its nearly that time of year again nov 5th and i need to get something sorted out to stop my 6 year old yorkshire terrier from being terrified!….las t year was her first year with us as we rescued her from a dog home the september before so we dont have a clue about her past as she was picked up roaming the streets!….when bonfire night came she was petrified and hid behind the sofa shaking really bad!….is there anything i can give her to calm her ?….thx
Serene-um, scullcap and valarien compound both available from most pet shops, try feeding her pasta early evening as it has a sleepy effect on them, then just have her in lounge with all lights on so the fireworks dont light up the room and with the television on louder than usual, just remember not to over fuss her and it wioll come across to her that you are praising her!

You've got a couple of choices – you can either go to your vet and get him to prescribe tranquilizers (which I don't like because of the side effects). Or you can buy an all natural remedy called Bach's Flower Essences, Rescue Remedy. It's what I use for my greyhound who's afraid of thunder. A dog the size or a yorkie would only get 1 drop and it takes 15 – 20 minutes to take affect. You should be able to buy it at a drug store, health food store or from a holistic vet.

Put her in a room where there is a loud TV or radio, so she can't hear the noise. Comfort her and make sure she can't hurt herself. Dogs ears are much more sensitive than humans, so the sound is very very loud to them.

I sympathise, my cat hides behind the sofa as well, best thing you can do is be with them and try to give them a safe place to hide.
It is really is daft these days as fireworks will be going off every weekend for months now. Its more like firework season, why they have to be so loud so one person can wake an entire city is beyond me.

I had a lab that was also gun-shy and would get stressed each 4th of July. The vet would give me maybe five tranq pills so that for the days of fireworks, I could give her some relief. I ended up not giving her the full dose … just enough to chill her a bit, the poor thing.

How about taking her to a retreat or boarding kennel that's out of the way, like out in the country away from your bonfire night, some places offer really cozy vacations for you pet just for such cases.

You can get a mild sedative from your vet. There are also plug ins which you can get from the vet, they are quite expensive, but my mum used them last year and they worked. Her dogs are usually frantic wrecks at this time of year, but with the plug ins, they were fine.

Just stay with her and cuddle her reassure her and don't go out and leave her ! You can't really do any more maybe over the years she will improve . Some of my Yorkies were OK once they got the routine because they live so long the older they get the easier it becomes .If you know a homoeopathist you can ask for some calming globoly but they don't always help don't give her any chemicals the problem isn't that big !

put the dog in a small space such as the bathroom with a toy and a couple towls. or if you have a gfriend witha a dog put them together. dogs can comfort each other better than a himan can. then put them both in the bathroom.

The pet shop sell Cd's with sounds (like fire works) so that you can play it and get your dog used to strange sounds. Your dog should get used to this and bon fire night wont be such a shock to her.

dogs will feed off your emotions if you make a fuss of her when the bangs go off she will be more afraid,when the bangs are going ignore her or carry on as usual ,turn the TV up a bit but show her there is nothing to be afraid of,my dog was the same but now i can take her out for a walk when the fireworks are on and she doesn't even notice.It works really.

Lemmysbabe is right, carry on as if nothing unusual is happening, if you make a fuss of her (and I used to do the same thing) it just makes her feel more insecure as she will think that you are worried as well, you are also conveying to her that it is OK to behave this way, IE.you are stroking her making a fuss of her and maybe saying something like 'good girl, there's a good girl' so thinks you are praising her for that kind of behaviour!
The ignoring thing does work, it's hard at first as you will feel like you are being cruel….you're not.

I can't remember what it is called but you can obtain from the vets something which is similar to a plug in air freshener. You have to plug it in about five days before 5th November but it worked a treat with both of my dogs – both of whom were in similar states to your dog.
