:yorkie, because dachunds are so short they have a hard time getting through the grass. i hope this helps,
God bless,
EDIT: oh, and dachunds aren't mean it's just how you raise them. *ahem* Codibub *ahem*

My personal choice would be the dachshund! I can't stand Yorkies! But then I'm a "Dal Gal".
But, to make your own decision … here's info on both that may address your questions.

both dogs are very lovable and caring and would make great pets
~the cost depends on where you’re getting your dog from
~all dogs shed but the yorkie would probably shed more (if its a long haired dachshund then mebbe the terrier sheds)
~that would probably relate to the question above
~both dogs would prob live to be 14 or 15 (cuz theyre both small. big dogs live around 11-13 yrs)
~yorkie. dachshunds hav a knack or destroying things and digging and getting into small spaces though the yorkie’s yapping could scare other pets
~both are great with kids
~dachshund (it likes to dig btw)

Both Yorkies and Dachshunds do shed. Both need grooming. The Dachshund comes in 3 different coat types: smooth, longhair and wirehair.
I wouldn’t think either is particularly good for allergies, though I think it depends on the individual dog.
Dachshunds are long lived and can live to be 15 and older. My old dachshund lived to be 17.
Neither Yorkies or Dachshunds are good with small caged pets. I guarantee you, the dachshunds will attempt to kill them every opportunity he gets. The Yorkie, being a terrier, was bred as a ratter and is still capable of performing this function.
Dachshunds can be good with kids but will not tolerate rough handling. They will not hesitate to use their teeth if they feel it’s necessary.
Dachshunds where bred as hunting dogs, can be high energy and generally enjoy being outdoors, though they are meant to live inside the home.
Yes, yorkies need professional grooming which be an expense you’ll be looking at probably every 6 weeks. Dachshunds can be groomed at home.
To be honest, since you have other caged pets, I would not consider either of these breeds.

Both can become very costly in the long run. Yorkies can end up with ALC issues, and need to be groomed regularly. Doxies can end up having severe back issues, leading to surgery.
Yorkies do not shed, but doxies do
With the allergies, I am sensitive to dogs like yorkies', oils and break out into hives. Doxies make me sneeze.
Both can live very long lives
As for caged animals, depends on socialization on your part.
Neither are good with very small children. It is not recommended that little dogs be around children under 8 years of age.
They both should enjoy the outdoors, as long as you make it a positive experience
Consider a rescue group. If this is going to be your first dog, an older one might suit your needs. Plenty of people get rid of their purebreeds because of lack of training, loss of interest, moving issuess, divorce, bankruptcy and so forth. Most rescues will have the dogs fostered, and basic training is done in these homes.
