im thinking about getting a dog i already have one breed on my mind an english setter i was at the adoption center today to meet one and i lover her her name is daisy shes 2 years old shes soo sweet and playfull she was rescued from someone that that kept her outside since she was a puppy i nall kinds of weather hot cold freezing etc….
i already have a setter ( an irish red setter) so i know thta thye needs LOTS Of exercise but its all worth it they are very similar to goldens and lab in personality but they can be stubborn
now back ot the terrier i want a "larger" terrier as for the temperament are they all " quick to bark, quick to chase, lively, bossy, feisty, scrappy, clever, independent, stubborn, persistent, impulsive, intense" thats the info i found on a web page about terriers
i did my reseach and i know that some of the larger terriers are :
-airedale terrier
kerry blue terrier
bedlington terrier
irish terrier
and soft coated wheaten terrier
now i
know that every dog is different
also what kind of terrier do you have ???
i know that most people keep smaller breed like the cairn terrier, parson or jack russell ,westie yorkshire terrier toy fox terier etc…
Well, I have Scottish Terriers, so that is my experience. My guy started to "mellow" out a little around age 8. He is 13 now. My rescue (who recently passed) was very laid back but had the feisty streak when she wanted to play. Our new little girl is younger and very active. She will bark at the TV, etc. So all my Scotties have demonstrated most of the characteristics of the terrier line. With Scotties there is a definite stubborn streak. They are also typically very aloof dogs.
The best thing to do is research what the breeds you are looking at were originally bred to do. What was the dog's job? For Scotties, they were bred to go to ground and rid the fields and stone walls in Scotland of vermin, including badgers. These dogs were bred to be very independent because they could not wait for a master to give a command when taking on a dangerous animal like a badger. I've found mine to be very clever and very fast learners, but there has to be something in it for them to provide motivation. I think one of the main characteristics in terriers is being feisty. I will say that Scotties are big dogs in small packages.

i have had Rat terrier, boston terrier Jack russell terrier and known yorkshire terriers they are all hyper love to play but awesome dogs very loyal and loving!! Great attitudes!!! Bigger terriers are kind of territorial Small ones like to bark and think they are ten foot tall.

I have an Airedale Terrier, the breed with the most energy in my mind. Everything you mentioned basically applies to her. Terriers in general are strong willed, which can make them difficult. My Airedale was practically hell with four legs for the first 3 years of her life, so if you are willing to put up with that, than go ahead. Most Terriers are not good dogs for first time dog owners, so it might not be a good idea. If i where you i would adopt an older dog (say 10 or 11) to gain experience, and knowledge, and after that get an Airedale. You can email me with any questions at airedaleairehead@yahoo.com

Airedales are so very hyper. My airedale Brutus has only one speed…FULL BLAST! He is also stubborn and only wants to do what is on his agenda for the day..which is chew, bite, and play! Do research on airedales before getting them and know ahead of time that they are going to require A LOT of attention.
