Nigerian pet scam
How it works: Scammers either run online classified ads or create breeder Web sites offering purebred puppies — typically English bulldogs or Yorkshire terriers — either free or at a discounted price.
The story can vary as to why the animal is free or discounted — the current owner is a missionary who needs to find the puppy a new home due to the terrible weather in its current location; the animal was rescued from a natural disaster and needs a good home, etc.
The scammer will then ask interested buyers to pay for the dog's shipment, down payment, inoculations and any number of other miscellaneous fees. The victims wire money for the dogs but generally only get excuses for the delay. Instead, they're repeatedly asked for more money to cover additional "fees" invented by the scammer.

Greedy scammers will concoct even more fees that the victim needs to pay after the dog has been supposedly shipped.
Unfortunately, once you wire the money, it's gone, says Preszler.

This is terrible. Those stupid scammers! I hope they don't actually abandon or torture the dogs or anything after they get the money…

Buying pets online, in general, is not a good idea. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are all scams but it's just not logical to buy something without seeing or inspecting it first.

Very sad. But people will always pull at heart strings to scam others. If people would use their common sense, instead of their hearts, they would see straight through most of these scams.

Basically, NEVER BUY A DOG YOU HAVEN'T SEEN. If it isn't a scam, it's an unethical breeder.
The solution is simple: only buy from responsible breeders, responsible rescues, and responsible shelters. Do some research – don't believe in "something for nothing."

HA, this is exactly like what I've run in to. And it does seem to be the bulldogs and yorkies. It's amazing that people would do this! I have had at least 15 people respond, who originally indicated they were in my state, saying they were out of the country, usually Africa or "Cameroon", and saying they were there for missonary work. They tend to push the religious stuff pretty hard core, I guess so they seem more trusting??? I had a couple too say there were taking care of some money or a company that was left to them by a dead relative and they had the dog with them but just can't keep it in the horrible weather conditions. I've started messing with them and saying that I'm reporting them to the site, which some I have, but also telling them to send me the dog first, then I'll pay. For some reason I'm not getting a response though when I say to send it first, hahaha. I also heard from one breeder (a legit breeder) that she does not ship because of some airline restrictions. Anyhow, watch out people! They are scamming, and some will even insist and push very hard, making all kinds of promises even when you've indicated you believe they are scams. But of course, they disappear, like I said, when I say send the dog first. Oh, and they also use generic pictures…I had two send me the exact same pics….what a coincidence. These people are pathetic!!! People, please don't have your pets shipped to you…I mean, wouldn't you want to see and interact with the pet first?

I know about the pet scams though it has never happened to me, buying pets online and paying for them is the worst you could evey do, me If someone is selling pets online, I want to see them, the parents, and there enviroment, to insure they have puppies and will be able to walk off with the pup as soon as i hand the cash, Really honestly I trust no online pet website that sells pets, to me its all a bunch of crap, I just read the news paper, becuase its local and the owners is local and i can go see the pups

I am so glad I read this today. I have been e-mailing back and forth with a man from Indiana who says he has a Capuchin Monkey for adoption. All he wants is the money for shipping. He asked for $223.00. I told him I didn't have that much at this time. He then asked me how much I could get. I told $100. He said ok and he would wait to hear from me for shipping. He asked for the nearest air port to me. I then e-mailed him back and asked him some questions about the monkey and how long shipping would take. His answer was that her name was Betchy and she liked to wear dresses. He said it would take 6 hours to ship and she would be delivered to my door. This seemed unreal to me, but wanting the little girl so bad I have kept hoping. I did intend to call the airport to find out about shipping, how long from there, how much and how it would be delivered to my house.
But after reading this I am sure this is a Scam. By reading his e-mails he sounds foreign, but says his name is , well I guess I shouldn't give his name, but it is definitely American. I think I will e-mail him today and let him know when I receive the baby I will wire the $100. and see what response I get.
I guess I've really known this must be a scam, but want it to be true so bad I just keep hoping. That is why I am so glad I read this today.

My husband responded to an ad of a Maltese dog for adoption. She was fr Ukraine or Russia (unsure) n said that she rescued this dog (with certification) fr abuse and wanted a good home for him. It was free but we had to send her $100 for the cargo charges fr her country. My husband said he wld pay for the shipping when her forwarding agent contacted him, at the same time picked the dog. She agreed. I said no one wld take the trouble to do that for nothing. True enough that was the last we heard from her.
Later we read an article on many ppl being cheated by these people claiming to sell their pedigree pets. The red flag was that rescued dog was a pedigree.
