Is there any way to tell the age of a dog (without paying a vet to tell me!)?
He's a yorkshire terrier who was rescued after being abandoned by his previous owner.
Generally a dog will have a complete set of adult teeth by the time it is 6 months old.
A young adult dog up to the age of about 2-3 years should have clean teeth with no signs of Tartar build up.
Dogs start to develop grey hair on the muzzle and chin at any age from about 6 years.
In all probability your vet would not be able to do more than give you a guesstimate in any case. Does it matter how old your new dog is? I always think that when you have taken on a rescue, he has a new life starting the day you collect him that's the day I say is their birthday.
Enjoy him however old he is!

try looking at the condition of the teeth. The worse the condition the older the dog tends to be

Yes i can help if you can send a pic of the dogs face and teath. Vets most of the time are off. I can give you a close geuss. Im really good at telling dogs ages.

Is it a puppy?? Is it a older dog?? If it's a puppy you can tell because certain teeth come in at certain times. Like for example the canine teeth usually come in around 6 months. If it's an adult you can tell by the amount of tartar on their teeth. But it's mostly guess work. Good Luck

Teeth are a good sign. Or you could cut it in half and count the rings. Or is that a tree?

if you can look at his back teeth,if they are worn he will be over 6. well done for giving him a home, i have a housefull.

Well, as some other people said, check his teeth. Is he active? if he is then it's probably a sign that he's younger, but some older dogs are active too.

teeth……look up pictures on the net….you'll never be completly right but youll have an idea

Looking at the teeth is usually a good indication of age but sadly because of the breed people tend to feed them tinned food or fresh meat (they get mothered like babies) So quite often the teeth are a lot worse than they would have been if the owner realised it's a dog & should be treated like one ie fed it dry food or given dry mixer. You could pop into you local animal shelter & they may help you but if you have only just got the dog & it was rescued I would recommend a general check over at the vets anyway.
