house training advice?

got my pup, a mini yorkshire terrier from a rescue centre a week ago,
hes exactly 8 weeks today

he sometimes uses his puppy pads and knows to go there when he needs a wee but sometimes he jsut goes anywhere

i know hes only young but the dogs my dads had in the past, usually really big dogs didnt take long to toilet train and hes getting really inpatient about him not being house trained yet

how long would expect it to take for him to learn?
iv heard small dogs take longer?

I got a Yorkiepoo in mid March and crate trained her to use the great outdoors as her toilet. I too was going to use pee pads but my vet. said to do the outside thing; and so I did. I kept daily records of what time of day she needed to go, and found that to be most useful.

It was a gradual process, and initially all I needed to see was progress, which I did. We went from messing in the crate the first day or two to being fully housebroken in less than two months. I am retired so I was able to dedicate ALOT of time with her.

Just remember that their organs are not developed as a small puppy and they need time to grow in order to "GO" on our schedule. My puppy stopped the middle of the night potty call at 5 1/2 months, as soon as I had her spayed.

They can usually hold it for one hour per month of age. That is to say that a 2 month old puppy can wait 2 hours, while one at 5 months can for 5 hours. This is of course an estimated time, and only a guideline.

Once you have successfully achieved this you will have a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.

Good luck, and ask your dad to please be patient, he knows you love your puppy and he loves you. I'll bet he will be.

My dog is a Shih Tzu crossed with Lassa Apso and she took a long time to house train but you should be able to house train him pretty fast if you keep on it and the dog just needs to know who the boss is (you) so just use a stern voice and make him smell it that way he will learn much faster and also make sure that he isnt able to smell where he last went because he will go there again!

Just make sure to scold your dog when he/she goes to the bathroom in the house, and make sure to reward her/him when they do something good!

I think the only reason small breeds take longer to house train is because they are treated less like dogs and more like babies!
It's still very early days for your puppy and there will be many more accidents to come, particularly during the night. He is just too young to be able to hold his bladder. I have a Bichon and they are supposed to be notoriously difficult to house train but I have never had a problem. I leave the back door open as much as possible so they have free run into the garden. They go out as soon as they wake up, straight after every nap, immediately after eating, last thing at night and approximately every 3-4 hours. I would still leave paper down and he will use that. Gradually move it closer towards the back door and then enventually eliminate the paper. You have to be patient. Getting angry with him won't teach him. Puppies are hard work but if you are consistent and firm now everything will fall into place. Good luck, I bet he's really cute

I have 3 Yorkies so I understand.
One of the reasons it is difficult to train a puppy is because The muscle that control elimination are not well developed until about 4 months old. So they can't control it yet.

What you can do is put them in the right place at the at the right time.
Allways when they wake up, eat, or start smelling the around and walking in circles, take them outside or put them on the wee wee pad. If you use a wee pad put them on it and sit next to it keeping them on it.
A puppy will pee about every 2 hrs. and poo right after eating. It gets easier but, in the beginning be on top of it because this in when habits are formed.

Good Luck
