How do you train a Yorkshire Terrier to potty?
I have a 7 week old Yorkie. I want my puppy (Chloe) to go either outside or inside on pee pads. Can a Yorkshire Terrier learn to do both? And at what age is a good age to train my puppy and what age will she comprehend.
You could have a rottie or an alsation, ALL puppies will do the same - wee when they want to wee - they know no different! Please don't waste your money on ' training pads ' - biggest scam ever invented!!! Your puppy will take to some sheets of newspaper just as well as one of those things. She's still a very young baby so when she wakes up she'll want a wee almost immediately - as soon as she's awake and aware of where she is, pick her up and take her outside to your garden, if you haven't got a garden - put some newspaper on your kitchen floor ( never carpet ) and make her stay there until she's wee'd. As soon as she's finished, praise her like mad but don't shout or raise your voice - she'll get scared and think you're telling her off! Pick her up and give her a kiss and a cuddle, make a real fuss of her, give her a little treat and that way she'll realise that by weeing where you want her to really pleases you - she'll want to do it more and more! You have to be consistent, she won't learn it in a day or six, it takes time and patience. If you stick at it - so will she and in time you won't even have to get off the sofa to take her for a wee - she'll find the paper or scratch to go in the garden all by herself!

i picked up my dog at 4 months (yorkie) and it took us a while to train her on pads but taking her outside isnt a bad idea

well, my yorkie (bowie) has finally! learned how to do both! he normally pees outside and goes #2 on the potty pad because he doesnt like the feel of the grass on his butt. so you can train your dog however you want.
and p.s.,
its best to train them ASAP or else they'll never learn when they're older.
good luck!

When I first got my pup chinese crested/chuahua (now 6 mos. old) someone told me to take him outside to potty within 20 minutes after he wakes up. I started taking him outside to potty as soon as he woke up at 4 1/2 months old just after weining him (or getting him), and now its habit…when my pup wakes up, the first thing he does is go outside to potty. Yorkies are pretty smart (my sister has one)…you should be able to train her to do both. Start training as soon as you can, or right away. Good luck with Chloe!!
